La Floresta is a truly beautiful and magical place

  • 5 de 5

We absolutely loved our stay at La Floresta. We stayed for 4 weeks in the spacious 2 bedroom house set amid a forest of trees and flowering plants opening on its own private ocean view. The house has a fully equipped large kitchen with gas stove, large oven, blender, everything we could want as two people who like to cook. There is also an outdoor cooking area with a beautifully crafted cooking grate that swings over the open cooking fire. We frequently cooked chicken and fresh fish from a local fisherman who lived just up the road from us. One of our favorite features of the house was the large covered but open on three sides area that formed an open living area facing the ocean and forested garden area. It was beautifully furnished with a large, hand crafted dining table and chairs, sumptuous day bed, hammocks of course, and even a rocking chair! When we were anywhere on the La Floresta property we felt like we were all alone together in an exotic paradise but, in fact, we could easily step out the property gate and walk to the nearby lovely village of Cabuya for groceries or to eat at one of the excellent family owned restaurants. Claudia, the owner and manager of the property, is a very fine artist and a lovely and gracious person to get to know. Claudia has her house and studio on the property but the estate is so large and fully landscaped that we really never knew if she was home or not unless we walked the path to her house and knocked on her door. We enjoyed our stay there so much that we tried to book the house with Claudia for our next visit to the area later in the year but, of course, she was already booked! Anyone who has the privilege to stay in this wonderful place is lucky indeed!

Beautiful, private spot with ocean breezes.

  • 5 de 5

This January/February marked our third stay at La Floresta and our 4th visit to Cabuya. I have mixed feelings about writing this review because I like to think that La Floresta is my own secret getaway and am hesitant to share it with anyone else but, Claudia asked me to do it and so only as a favor to our host.

Of all of the many beaches we have visited in Costa Rica, this place is the best. The beach itself is not the prettiest since at low tide there is a lot of exposed volcanic rock. But that is just fine with us since that is the time many different shore birds choose to search for minnows and crabs. High tide offers the time to swim. What borders the beach, however, is quite beautiful and there are rarely any other people in site. La Floresta offers almost constant cooling breezes during the day and lots of shade to avoid the hot daytime sun. In the afternoon, we often sit on the chairs overlooking the Pacific watching the pelicans dive and drinking cold Costa Rican beer. At low tide I usually hike out to the cemetery island where I fly cast off of the rocks or wade into the cove. No time is ever the same, with sitings of large sea turtles, schools of fish and beautifully colored sting rays.

The house is simple yet elegant. We spend most of our time on the open but, covered living room patio. The outdoor shower is a plus. The area is nicely landscaped with native plants and trees that offer shade and privacy. Claudia lives next door but her place is hidden from La Floresta. Claudia is , however, almost always around and ready to help out if needed.

The village of Cabuya is not a tourist town. If you want that you should stay in Mal Pais or Santa Teresa where you will get your fill. Cabuya is where you get to meet Ticos and practice your Spanish. There are at least 2 great restaurants, Marvin's and El Coyote, and a couple a couple of other good ones, all within easy walking distance of La Floresta. There is a bakery and there are 2 small supermarkets. You can buy fresh and smoked fish from local folks.

In addition to the ocean, there is a small river within easy walking distance that offers waterfalls, pools of clear, cool water and great birding. For those who enjoy wildlife Cabuya offers significant biodiversity.

In summary, we continue to return to La Floresta because it is a unique place like nothing else we have found in Costa Rica.

I enjoyed my stay at La Floresta and can't wait to return for my next visit. I was there during the second week of October. Everything about my stay was what I had hoped for as a getaway in the tropics. The property is lovely, tucked within the trees with immediate access to the beach, sun and ocean. I enjoyed long walks, great food, good company and relaxing as one would expect to do in a tropical paradise. Also worth mentioning is the cemetario on the island across from Claudia's property which is steeped with local history. Definitely worth checking out when the tide is low :) Claudia was a lovely host and I am so appreciative that she was there to help make my stay enjoyable and care free. She was always available if I had questions about traveling the roads locally and around the country, always with the best recommendations whether it be to drive, fly or take a bicycle :) - This was especially helpful since I don't have a strong command of the Spanish language and getting around isn't as straight forward as you might think. From the time of booking my stay at La Floresta, up to my arrival in Cabuya, Claudia was the most accommodating and gracious hostess and she offers a truly wonderful location on the beach in Cabuya, Costa Rica.

Viva la Floresta

  • 5 de 5

Our family of 4 (our daughters were 5 and 2) stayed in La Floresta for the entire month of February 2013. This was the last chapter of our 3-month adventure in Costa Rica. We will forever keep very fond memories of this place. We simply felt so good.

The house is set in a very lush garden, full of beautiful trees and funny animals. The trees shelter the house from the sun, and there is always a gentle breeze blowing through the branches, which make the patio a very cosy place to be at any time of the day, even when it is blazing hot. Iguanas, monkeys and birds are the stars around here, and we spent much time observing them and enjoying their company.

But what really makes La Floresta a unique place is the immediate access to the beach. Just walk through the garden for one minute, pass under the palm trees ceiling, and you find yourself facing the ocean and Cabuya island. And best of all, you are all alone and at high tide, you can swim without danger as there are no waves nor riptides, which are rare privileges in this region of Costa Rica.

We spent hours on the beach and in the water. We actually started the day by waking up very early to contemplate the sun rise over the sea. Then we would come back a after breakfast with our 2 daughters to enjoy the beach while it was not too hot. During the day, we did many excursions in the vicinity of Cabuya: we explored Cabo Blanco park, enjoyed the funny Montezuma scene, the amazing scenery and waves at Playa Santa Teresa... We had no car but we had time, therefore we were happy to manage with local buses and sometimes taxis. In the evening, we celebrated by grilling over the open fire in the garden delicious fresh fish that we bought directly from the Cabuya fishermen.

Eventually, we got to know our host Claudia, who lives in the neighbouring house. We got along very well and had lots of fun and inspiring conversations with her. Our girls loved her even though they did not share a common language. We shared unforgettable moments, and we truly hope we will be back one day, this time in the wet season to see the river flow in the middle of the garden!

So if you are looking for a friendly paradise, off the beaten track and away from the crowds, we warmly recommend you La Floresta.

Magical Costa Rican Garden,Beach House

  • 5 de 5

I stayed in this house for about 3 months with my boyfriend and his uncle. My time here has been such a wonderful experience and something I will never forget. I would come stay here every time! You have such easy access to the ocean for a swim, for snorkeling, kayaks you can use at the property, Cabo Blanco National Park, really tasty places to eat, a crystal clear river that leads to waterfalls, and Montezuma is only 4 km away. Our favorite place to eat was the Panaderia where nearly everything on the menu is fabulous. Everyday with our dog (yes we brought our hound dog) in the mornings if the tide was low we would walk to the river along the beach. The scenery on the walk is breathtaking there are no buildings, nothing un natural to obstruct the incredible views, and all you hear is the sound of the waves, when you arrive to the river it is perfectly clear and cool, flowing out to the ocean. If that doesnt start your day out perfectly than nothing will! Also we loved just sitting on the spacious patio, eating, drinking a fruit batida and playing chess where amongst the palm trees we could clearly see the sky blue ocean. Another thing we did on a regular basis was, at low tide, we would walk out to the cemetery island and fish off the rocks, catch nice snappers, and cook them over the fire grill outside. This place is perfect for nature lovers, and people who love peace and quiet on their vacation! Just to hear the sounds of birds, monkeys, and the crashing waves is nothing short of meditative. The house is very comfortable, there is no need for air conditioning, we were not hot one night of our stay! always a nice ocean breeze and being under the shade there really is never a heat problem. The patio is the chillest spot, but inside the kitchen is nice to cook in and has everything you need. We cooked at home most of the time! Plus if you need to know anything about Costa Rica at all, the woman next door who rents the house (Claudia) has all the local knowledge you will need to make your stay in Costa Rica so amazing. She was a big reason why we loved it here so much. A free, artistic spirit and very hospitable. Don{t hesitate, this is where you want to stay to get the real costa rican experience. This place is a gem! Time flys here because your really are having so much fun.

Ten Days in Paradise

  • 5 de 5

We stayed here for 10 nights, 17/5/12 thru 26/5/12 and loved it. The location is great. The beach borders the property and there are several restaurants in walking distance. Everything we had at the bakery was delicious. The pizza at Cafe Coyote is really good and the soda across the road from Super Davids, (I can't remember the name), is very good as well (try the quesadillas). At low tide you can walk to Isla Cabuya, and if you walk to the left on the beach, you come to a beautiful river. Montezuma is a long walk, a $10.00 cab ride, or you can ride the bus. There is an organic market on Saturday, some good restaurants and lots of people watching there. If you don't want to go out to eat, the kitchen has everything you need to cook whatever you want, and having a washing machine is a huge plus! Claudia is a fantastic host. Since she's lived in the area for years, she can answer any question you have, and if she doesn't have the answer, she'll find it. The house is clean and comfortable. The outside living room was our favorite hang out place. Even though both bedrooms have fans, there's usually a breeze coming from the ocean. There are chairs right at the beach and watching the tide come in each afternoon is one of the most relaxing things ever. We had ripe mangos and avocados in the yard, which we loved. The pictures of the house are very accurate, but what they don't show are how beautiful the surroundings are. The shelling is great, and I saw what was probably the most beautiful sunset I've ever seen while watching the tide come in one afternoon. I would recommend this place to anyone who wants to experience the real Costa Rica and not some sterile, all-inclusive, compound. I can't wait to go back but the next time I'll stay longer. Absolutely loved it!
