To freely move around the best is to get a 24 hour travel card. This is not a one day travel card, i.e., if you buy it at say at 20:00 it will be valid until 19:59 of the day after. It costs €6.40 + €0,50 for the rechargeable card itself. It is valid on metro, buses, trams (including the famous 28 tram), the lifts (Glória, Bica, Santa Justa, etc). It’s money well spent if your day involves taking public transports a few times. If you buy individual tickets from the various lifts’ drivers these will be more expensive but if you plan to ride them (up and down) all in one day, the 24 hour ticket is the right choice.
These tickets can be bought at the metro station.
