Excellent family holiday.
Everything you could wish for included in this secluded home. Twenty minute drive to downtown Hilo with waterfalls and beautiful Botanic Gardens nearby.
Amazing property and grounds
First of all I want to start by giving a big mahola to Marcy, Robert and Jack. Jack is the best property manager we ever met. I mentioned we’ll miss some of the game because of the flight and he said no worries he’ll record it and it’ll be waiting for us.When we met Jack he took the time to explained everything about the property and the surrounding areas when he was done we felt like locals .We did the Hawaiian cruise the first week, but we should have skipped that and spent both weeks here. The property is phenomenal and embodies what the Hawaiian experience should be without the commercialism. The temperature averaged 80-85 but the house was always cool and we only used the fans once. The pictures did not do the house justice every room has a beautiful view.Everyone we met made us feel like family. This was the best vacation we ever had and will definitely go back.

Very lovely home with beautiful views in the perfect location
This was the perfect place for our extended family to stay for our dream vacation in Hawaii, and we thoroughly enjoyed it. It’s a very beautiful home, well-maintained, on a large, open, gorgeous piece of property. The kids had a ball swimming in the natural pool at the waterfall on the property. The two sets of grandparents were happy to sit on the lanai enjoying the breezes and looking at the beautiful ocean views. All of us enjoyed the hot tub. We felt so at home there, we were wishing we could live there, and we really felt sad when it was time to leave (our youngest even cried as we were driving away). Truly a rare and precious gem.
The volcano was actively erupting during our stay, and we got to see it flowing into the ocean from a tourist boat – unearthly. But the noxious volcanic fumes were heavy on parts of the island, and that restricted our activities somewhat. At Kapehu the air was heavenly, though, because the breezes always blow in from the north and east, while the volcano is to the south, so the fumes get sent farther away. So we mostly stuck to activities on the northeast part of the island near Kapehu, where the air was good: the amazing botanical gardens, the magnificent waterfalls, some black sand beaches, a zip line, the charming and quaint little towns of Honomu, Laupahoehoe, Honokaa, and Havi. We heard that the eruption stopped right after we got back home. So we’ll have to return to the Big Island and see the rest of it. And we’ll stay at Kapehu again for sure.
The owner was quick to respond to all our questions and had some good advice about sights to see. The caretaker, Jack, is an all-around great guy.
Funny, on our return flight home we met some Canadians who were also returning from a trip to Hawaii. They had purchased a package deal that included flights and hotel, and as we shared our stories we felt sorry for them – why would anyone ever stay in a hotel when it’s possible to rent a beautiful private home in a quiet natural setting?! And they were envious when we told them about the place we stayed at, and how inexpensive it was.
Can’t recommend this place highly enough!
All we can say is "Oh, wow!"
Saying "what a beautiful place!" isn't adequate. Gorgeous home! We had a fabulous time. Took full advantage of the hot tub, swam in the natural pool beneath the waterfall, gazed at the amazing starry sky. Got to fly over the eruption in a helicopter -- awesome! The nearby botanical garden is other-worldly in its beauty. Only problem was our trip was way too short. We'll be back!
Impeccably maintained home on large property near main big island attractions.
We really enjoyed Kapehu Retreat. What a roomy, lovely home in an exquisite setting! Jack was very welcoming and helpful (came right away to repair leaky washer hose)...owner is lucky to have him to keep an eye on things. Kitchen was very well outfitted, and everything about the house was top shelf. Extraordinary setting.
Volcano park was closed, but we toured by helicopter (even saw lava fissure from distance). Visited observatories at Mauna Kea, Waipio Valley, Mauna Kea resort, Merriman’s and beautiful botanical gardens. This place was a great location for hitting it all!
Hawaii Volcanoes National Park, é claro, é um must-see.
