Breathtaking Atlas Mountain views only an hour away from Marrakech

If you want to wake up to stunning mountain views, then Villa 7 L'Amandier is for you. The sound of birdsong and braying of donkeys is the usual wake-up call with the sun coming up over the mountains and flooding the rooms with light. The front door opens into a large welcoming hall with all the living and bedrooms leading off to either side. The property has two large terraces, one with a plunge pool, the second on the roof, a private garden and use of extensive communal gardens. There is a large communal infinity swimming pool located at the hotel on the complex which is open for our guests' use. The three good-sized bedrooms with air-conditioning open onto an internal courtyard with a fragrant orange tree. Two of the bedrooms have double beds with locally made and sourced furniture with large ensuite bathrooms with a full-sized bath with an overhead shower. The middle bedroom has two single beds furnished with local made furniture and a large shower room. All bedrooms have air-conditioning/heating, hair-dryers, mosquito repellent plugs and black-out curtains to prevent that bright early morning sunshine waking you too early! The sitting and dining rooms, although open plan are separated by a working fireplace. Again all the furniture has been sourced locally and is a mix of antique and modern to reflect the workmanship found in Morocco. Check out the old Berber cupboards in the dining area and entrance hall. We have put in a music centre and dvd player and there are adaptors to take modern pods, etc. Wifi is available. The the sitting and dining rooms and kitchen have floor to ceiling windows which open out onto the terrace with those spectacular views of the mountains. The kitchen is modern and has all mod cons including a dishwasher, coffee making machine, microwave, citrus squeezer and ice-cream maker! We have supplied enough cutlery, crockery and glassware to meet your daily needs as well as unbreakable plates and glasses to take outside. There is a utility room with washing machine and tumbler drier and an iron if you need one! Again we have supplied the villa with sufficient linen, duvets, pillows both feather and micro-fibre, towels to suit all needs from sun-bathing and hair-towels to bath sheets, hand towels and flannels. We have anticipated the changes in weather, yes it does get cold in the winter months, so there are summer and winter weight duvets and flat sheets for those boiling hot nights. The villa has been lovingly furnished with modern and antique pieces sourced in Morocco. The secluded private garden is filled with birdsong and colourful plants with lawned areas on which to relax and a sunken area with kadai fire bowl. Sun-loungers and umbrellas allow you to relax in the sun, a large table and chairs invite you to enjoy alfresco meals. A bespoke fountain created by London based Lucy Smith plays in the garden which encourages wild life. The views from the villa encompass not only the breath-taking mountains but also two plateaux on which the local shepherds graze their sheep and goats. At night, there is no light pollution so the sky is very, very dark and the stars feel so close that you could almost pick them out of the sky. It is not uncommon to watch your own spectacluar shooting star show while enjoying a glass or two of wine. Villa 7 is one of 13 privately owned villas set on a plateau in the Toubkal National Park surrounded by the breath-taking Altlas Mountains. We can highly recommend that you visit the Domaine de la Roseraie about 4 kms from the villa to sample their hospitality sipping tea or wine in their gardens, dipping in their pool or taking in lunch or dinner. We usually walk down to the Roseraie and get a local taxi to bring us back to the villa! Its good to book as dining times can be a bit on the rigid side! Another good place to visit and enjoy is Sir Richard Branson's Kasbah Tamadot at Asni. A very special place with large dining terraces, spa, two great pools and its own "zoo" with camels, donkeys and goats. At the same time visit Eve Branson's shop to purchase some authentic pieces made in Morocco to support her several local charities. Recently opened is Olinto Resort Hotel in Marigha, just a shortish walk down to the village. Our guests are welcome to sample their cuisine and bar as well as enjoying their beautiful landscaped gardens. While staying at L'Amandier, staff are on hand to help with any bookings for near-by or further afield trips ranging from booking a hamman and spa treatments at the Kasbah Tamadot, horse riding at the Domaine de la Roseraie or local trekking to trips down to Marrakech or to the desert or ocean. On your arrival you will receive a simple welcome pack of food and bottled water (please let us know if you have any special needs) and there is a local market and shops in Asni about 20 minutes drive away but we advise stopping en route from Marrakech at Carrefour an excellent supermarket to stock up on supplies, especially alcohol which is not readily available in the Mountains, to meet your daily needs. Villa 7 is self-catering but if you run out of essentials, just tell Abdou at L'Amandier and he can easily arrange for replenishments. L'Amandier is off the beaten track, about 2k from the main road to Ouirgane so having a hire car would be useful but not essential as there are some extremely good and reliable local taxis who are happy to take you on your journeys. For transfers to and from the airport, we can recommend our good friend Mohamed Ait Douch who runs Exotic Lines Travels and he and his competent drivers and modern vehicles can be relied on to get you to and from Marrakech to the Mountains safely. Or further afield to explore Morocco to the full. He is completely trustworthy and speaks several languages including English and French. Marrakech, which feels like a world away with is vibrant Medina and lifestyle, is only just over an hours' drive from the villa. Sir Richard Branson's Kasbah Tamadot, well worth a visit, 20 minutes down the road on the outskirts of Asni on the Imlil Road. This part of Morocco offers a myriad of things to do from the total "not doing anything" to let's go zip-riding or hang-gliding, golf or even skiing. So if you are adventurous or more cautious there is always something to keep you busy. The moods of the mountains are constantly changing ranging from the snow topped peaks in the winter months through to massive thunderstorms with great flashes of lightening, from the bright green of spring to the deep reds of the summers. The earth coloured Berber villages nestling into the mountainsides are barely visible to the naked eye but they are all around clustered onto the steepest slopes. The Berber people themselves are incredibly friendly and delightful. Make friends with them and you will be invited into their homes to meet their families and learn about their lives. But why restrict yourselves to just one area, break your visit into two destinations and spend time in the bustle of Marrakech or by the seaside at Essouira or Meknes the fertile area that produces fruit, vegetables, wine and roses. Or even visit the desert and take a camel ride and spend time in a Berber tent. There is so much to try and discover in this amazing country.

Wonderful villa and gardens, great mountain views and stunning night skys
We stayed from October 18th to 25th. We were a little concerned with the weather when we landed early morning at Marrakech as it was cloudy and a little cool, we shouldn't have been as other than the first day the daytime temperatures were always in the 80s and sometimes even low 90s fahrenheit with very little cloud. The villa was spacious, tastefully decorated and very well equipped in all areas. Beds comfortable, water pressure good in all bathrooms, towels in all shapes and size of good quality, everything you could need in the kitchen, a dvd player with dvds provided and a small music system. Our only minor complaint would be is that you can not connect to the wi-fi from the villa, for this you would have to go closer to the hotel (where the wi-fi signal comes from) The hotel is not currently open but will be a great asset when it is as you could then eat and grab a drink there if you did not fancy cooking or going further afield. There are 13 villas in total and I would say Villa 7 has the best position by far and as a result of this also the best views, the gardens of the villa were beautiful with plenty of flowers still in bloom and plenty of bird song with lots of exotic birds regularly visiting the gardens and terrace, including an extremely tame Levaillants woodpecker and a very chatty group of Bulbuls. The roof terrace had great views and was ideal for star gazing, we saw shooting stars on most nights. The communal gardens were also lovely to stroll around and the team of gardeners that maintain them always friendly. Would recommend a tagine and some couscous from Abdou and his team rather than going to the Domaine de la Roseraie, it was much tastier and a fraction of the cost. Abdou was always on hand to pick up local shopping for us and offer and advice as was his brother Saiid who I enjoyed many interesting and varied conversations with. All in all a wonderfully relaxing week in late October with plenty of sun yet only 3-4 hours away from London.Think we might pop back when the hotel is open so we can have an even lazier week than we had !

Sobre o anfitrião

Anfitrião: Villa 7 L'Amandier

Imagem do perfil do anfitrião
We are two sisters who live near London and are also the greatest of friends. Alex is an interior designer and I, Sally, am an international landscape designer. As youngsters we travelled the world with our parents and eventually settled back in in the UK in Surrey. Alex has two daughters who are following in our footsteps by not only being sisters but also the greatest of friends. Alex is always threatening to retire but something always comes up to prevent her from actually hanging up her pattern books. I have no intention of retiring for some considerable time apart from the fact that I would love to spend more time at the Villa! Both of us are extremely busy and do not understand how to actually slow down. Our families, although initially bemused by our venture in Morocco are thoroughly supportive and now that they too have visited on numerous occasions are as in love with Morocco, Marrakech, Villa 7 and our Berber friends as we are. Certainly it came as a surprise to both Alex and I that we when we decided to buy a second home that it wasn't within kicking distance to our home base. Although today there is considerable concern regarding the unstable situation in other parts of North Africa we have never felt threatened in Morocco. Morocco is ruled by a very forward thinking king, Mohammed VI, who works extremely hard to bring Morocco into the 21st C. He is tackling the immense problems of poverty and corruption while improving the poor human rights record. He is very much the liberal leader today and is whole-heartedly supported by his subjects. His considerable investment in tourism, which he sees as one of Morocco's key industries, is to be seen everywhere. It was knowing his philosophy that helped us make this key decision to purchase a villa in Ouirgane.

Por que o anfitrião escolheu essa propriedade

For several years I had visited Asni (staying at the Kasbah Tamadot) with a girlfriend. It was just an amazing experience. Within minutes of being in the Atlas Mountains you felt the benefits of clear air, blue skies, white snow-capped mountains and peace. A holistic experience. On my first trip I took a walk through the mountains, slipped an broke my wrist. This accident did nothing to diminish my growing love of the country. The help and care that I experienced was fabulous. We still know Adbul who helped me down to Marrakech to get my wrist set and also know his family, mother, brother, sisters, cousins and now his wife and children. In fact we are friends ten years later with many of the people I met on that first trip. I thought it was time to introduce Alex to the Atlas Mountains. Within a short space of time, she too was in love with the area. On this trip, quite unexpectedly we visited a plateau in the Toubkal National Park. A small development of 13 private villas and boutique hotel was in the early days of construction. The views were just so beautiful, the tranquility was almost palpable. And we knew that we had found our second home. At that stage it was just a skeleton but we could see that this contemporary low-lying building was going to be a fabulous retreat from the hurly burly at home. The developer, a British company, MHK International, and the architect, Nick Gowing, seem to have captured the essence of the Berber village nestling in the mountains without being a pastiche. The private gardens would provide a sense of security and privacy while the communal gardens would provide a scenic link to the other villas and the proposed hotel. The hotel amenities would also be offered to the villa owners and their guests so the villa, although in the middle of the plateau, would not be cut-off from civilisation. And then there was that view. How could we walk away? Our villa, at the end of the development has the best aspect of all!

O que faz essa propriedade ser única?

We fell in love with this spacious three bedroomed villa. Although it appears compact it is actually very roomy and there is enough space to not be on top of one another. It is built from traditional materials and earth coloured plaster. Only one storey high. Throughout the villa traditional methods and materials have been used from the tadelakt walls through to the bejmat tiles but modern amenities have been integrated into the build. Inside you enter into a large hall furnished with modern and traditional Moroccan pieces reflecting the red earth colours. All the major rooms lead off the hall, including the three large bedrooms called: Rose, Gold and Blue. Their ceiling to floor doors open out onto a small private courtyard with its fragrant orange tree. The sun rises in the morning over the mountains and warms these rooms as the light streams through the windows. On the other side of the hall is the open-plan living area. Again ceiling to floor windows and doors open out onto the private terrace, but the most important feature of this aspect is the view of the mountains and almond plateau. Absolutely breath-taking. Often in the morning you will walk out onto the terrace in your dressing gown to just admire the magnificent view and listen to the bird song. You can while away a lot of time just absorbing the atmosphere. What's even just as special is watching the shepherds walking their sheep and goats along the edge of the garden to their pastures. They used to stop off and crop our grass until the perimeter fence was erected. A plunge pool on the terrace helps you cool down if it all gets too hot. If you want even more impressive views, there is the roof terrace which comes into its own at night when the skies offer even more distraction with glorious sunsets and at then the stars - just incredible.
