The apartment is high-spec and the owners have thoughtfully provided everything that one would need on holiday including umbrellas, a varied selection of books and even jigsaws for those so inclined. The apartment is well located within the tourist zone, with supermarket across the road (as well as a health food shop providing tofu for vegetarian visitors) and selection of bars, restaurants around the corner. Of course, these are not 'locals' but the bus-stop is literally just outside and a 10-min bus hop can bring a more madeiran flavour closer: for something more authentic look out for the small-scale 5/6 table cafe cum bars in the back streets where a small beer is accompanied by a plate of garlicy broad beans (or similar). The local lager 'Corral' must be one of the best lagers going and is much preferred to the house wine, which is poor quality. The local spirits, however, are in a league of their own with tropical fruit and nut flavours. The English church holds occasional concerts - the mandolin orchestra was very good, and the national theatre has an operatic programme. The maderia wine tour in the main street by the tourist information is highly informative, or at least I think it was but the detail got lost in the tastings that followed. Also recommended is the cable car and wicket basket descent from the moutain top in Monte. Driving is fine and not as difficult as some of the guide books suggest although the streets are narrow and the going is slow with the hills and bends. As the island is fairly compact a car is not really necessary for a long period and can be a hindrance to walkers as the most appealing walks are largely linear. The owner is extremely helpful and the administrative aspects are dealt with very efficiently and in good time. While not necessarily an 'authentic' experience, all in all the apartment is perfectly situated for location and comfort.
This was a home from home! This apartment totally lived up to our expectations. It was excellently situated for nearby peace & tranquility through high quality coastal pathway walks! ( Recommend The Magic Tearoom) yet, within a minute's walk is a high quality shopping mall with supermarket and several excellent reastaurant said! Our favourite was O' Classico!
The apartment has comfortable bed, immaculately clean, & tastefully furnished. There are plenty books, cd,s & dvd's if by any chance there is a wet day.
We cannot recommend highly enough.
It was lovely to be welcomed by the owner Marie!
We spent a wonderful time in this perfect equipped, well located very nice and clean apartment. Never before we met such lovely mindful hosts.
If we should stay once more in Madeira we will choose nothing else :-)
We were greeted by RoseMarie who explained everything we needed to know and made us feel very welcome.
The apartment is very comfortable and has everything required for a trouble- free holiday. Location is ideal with an excellent shopping centre including supermarket just across the road and the bus to Funcal only five minutes away. Local restaurants are also within walking distance and an early morning stroll along the promenade is great for building up he appetite.
The island is fantastic! This was our first visit and Manuel, the friendly taxi driver who collected us from the airport took us on a couple of great tours to the Nun's valley and around the east of the island. Well worth it.
The toboggan drive form Monte is also a must!
Thank you RoseMarie.
We had a lovely 2 week stay at Roda Mar; our second holiday at this spacious, bright, clean and well equipped apartment. The location of the apartment makes it a great base for exploring Madeira. Buses to Funchal are frequent and taxis are always available outside the building. We enjoyed walking to Funchal, exploring the back streets, strolling along the sea front and finishing with a cold drink at the Barreirinhar Bar Cafe overlooking the sea in the historic Old Town. There is also an enjoyable walk from the apartment heading west along the promenade to Camara de Lobos.
When in Madeira, Levada walks are a must .
The owner, Rose Marie was very helpful and kept us informed of upcoming events in Funchal. She was there to meet us on our arrival with a much appreciated welcome pack, telephoned during our stay to check if everything was OK and came to say goodbye at the end of our stay. She was even kind enough to give my husband a card and chocolates on his birthday; a nice personal touch.
We look forward to returning to Madeira in the near future and staying once again at this lovely apartment.
Having visited Madeira several times now, staying in both hotels and self-catering apartments, the Roda Mar is the best accommodation I have stayed in. It was extremely comfortable, offering every facility, and in a delightful location with a sea view. Excellent hospitality offered by the owners, who were on hand to greet me on arrival and provided a lovely "welcome pack" of bread, pastries, butter, milk, eggs, etc. Across the road from the apartment was a shopping mall, including a large supermarket, and various cafes and restaurants. The apartment is conveniently situated just a few yards from a bus stop, as well as a taxi rank. Buses into the lovely town of Funchal were frequent, taking only 15 minutes to the centre, where there are a vast array of restaurants, shops and leisure amenities to enjoy. Highly recommended.
