I arrived at La Casa Bonita May, 2014 and stayed until October, 2015. It was the perfect place for me and my two dogs while my own house was being constructed nearby.
As the owner has shown in the pictures, and previous tenants reported, the furnishings are minimal. While this may be an issue for some guests, it was optimal for me as I had loads of room to store items that I purchased for my new home. The front entry was also ideal to store my small trailer and bring my vehicle in off the street; out of the rain and sun.
The house has two bedrooms that share a large bathroom. There is also a half bath in the garden near the pool with an outdoor shower. The front bedroom is equipped with AC which my guests used occasionally. The garden bedroom has a fan and three doors with plenty of air flow.
The kitchen is separated from the house with large glass doors to the patio. I provided my own kitchen supplies, linens and towels because I brought them with me. The house supplies are basic.
There is a washing machine for laundry and a solar hot water system that works very well - even on cloudy days, the shower water was tepid.
The garden is lovely with mature trees and a large swimming pool. As a long term tenant, I maintained the pool and the house cleaning at my own expense and paid the electrical bill. The owner took care of the gas, phone/cable and gardening costs.
The location was also excellent for me with easy access to major roads and downtown. I did not take the bus as I have a vehicle and a bicycle but there are local buses right out the front door. Restaurants, cantinas, shops, theatres, squares, the Paseo... all are within a 20 minute walk or a 30 peso cab ride.
Naturally, when in a home for as long as I was, there were maintenance issues and inconveniences. However, communication and necessary action by both the property manager and the home owner was both timely and satisfactory.
I have recommended this property to others interested in a long term stay.
Let me start by saying that all people involved in the rental of this property are responsive and eager to help. Mario has always responded to emails timely, Hannah has come same day to fix small issue and Anna would clean house for 4 hours to make it superb.
We have been here for 1 week (out of 5) so far and enjoy every minute of the stay.
The best place of the property is kitchen. Very well equipped, lit, and aired. Don't expect to see microwave or a toaster if you are used to them, learn how to "survive" without them. The lack of them was not a problem for us. Master bedroom have air conditioner in it that makes it comfortable to sleep at night.
Living room is spacious though in need of some new (updated) furniture. It has rattan sofas with pillows which are not comfortable to sit on for a prolong amount of time.
The bathroom is beautifully decorated but not practical to use. IT is the middle room and has 3 doors leading to it. The shower has no curtain or door so privacy is out of the question. Keep in mind who is in our party when you stay together.
Overall it is an OK house. For longer periods of time I would prefer more practical living and less antique furniture.
Thank you for your hospitality and allowing us to stay at this house.
As mentioned in the previous review, we thoroughly enjoyed our stay in Merida and in Casa Bonita. Hannah (the house manager) met us at the airport, even though it was quite late and explained everything to us. She was just an e-mail away whenever we needed help or had a question.
Ana (cleaning lady) and the "pool guys" came every week and kept everything beautiful. On our last day Ana even came over at 5:30am to make sure we caught the taxi to the airport alright. So sweet.
The house is as the pictures show. It is nicely appointed, and has a large, very well equipped, kitchen. The patio and courtyard areas are lovely and shaded. Landscaping is very nice. The pool was not however circulating. We were still able to use it, and it was very welcome, as we skimmed it twice a day, put in chlorine granuals every other day and as mentioned the "pool guys" did a complete cleaning every week.
For a long stay, more comfortable living room furniture would have been nice and four chairs outside rather than just 2. We concur with the previous reviewer that some loungers round the pool would also have enhanced the use of that part of the garden.
The house is about a 20min walk to San Diago square where there is a market, super market and butcher. Another 20 mins or so gets you downtown. The sooner you can gain confidence on the bus system the better as on a hot day, carrying groceries, that's a long walk back. Just get on the bus (6M$) and learn the route. The 49 Petronilia route (which goes past the door) will take you downtown to Centro and on the way back you get off at 49 and 76 and walk the block home. You can catch the same bus on 49 and take it out to the Walmart. They have an extensive bakery and fish department that the SuperAki at San Diago, doesn't have. They have a more extensive liquor selection but SuperAki is cheaper for the brands they stock.
The big museum Gran Museo de Mondo Maya is well worth going to (we used a taxi and it was only 40M$. Also the free city museum south of the main Plaza.
In a final note, we were not satisfied by Mario's response to our dispute re our security deposit. Make sure you get in an e-mail exactly what it will cost you to rent. He used our security deposit to charge us more for the house than we had originally agreed on. In his e-mails he obviously believed he was in the right to do so, but we disagreed. We have however ended our dispute, via paypal, with him.
We didn't use the air conditioning, the electricity US$20
Casa Bonita is a charming home located in west Santa Ana. We were met on our arrival by the property mgr who graciously picked us up from the bus. The home is a very functional colonial style layout in a typical Meridano barrio. The house has a charming colour palate with high ceilings and a separate, standalone kitchen/dining bldg with wonderful openness to the courtyard, terraza, and rear pool and yard. Having the separate kitchen kept cooking heat from the house even though the house is generally comfortably cool without the A/C. The Jack and Jill bathroom between the bedrooms is light filled from a ventilation shaft, functional and open with a solar heater providing hot water on all but cloudy days. Water pressure is low which is typical to the area without the addition of pressurized water, a pump. The owner has decorated with a few eclectic whimsical pieces however the furnishings are quite spartan, the beds basic and I would suggest bringing or purchasing pillows. Likewise, the outdoor lacks comfortable seating. The space is nice but for outdoor enjoyment after a swim there is nothing to lounge on. A small steel cafe table with two hard chairs is cute but not comfortable. Some comfortable outdoor furniture would enhance the enjoyment of these areas immensely. WIFI was as fast as at home but the one TV only has antenna reception to fuzzy local Spanish only channels. A DVD player is available. The garage can accommodate a very small car. We always felt safe in the neighbourhood which is a mixture of small business and residential homes and every one we talked to was friendly. The yard was perfect for our small dog. There is an excellent family run cocina economica 1/2 a block north from the corner of Calle 76 and wonderful local stores west on 47 with fresh tortillas, bakery, meat, fruit and veg. The neighbours are quiet generally but Calle 47 can be busy during the day. In the evening you can stroll west to an ice cream counter located in a family home. Santa Ana park and the beginning of the Paseo Montejo with its stores and restaurants is about 15 minutes walk with the Grand Plaza and other sights within a slightly longer walking distance. You won't be in the downtown centre or Gringo Gulch but a little further out.
The property mgr is English, fully bilingual and was quickly responsive to our needs and the weekly cleaning was efficient and regular. Although we never met the owner he was very easy to deal with in a friendly manner. A great stay!
We stayed at Casa Bonita March 7 to April 7, 2013. We have nothing but great things to say about the house and Hannah (house manager) and Ana (cleaning lady and more)however we are having some difficulty getting Mario to return our security deposit. I will write a more complete review and an update re the deposit, when this is resolved. Just wanted to give potential renters a "heads up".
We arrived at Casa Bonita late in the evening to find the manager Hanna waiting for us. She showed us around and were very happy, when we woke up the next morning to the sun shine and the house we were very happy the house was better than the pictures. It was much larger than expected. The only thing we were disappointed in was there were no lounge chairs for the pool. The location was a bit of a walk to things, but we ate so much the exercise was needed. The cantina on Calle76 and 47y45 was excellent and very affordable. There is a very nice french bakery at calle 60 and 41. Hanna was very helpful with information on how to get to certain places, she also recommended some nice markets. It was an enjoyable month and I would recommend this property.
