Farm Capanne di Sopra is located 1.2 kms from the hamlet of Montefollonico, in a quiet setting which enjoys the unmatched skyline of Montepulciano, with its masterpiece temple of San Biagio, Val d’Orcia's hilly border and top of Mount Amiata.
The property is situated on a slope at 450 meters of altitude, covering a 5 hectars hilly surface, with an olive grove and a small vineyard, which give an “extravergine” olive oil, and a Chianti Colli Senesi DOCG red wine.
The two stone farmhouses of the property -six sleeping places each- have been restored in accordance with Tuscan traditions, and carefully furnished with owner's family pieces. The two houses, although closed one another, are independent and assure absolutely privacy to residents. The houses are fully equipped for six: in the kitchen, bedrooms and bathrooms. Barbecues in the kitchen (wood is available). The houses have: drinkable water from public utility, instant hot water, telephone, washing machines and central heating. Baby cots and high chairs. There are a number of sun chairs and iron made chairs and table to dine outside.
To preserve the rural character of the site, the owners chose not to build any swimming pool. In any city nearby there is a public swimming pool. Moreover ,thermal spas of Chianciano, Bagno Vignoni, Bagni San Filippo and Rapolano Terme are no more than half an hour drive.
Farmhouse Banditello (6 people, about 1405 sf.), restored in 1999, enjoys a splendid view towards south and west with large hay for sitting outside.
A three entrance ground floor, with french windows to the garden, has a large kitchen completely equipped ( gas machine with oven, fridge, fire place-barbecue, washing machine) with store room besides. The kitchen leads into a two room lounge with a tuscan fire place at one end, furnished with antique pieces of furniture and many sofas and armchairs. A small toilet is available at ground floor.
Stone steps take to first floor wich has a master bedroom with en-suite bathroom (tub) and splendid view over Montepulciano valley. Other two twin bedrooms share a bathroom with shower. Wrought iron beds, old rustic furniture, small wooden toilet mirrors, doors and in wall- wardrobes have been choosen according tuscan country tradition. Frames and mattresses are orthopedic. The house is airy and bright all day long. Central heating is available.Panoramic space outside equipped with chaises-longues and iron-made chairs and table. Drinkable water from public utility.
When the gravel track road opened up onto Villa Banditello my first reaction was that this must be paradise. The house is completely off the beaten track positioned in its own beautiful and large garden that spills out into the olive groves and vineyards surrounding the property and further down into the valley below. The grounds are storybook picturesque with nothing obstructing the view and on the hill opposite the garden you have the hilltop town of Montepulciano.
I don't normally splurge but this house is something else. The interior is large and comfortable, tastefully (and it seems, lovingly) furnished by the owners. The bed was comfortable, the linens and towels spotlessly clean, the bathrooms large, the living rooms (there are actually two of them) airy and very comfortable. The furniture was not the eclectic assortment that you sometimes find in vacation rentals. It was in character with the house and some of the pieces are of the type you see in antique stores in Tuscany and wish you could carry away with you. The kitchen has everything you need for cooking at home, the stove is large and modern and it is supplied with much more than the bare essentials.
We are hikers and there is no shortage of beautiful hiking trails (the white trails of Tuscany) in the area. There is an abundance of beautiful hill towns to visit in the area, but we also took day trips to Florence (under an hour and a half by car) and visited Umbria.
To top it all the owners, Michele and Cristina, are the perfect hosts. We were lucky to have had the opportunity to meet them in person and they gave us the feeling that we were indeed their guests rather than random renters. We had a wonderful stay in this very special house and are certain that we shall return.
We stayed in the Villa Banditello this past July, and it was the perfect base from which to explore the neighbouring hill towns of Montepulciano, Montefollonico, Pienza, Siena, etc. The villa is 5 minutes outside of Montefollonico (great restaurant here called 13 Gobbi, where the owner/chef makes home made fettuccini in a hollowed out peccorino cheese rind, scraping the melted cheese down into the pasta .. yum!). It is situated in its own vineyards and olive groves, and is beautifully appointed, right down to a wood oven (in addition to the regular one). The kitchen was very well equipped, the washing machine worked perfectly, bedrooms and bathrooms were spacious, bright and clean, and the views . . . well they were pretty much "storybook"! Michele personally spoke to us on the phone as we arrived, to be sure that we had all we needed. The housekeeper was there to greet us, and showed us everthing we needed to know. There is lots of room for parking. Furnishings, books and art are plentiful and tasteful. It really is a home away from home. There was even a bottle of the vineyard's own red wine waiting for us on arrival. Thank you Michele and Cristina! We would like to return this summer again in July! We will contact you!
We stayed in this villa for 5 nights in April and had a most wonderful time. The house was spacious and clean and beautifully decorated. When we arrived, it was late afternoon and the view with the sunset took our breath away! It was more beautiful than we could ever have imagined. Our time here was so peaceful. We loved every minute of it.
We had a little difficulty following the hand drawn map but the housekeeper was very helpful and we followed her in the car. The owner, Michele, just happened to be up from Rome while we were there, so we were able to meet him. He was a lovely gentleman, very interesting and pleasant with lots of information about the area. He was helpful and also left us in peace to enjoy our holiday.
There are two houses on the property, very close together. Lucky for us, no one was staying in the other house while we were there. We went for walks and drives in the area. The nearby village is lovely with restaurants and a small grocery store.
We stayed in the larger house. There was one main bedroom and 3 twin bedrooms. The beds were comfortable. The bathrooms were clean and excellent shower (an italian style - hose in the bath). The kitchen was well-equiped with lovely glassware and crockery. The heating was a little bit difficult to understand how to work, but once it worked it was perfect. We used the open fire which was cosy. There is a table with comfy chairs for eating al fresco with a spectacular view of Montepulciano and fields and forests.
You definitely need a car to stay here. It's off the beaten track which means it's very quiet and peaceful. It took us about 2 hours to drive here from Florence. There is no internet and there is no tv.
We loved our stay here and recommend it highly! If we could come back to Italy, we would definitely stay here again!
We were a group of eight adults... two of us celebrating our 50th anniversary and our adult children and friends. We occupied both Banditello and Mulinello for most of a week...the capstone of our two weeks in Italy. To say that the accommodations were superb would be an understatement! Both casas were warm and inviting, beautifully furnished and appointed, with modern kitchens and bathrooms and lovely, comfy furniture- much of which was antique. We cooked nearly all our evening meals in the fabulous kitchen of Banditello, and gathered around the fireplace in the evenings to share stories of each day's activities. The younger generation walked to Montefollonico for groceries, while the seniors spent time taking in the views of the vineyards and olive groves that surround the casas on all sides. Some of our days were spent touring the nearby medieval hill towns and monasteries. Other times we enjoyed just reading, relaxing, and soaking up the atmosphere. The owners, who live in Rome, checked in each day by phone, and the local caretaker, Maddelena, also paid a short visit each day to answer any questions (how to operate the washing machine, the heating system, etc.) She was delightful! It has long been a dream of ours to stay in a 'real' Tuscan farmhouse, and these beautifully restored homes exceeded our greatest expectations. Everything was perfect. We hope to return to Le Capanne di Sopra!
My spouse and I had stayed at Banditello previously and had a marvelous time, so we tried Mullinello this time. Our hosts were magnificent and helpful as usual and the lodgings were exceptionally clean and welcoming. At one point, Michele even apologized for the rain! The setting was superb and we took long quiet walks along the country roads lined with woods and pastures and vineyards, ate dinner and bought groceries at nearby Montefollonico, and made day trips to favorite spots in Tuscany. Such gracious and friendly people made it certain that we shall return. This is the spot if you want quiet to read and talk and you need the view of Montepulciano across the valley. Many thanks to our hosts for their hospitality to Americans who want to be Italian!
Montefollonico is at 7 kms from Montepulciano and 5 km from Torrita di Siena. Take A1 Highway ( Autostrada del sole) and leave it at Val di Chiana or Chiusi exit. Then you need about half an hour drive to the farm. The closest Railway station is at Chiusi, on the Roma – Firenze line, about 15 miles away. At reservation we will forward you a detailed road map and instructions.
Some 400 meters from the paved road, the site remains secluded while accessible only via a private driveway, ensuring that you'll be staying undisturbed, in the midst of olive groves, vineyards and woods.
Parking area at the entrance of the property.
Historical and cultural sites nearby include Montepulciano, Pienza, Montalcino, Cortona, Chiusi, Monte San Savino, Siena, Arezzo, Perugia and Lake Trasimeno which are all within 75 minutes drive. The thermal spas and bathing at Chianciano, Bagno Vignoni, Bagni San Filippo and Rapolano are no more than half an hour's drive away. There are three swimming pools within 10 kilometers and tennis courts, horseback riding and mountain biking are nearby.
Montefollonico provides basic services as food shops, post office, bank, pharmacy, restaurants, and sport bar.
