River cottage is the perfect base from which to explore the little Breton town of Josselin and surrounding area. Comfortable and well equipped, the riverside location means it is cool on hot days, and there are relaxing walks along the towpath in either direction. We would happily recommend River Cottage to anyone looking for a relaxed holiday in a peaceful setting.
As this is our 4th visit to River Cottage and our 4th review, I find it difficult to add anything new as everything I have commented on in previous reviews is just as valid today.
So instead I will try to describe the magic of the cottage and why we fell in love with it.
It is an upside down cottage, the kitchen and living area are on the top floor. From the kitchen window all you can see is the river, trees and greenery and from the living area the Josselin Chateau over roof tops. It is magical in the evening to watch the sunset over the castle from the comfort of your armchair.
The bedroom and bathroom are on the first floor and again the view from the window over the river, garden and towpath is wonderful..
The lobby on the ground floor house the garden furniture, BBQ accessories, washing machine etc.
And there is the garden . . . .so colourful, so beautiful and completely private. We feed the birds in the garden, the ducks and fish in the river. You have a feeling of being part of nature even inside the cottage with the fantastic views.
There is the peace and tranquillity of a rural retreat but the nearest boulangerie and restaurant are only 2 minutes walk away and the centre of Josselin 5 minutes away.
The cottage is lovely and very nicely furnished. The stairs are quite steep, and many of them, but you soon get used to them. Little things like English TV and free wi-fi are a nice touch, It is in a very nice setting and very peaceful, even though many walkers and cyclists pass by.There are fantastic views of the chateau, positioned as it is right next to the Nantes-Brest canal and the centre of Josselin is only a few minutes walk away. We had been to Josselin a few times previously and it was really nice to spend the two weeks there. It is a lovely town and very vibrant at the weekend, especially on market day. There are lots of good places to eat and quite reasonably priced too.The lady at La Sarrazine was very welcoming, we went there several times. Josselin is also conveniently located for visits to many of Morbihan's other attractions, whether it be lovely beaches, country walks or some shopping in Vannes, another very picturesque town.
The weather was very kind to us, warm and sunny the first week (25+ degrees on most days) and only marginally cooler the second week. If you want to spend some quality time 'chilling out', then this is a great place to do it.
This is our third visit to River Cottage and definitively not the last one , I hope !
We fell in love with the cottage on day one and it is such a pleasure to return, although we missed last year due to ill health.
There is not much I can add to our previous reviews , the standard is still 5 star + : beautifully furnished and decorated, immaculately clean, excellent quality furniture and fittings.
The large sunny garden is wonderful , very private and secluded with 3 separate areas : paved patio area, gravel barbecue area and car parking area. You are surrounded with flowers and greenery.
It was chilly at night at the beginning of our stay and we most welcomed the heating in the cottage , it is very efficient , we had the place all cosy in 10 minutes making the cottage ideal for a winter let.
Our favourite creperie La Sarrazine is still at the end of the road, 2 minutes walk away, and still as good as ever.
There is a slight change to the supermarkets , Carrefour is now a LECLERC and SuperU has moved to the other side of the motorway and is now a huge hypermarket.
Many thanks to Sue and David for again a wonderful holiday.
We had the pleasure of staying at River Cottage for a week in October, 2011. The cottage is located in a very peaceful position overlooking the Brest-Nantes Canal in Josselin, a beautiful village in Brittany. Josselin is small enough to get around easily on foot but large enough to provide all the amenities needed. The market on Saturday morning is particularly good and local produce and goods are available in abundance.
We chose to use public transport during our trip which proved convenient, cheap and very efficient and meant we were able to spend much of our time just strolling along the canal, exploring the village and eating at the local restaurants.
Josselin is easily accessed by bus from Rennes. The bus departs from Gare Routiere which is located just outside the train station. Take the bus line 35, Rennes – Pontivy, and the trip takes just under 90 minutes. There are a number of buses each way per day and some are timed to coincide with the TGV to and from Paris Montpanasse. The fare iat the time of writing was 13 Euros per person, one way and tickets are available from the driver. The bus stops in Josselin at Place du 18 Juin 1940, near the top of the village and an easy 10 minutes walk to River Cottage.
We think River Cottage represents extremely good value for money. It is beautifully presented, very comfortable and comes with everything you could possibly need for a very relaxing holiday. We look forward to returning one day.
This is our second visit to River Cottage. We stayed in June 2010 and again July 2011.
The cottage is as beautiful as previous and has spoiled us for future rentals. There are plenty of beautiful, clean, nicely decorated rentals in France but what put River Cottage well above the other are :
THE VIEW : looking out to the river ,wonderful.
THE GARDEN : what a garden, so private and beautiful with patio area, BBQ and parking.
THE LOCATION : right onto the canal Nantes-Brest path and 5 minutes walk from Josselin, 1 minute walk from la Sarrazine creperie (highly recommended) and all restaurants, boulangerie etc within walking distance plus 2 supermarche: Carrefour and SuperU on the north side of Josselin 5 minutes by car.
THE COTTAGE : spotlessly clean, beautifully finished and decorated with quality furniture and fittings, so comfortable.
THE PARKING : private parking in the garden.
THE SIZE : small enough to be cute and big enough to be comfy.
THE OUTLOOK : so peaceful and calm in beautiful countryside surroundings but minutes away from bustling historical Josselin
It is wonderful at the end of the afternoon to park the car away for the night ,enjoy a glass of wine on the sunny patio and walk to your favourite restaurant.
As a previous review has mentioned ,the stairs are a bit daunting but they are extremely well lit and you do get use to them.
Sue has now provided a picnic basket to carry all things required for meals and drinks on the patio.
The only problem that I can see, is with all these wonderful reviews, the cottage might well be fully booked when we want to go ! !
