My family and I had a blissful 8 days at this wonderful cottage. It is roomy and charming and has two big porches with great views of the sound. It is a quiet and laidback neighborhood, which is a bonus we appreciated. The beach is just across the road, and we were minutes from great restaurants, antiquing, and shops. We will definitely be back!
We rented this property for the weekend after having been there the previous year for a wedding picnic/celebration. We used it for the same type of thing - a family celebration of my daughter's high school graduation. It's a large property right across from the ocean. Five bedrooms made it perfect for extended family to stay for the weekend. The large front lawn made it perfect for lawn games. There's a big beautiful furnished porch - part of which is screened in - facing the ocean. It was the perfect spot for my sisters and I to sit and have our morning coffee and simply enjoy each other's company in the peaceful early morning hours. We have already started to talk about staying there again next year without the backdrop of a celebration - but more for a relaxing vacation. It was, in a word.....perfect!
We rented the big house for our son's graduation and had a terrific three-day stay! Christopher I. (writer of the next review below) is 100% correct--this is a rustic location that is ideal for a family weekend or week. During the day, my teenage kids sat on the porch, enjoyed the rocky view of Long Island Sound, and listened to the water foul. They sat and talked well after sunset and watched the stars, Falkner Island Lighthouse, and the unbelievable rise of a full moon. They also enjoyed running on the winding roads going west along the shoreline. My mother-in-law really enjoyed exploring Guilford, a historic and charming community just a couple of miles away. Had it not been for the graduation, we would have spent every minute right there at the Big House!
The house is full of character and well appointed with all the basic amenities your group might need for a stay at the beach. We put together puzzles at night, lounged on the amazing front porch, stretched in the sun on the screened-in side porch, played lawn games, and drifted to and from the private beach.
We were a large group but the many bedrooms allowed us privacy and we did not feel packed in tightly. We'd love to come again if we find ourselves in cute little Guilford, CT!
This is a lovely, relaxing, rustic cottage in a quiet seaside community. If you're looking for luxury or action, go elsewhere, but if you're looking for long, slow afternoons of reading, swimming or simply sitting on the front porch - it's hard to beat this spot.
The house is large and homey. It's old and a bit quirky in its layout, but it's well-provisioned. The beds are comfortable and there's plenty of fans for the warmish nights. We particularly liked the many options for eating and gathering - front porch, screened in side porch, large dining area, picnic table in back. Our only struggle (a tiny one) was that there's only one shower. If we'd had more bath takers, it would have been less an issue.
In short, we'd return in a heartbeat.
The Big house was the ideal location for my mother, sister and I to enjoy strolls on the beach or just relax on one of the two porches to enjoy a good book or take in the beautiful view of Long Island Sound.
We hosted a family gathering and everyone from children to young adults to great grandparents enjoyed their visit.
The cottage has large common areas that accommodate small intimate gatherings. The bedrooms roomy and comfortably sleep ten people.
Although the cottage is in a private secluded area, it is also close to quaint shops or major retail stores. There are also many great eating establishments nearby.
There is a small private beach to lie in the sun or take a refreshing swim. Several family members also brought fishing poles to cast a line off the stone pier.
The community was very welcoming and friendly. We were invited to a neighborhood cookout on the first day of our visit. As we walked through town, we were often greeted with a hello and a smile.
I would recommend the Big House because of its charm, the location is incredible and amenities are outstanding. If it had not been for the fact that there was another family arriving on Saturday, we would have extended our stay an additional week.
I would like to thank Joe for making the Big House a pleasurable retreat.
