Away from the crowds in the best possible way

We rented Joe's place for a brief getaway with our kids during spring break. The house is located in a private community, a 5-minute walk to the beach down a lovely path. We loved that it is away from the more crowded Capitola and had the clean and expansive beach to ourselves! You have to drive a little further to grocery stores, etc. so we shopped on our way down. It is spacious and comfortable with everything you need for a home away from home. Lovely view from the deck. The key code didn't work upon arrival and Joe was a responsive host to help us get in. My only two minor suggestions are to add shampoo to the shower and tighten up the outlets so you can more easily charge your phone, etc. I know the beach is for unplugging ... but teenagers don't quite get that. :) We went home with wonderful memories of Sand Dollar beach.

Great location!

The home was a short walk from the beach. There were steps, which were not a problem for our family. We were within a short drive to Santa Cruz, Monterey and Carmel. We visited all three as well as some nearby parks.

The beds were comfortable and the unit was clean. Will mention that we visited in March and day time highs were in the 60s. The lower level was chilly. This might be a plus in warmer weather. One child slept on the couch upstairs where it was warmer and it worked out. Overall, this was a comfortable and affordable home. We would consider staying here in the future..

Storms, no power

We reserved this house for our 30th anniversary, to share with our adult children, my mother and our 2 grandbabies. It was almost a 4 hour drive for us and an 8 hour drive for our son and daughter in law. My sister and her family booked a hotel, but planned to join us for all meals as this was where we planned to spend most of our time....together. Though this home was true to it's reviews as it was stocked with pretty much all you need, minus food...one thing it severely lacked in was any type of items that are needed for potential power outages...except a lot of matches. In the days prior to arriving, we were evacuated from our home in Oroville due to potential flooding from our dam and were barely allowed home the day before we left for Santa Cruz. Unfortunately, we felt as if the storms followed us, as we ended up with a stormy couple of days of which we lost power in the rental. This was not just no power for a few hours....we had no power from 6:50 a.m. Friday morning, until around 7:00 p.m. Saturday. Yes, pretty much 2 full days without power. This meant our cell phones could not be charged, we had no land line in the house that worked, no cooking, no lights. Unfortunately, though this house was fully stocked, the one thing that would have been nice, was some type of emergency lighting. We did contact the owner whom referred us to local stores and restaurants. This would have been fine, had we planned to eat out for every meal, but we are ones that like to stay in and cook together, enjoying the peacefulness of our vacation rental versus eating out. Not to mention, with the amount of people we had, we spent well over $500 on just a few meals out. And thank goodness we had our ice chests, as we would have lost most of the food we brought. We had to go to the store a few miles away to purchase flashlights and candles as there was nothing in the house. Trees were down, roads closed..winds were bad...and flooding. Most have asked did we get a partial refund....no we did not, nor was anything really offered. I know you can't really plan for something like this, but it did make for a very stressful couple of days, versus the nice family time we had planned for. Not to mention, our son drove all that way, for us to be without power for all but the last day he was able to stay. The house is fabulous other than it really needs to have some type of help for those potential power outages since you really never know.

Great location and very comfortable house.

We were looking for a central location for a family Christmas celebration. Joe's house served our needs with ample space and seating. Joe worked with us on an early check-in to get a head start on food preparation. It is a great location with a paved stairs/path to the beach. The house is loaded with amenities like towels, linen, appliances and pots and pans. Everything functioned to our expectations and everyone had a great time. A few gift packages didn't arrive prior to our departure, so Joe worked with us to retrieve all packages. I would like to thank Joe for his hospitality and would definitely recommend his house if you're looking for a great beach experience.

Spacious, comfortable property walking distance to the beach.

Spacious home near the beach was perfect for my sisters and I taking our mom for a getaway weekend for her 92nd birthday. It's a very comfortable 2 story home with plenty of parking for the three vehicles we had since I brought Mom and my 2 sisters met us there - two car driveway and street parking is available. Joe responded to questions quickly and there was good information in the listing with HomeAway. I really would not recommend this particular house to someone taking the average 92-year-old parent with them as you really have to walk between upstairs and downstairs frequently because the kitchen and main living area is upstairs and the walk to the beach is on quite an incline and has more stairs. But our mom is very healthy and ambulatory for her age so just watching her carefully and "spotting" her in these areas worked well. It's a very spacious home for a family desiring comfortable accommodations in a house near the beach and I would highly recommend it. We took Mom to birthday dinner one night at Bittersweet Bistro and thoroughly enjoyed it and would recommend. We had a fun weekend celebrating Mom and she enjoyed it immensely.
