After a very interesting 3 days in Porto, it was an easy 45-min drive to Bravaes where we were warmly welcomed by Teresa, who was a helpful but unobtrusive host. The cottage is sympathetically restored, clean, and with very good modern bathrooms and a reasonably well-equipped kitchen. We were a little surprised to find that the two cottages are quite close together, which didn't seem obvious from the description. (Or perhaps we didn't read it properly!)
Our intention on this holiday was to combine relaxation with just enough sightseeing and we managed to do this beautifully! We had a great time exploring the little villages and towns, and loved the fact that the region is so steeped in tradition. We particularly enjoyed the area around the espigueiros at Lindoso and Soajo, and the atmosphere of Viana do Castelo. A bit further afield, Guimaraes made a good day out. However, don't forget to spend time enjoying Ponte da Barca - a few days of pottering around the town, sitting at the cafes watching the locals, and canoeing on the river. It's also worth going to the Wednesday market - even if you aren't tempted by the chickens or ducklings! There are also good walks near the cottage itself.
After our days out, it was lovely to just relax either at the delightful pool or on the cottage's patio with a good book and a glass (or two!) of one of the excellent local wines at hand, enjoying the tranquility. We tended to eat out most days (easy to do well and cheaply - the only mistake we made was a meal at the Moinho in P da Barca; avoid it!), preferring to prepare just a simple meal in the evenings. However, if you intend to cook more elaborate family meals, be aware this could prove a little frustrating on a cooker which does need updating!
Overall a lovely holiday in the Minho and we certainly hope to visit again! (Thanks Bergen for responding quickly and efficiently to all our queries - very important).
Our week staying at Casa Jovali was exceptional and exceeded all our expectations. Everything from the traditionally renovated cottage with comfortable beds, stunning views from the balcony to the idyllic pool, and beautifully landscaped grounds was superb. The hosts Manuel and Terese were exceptionally welcoming, and ready with advice for local sightseeing, shopping etc. We couldn't recommend it highly enough for those wanting a complete escape from the hustle and bustle of city life. Electing for a rural setting rather than a coastal holiday had been debated at length, but after our week in Bravaes I'm now a firm fan of the rural inland holiday. Less crowds, more relaxed and welcoming locals, beautiful hillside vistas.... it had everything!
We had the fortune of staying in both houses on this property during this holiday. The setting is perfect - at the edge of a small vineyard overlooking the mountains. Yet, you are only 4km from Ponte da Barca. Javali has a lovely ack porch with a mountain view and Corca, slighly larger, has some lovely trees to put the picnic table under and simply enjoy the outdoors. Thw owner is extremely helpful and welcoming and has done a fantatsic job renovating both houses. The swimming pool was used extensively by the entire family. On your visit, don't miss Porto, The National Park and Ponte da Lima. For the beaches, we particularly enjoyed Afife, which is just north of Viana de Castelo.
A perfect holiday! We will return!
We were with 5 people, from 21 to 85 years old, and enjoyed this one week holiday very much. The house was nice and clean, one could see that it was restored with respect. Also the garden was idyllic and the swimmingpool was fantastic. To make a dinner everything was available and to eat it in the shadow of the very old olivetrees was sublime. We also visited some towns and villages (Lindoso and Soajo) in the neighbourhood. The national park, Peneda Geres, partly in Spain, was not far away. Also the beach above Viano de Castelo was very nice. The owners were very helpfull and friendly. And when you need a dentist, there is a very good one in Ponte de Barca, not even 10 minutes away.
We stayed at this property in August and had a wonderful two weeks. The owner was welcoming, friendly and helpful, and the accommodation was pleasant and full of character. The surrounding countryside was beautiful, and we could get to the national park, into Spain, to some picturesque towns, or to the beach in good time. Our weather was very good. We had a minor problem with one of the two showers, and there might have been a little more outdoor equipment (loungers, BBQ etc), but I also have to admit that we did not give feedback on either until after we had left. All in all this was an excellent holiday. We would recommend and it, and we would return again.
