This happened to us the year before, that summer quickly began to draw to an end, and we hadn’t had our much needed yearly taste of the sea. Because it was already October, we chased the sun East, and flew to one of the Greek islands. There, I was amazed by the purity of the water, and didn’t imagine one could find anything as wonderful anywhere else in Europe. This year we had reason to be in the Milan area for a few days, at the end of September, and it was clear that the only sea we’d see would have to be somewhere in the north of Italy. The water at the tiny, wonderfully secluded rocky beach just before the French border, which the owner's handbook to the house directed us to, was no less perfect than the Greek sea, and I was astonished. Twenty minutes away from this treasure of a little spot, you find yourself in the thick forested mountains where Italy and France meet. The sea feels like it is hours away. The noise of civilisation seems years away. It all feels quite adventurous, and quite timeless. The little hamlet of Fanghetto sits precariously on the side of one of these mountains, an incredible view from the small winding road, which you so want to enjoy, but it is impossible to, whilst driving among the motorcyclists heading into France.
The house is absolutely delightful. It was restored with a care that is completely palpable. Everything so comfortable, the light so beautiful, and yet it feels completely authentic.
Had it not been for our strong desire to swim in the sea, we would have happily never moved from the house, like hermits. We did this for one of the days, a rainy one, and cooked some perfect meals and didn’t miss a thing. The place was a perfect hideout in bad weather, and on clear evenings the terrace was a ledge overlooking the world.
The landscape and civilisation seems to change dramatically within small distances in this area. We drove the mountain road into France for breakfast one day, and the town we stopped in seemed from a completely different time to Fanghetto, which itself feels like another world from Ventimiglia. At a time of year when we thought any possibility for a little holiday was probably lost, our time in Fanghetto was absolutely perfect, and quite unforgettable. We hope to return soon.
The villa in Fanghetto was spectacular - just as the pictures show it. Beautiful views, well stocked kitchen, clean and very comfortable. The veranda is where you must spend your mornings and evenings - dining, stargazing, napping. The hike down to the river for a cool swim is a must. We were surprised by a herd of wild boar - with little babies! Olive and fig trees abound! we picked enough figs each day to enjoy with our meals. Kim was so helpful and met our every need. She even found a guitar for us to borrow as a special request - made our evenings on the veranda so special under the stars. Thanks, Kim!!
Sehr empfehlenswert!
We had a great week in Richard's elegant house, which truly was a home to us thanks to its location, the views, the nice interior and the hospitality and service of the owner and his aid. It was easy to cook, sleep, rest, read and enjoy in this elegant house. Our children (18 and 16) met other children and went swimming in the little river, while we went to medieval villages in the valleys nearby or just went reading at another spot in the cool river. There is a surprisingly well-equiped shop at the entrance of Fanghetto, which we can also recommend. We had a fantastic stay!
We celebrated our 25th anniversary by spending 8 wonderful days at this beautiful home on a small mountain in Italy. It felt like we took a step backward in time as we moved into this old stone home. The home was very comfortable, had a nice kitchen where we cooked all our dinners and a great terrace with a view of the mountains, river and sunset, perfect for happy hours with Italian wine.
The location was great giving us easy access to several different French and Italian mountain top cities. Every day we planned a trip to one or the other for lunch seeing the natural sites along the way or visiting other cities on the way to our luncheon site. Some of the cities we visited were Sospel, Menton, Beaulieu-Sur-Mer and Saorge in France and Ventimiglia, Dolceacqua, Isolabona and Apricale in Italy. We also visited Nice, Ez and La Turbie. Our favorite lunch restaurant was Ristorante Apricale da Delio.
We didn’t have time to get in the picturesque walk from the house to Airole, but we will do this next time.
A day at Hanbury Gardens is very much worth the drive to the coast and was our favorite day trip. It is a beautiful garden with a great variety of plants, fountains and vistas of the sea.
And we very much appreciate the fact that the home was stocked with books and maps on the area as well as Richard’s personal recommendations for places to go and things to do. These were most helpful.
Finally, being so close to the Nice Airport (direct flights from NYC) where the rental cars were very reasonable, made the entire trip easy to plan.
We can hardly wait to return to this home and visit new cities in the area.
My wife and I spent the final week of our honeymoon in Fanghetto. It was October, cool and quiet. The village was completely empty except for a handful, about five, local residents, which made the setting perfect for us. The home Richard has built is beautiful. The view overlooks the Roya river, and distant, mountain perched villages. Marisa's, a small convenience store located at the turn-off to the village, makes fantastic espresso based drinks. Menton, Ventimiglia and Breil are close, and have great restaurants/markets. Regarding day trips, everything, spanning from Provence through Imperia/Liguria is accessible. As Richard recommends in his guide to the region, making day trips and returning to either local meals in Airole or homemade is the best way to maximize the experience. The trattoria in Fanghetto was getting fixed up during our stay, so we missed out on that, but I spoke with the owner and it seems like that is a very nice experience as well. Anyhow, Fanghetto is a great experience. Richard's home is a perfect setting to relax and enjoy a peaceful vacation and a beautiful region.
