Great Family Retreat
My friends and I who live in DC have been renting a house for the last several years as a fall weekend getaway. As our families have gotten bigger its been harder to find a place that meets all our needs. I think we found a keeper in the sunridge retreat. It fit 8 adults and 7 kids no problem. The master suite is especially nice with an on suite bathroom. The kitchen and living room areas are spacious and large. There is even a bonus game room with ping pong, air hockey and foosball. Outside there is a nice playground area and fire pit and there is a jacuzzi on the back deck. I really could not ask for much more. A few minor inconveniences were a large number of stink bugs, some higher grade pots and pans, and maybe a few more ktichen suppliers. Otherwise it fit our needs perfectly. We will likely be back!
Hayden, thanks telling others! We appreciate the kind words. And thanks for the suggestions. We'll look into the kitchen items you recommended.
Our family of eight adults and one 21 month old thoroughly enjoyed our stay over Labor Day weekend at Sunridge Retreat in the Shenandoah. The pluses included both the enclosed side porch for children to use as well as the garage that has been converted into a game room that the adults enjoyed. The hot tub was also a plus in the evenings to unwind before bed. The swing/slide set in the yard was used by the other grandchildren who came over to visit one of the nights. The kitchen was adequately stocked to cook most of our meals; the grill on the front porch was adequate for our needs (just a park size grill). Cons: we found out the day we were arriving that the satellite dish was not working and wouldn't be fixed during our stay (meaning no streaming as well as any tv). For some groups this might be a major problem, but because none of us rely much on tv, and because they also had a whole binder of movie cd's available for use, it wasn't a problem for us. Another important point for anyone bringing a young child is you would definitely need to bring a WIDE moveable gate along. The opening is close to 48"(?) and the gate we brought wasn't large enough. We improvised by using the gate and moving the small coffee table to use on the other side. But amazon does sell 50" wide gates. All-in-all, we would definitely recommend this house. Also forgot to mention that even though the driving instructions say to not use the actual house address, it worked every time for all of our drivers.
Family summer vacation in the Shenandoah Mountains
We enjoyed our week at the Sunridge Retreat. There were 10 of us, grandma and pop pop, 4 adult 30 somethings, and 4 grandkids, ages 7,8,10,11. There was much room for the 10 of us, we could have invited 10 more family based on sleeping arrangements.
We had wonderful fires 4 of the 7 nights due to rain other nights.
Sunridge is about 15 minutes from the town of Luray, 15 minutes from the entrance to Shenandoah National Park, 40 minutes to Massanutten Resort, 30 minutes to Shenandoah River tubing and canoeing.
There were more than enough sheets blankets and towels.
We were surprised by the drive into the Retreat in that the last two miles are on unpaved road, curvy and up the mountain. We drove in and out only once per day because we were afraid our car tires would be damaged. I will say that once we were used to the drive in, it was an ok drive. However I would not recommend following the GPS from the town of Stanley, as the roads that way are longer and also unpaved.
Anyone renting should definitely bring paper plates, silverware, and cups as the cupboards are not stocked for more than 12 people, so the dishwasher would need to be run after each meal. We brought paper products so we were ok.
We were also not happy with having to pay to have the garbage to be removed. The charge is $5 per bag, and since there are so few dishes (and who wants to constantly wash dishes on vacation) necessitating the use of paper products, the garbage did accumulate. We finally burned some in the fire pit! There was also no recycling bins so all cans, plastics, and glass was garbage. The recommendation was to take the garbage 5-7 miles to a garbage center in Luray. I wonder who wants to do so on a vacation??
At +$350 per night I think the garbage should not be an additional charge!
Overall as with any rental there are positives and negatives.
We wanted to be in a rural environment for our grandkids and this fit that.
We went to Luray Caverns, Massanutten Waterpark, hiking in Shenandoah National Park, tubing on the Shenandoah River, swimming at Jellystone Park( they offer day passes), and wine tasting at Wisteria Winery that offers an area for kids to play!
So if you are looking for an area with lots of activities, this is great!
Perfect Property for our Gathering
Property was just as advertised and shown in the pictures (maybe the only thing you can't tell from the pix is that the game room is a converted garage, which we actually didn't use at all). Beautiful setting looking up at Shenandoah National Park. Property was clean, plenty of space, communication was excellent. Were there for a getaway bridal shower....bride said it was absolutely perfect - hard to beat that!
Great for large groups
Spacious and clean, great host, a little sparce - could use a few more warm touches. A very nice stay, would do again.
Great Retreat from DC
Our group from DC loved coming to this house to getaway. We struggled not being able to connect to wifi in the beginning (there is a signal but generally only worked for 2-3 people at a time) but once we decided to just enjoy ourselves at the house people quickly got over it. The view from the hot tub is great. The kitchen was stocked with utensils we needed. The coffee pot was unfortunately broken when we got there but we just went into town to get coffee instead.
