i met maarten and his wife and they are lovely and took good care of the house.
The best of the five were we stayen in Italy, wonderful!
Thanks Lauri, I want to tell you what a great time we had there., . It was our favorite place of the 5 we stayed in. It is well equipped and we loved the height of the fireplace. We did use heat as it was very damp cold while we were there. We had 3 major thunder storms with over an inch of rain in each, but it did not keep us from having fun. One day we did nothing but set out in the sun and enjoy the site! Two restaurants in the area are highly recommended , the first is Senze Tempo close to the home and second La Pieve Vecchia. We met and became friends with the manager of both, Carollina, and were treated like old friends. You are lucky to own this property in this area! Thanks for making it available to us. Wonderful Authentic Umbrian/Tuscan Countryside Experience
This was my second visit to "Chiarella" in as many years (in fact my last stay was only 51weeks earlier!!). The property is located in a very charming and delightfully private setting, on a hillside overlooking a valley amid the rolling hills on the boarder of Umbria and Tuscany.
The house is clean and well kept. A fridge, gas stove, washer, satellite tv, full tiled bathroom, spacious bedrooms, bar-b-q.
You definitely need a car to stay at this property. The location is within a 30 minute drive of Arezzo ( and it's train station), you are only 20 minutes from places like Anghiari, Sansepolcro, and about an hour drive to Chianti, Cortona, Asissi, Gubbio, and Perugia. In between the house and these destinations there are innumerable small hill towns and villages to explore. The house was a total refuge - after a day of driving and touring around, to arrive at "Chiarella" after a stop at the Supermarkato in Monterchi, you can make your own pasta, veal, chicken, sausage, or chicken dish in the authentic Italian countryside.
I thoroughly enjoyed both of my 14 day visits to "Chiarella". I was traveling alone -with my camera - on a photography holiday, I really enjoyed being close to the countryside. I appreciated the opportunity to stay at "Chiarella" and hope to return again in the not to distant future.
Tranquil and Convenient
Lovely property, excellently maintained w/ simple rustic decor reflecting rural Italian life.
Delightfully tucked away from the road, yet easy to find. HUGE bedrooms ... both loft and lower level. Would definately recommend those using loft bedroom are somewhat agile and comfortable climbing up/down the ship's-type ladder. TONS of books, videos, games to enjoy. Fully updated, modern bathroom. The kitchen sink is unique ... you could bath a child in it ... and, overall the "cucina" is basic, but functional. Wish it had been warmer so that we could enjoyed using the al fresco dining facilities.
Stone walls provide a cool oasis after a day's touring and the cottage is close to a real art treasure museumed in a nearby town. Be sure to check it out if you visit, here.
Convenient to most everything w/excellent roads. Interesting local sites and artisans to visit.
Owner (Laurie) is most helpful and easy to work with.
A car is a must.
THANK YOU for allowing us to visit your Italian home and enjoy its many features. Would like to rent it, again on my next trip if it is available. My friends want to let you know should you ever decide to sell ... well, I told them to not hold their collective breath. Who would ever give up such a gem?
My fiance and I stayed at Chiarella for a week in late September 2010, following a week in Florence and 10 days touring Ireland. It was a wonderful break from the hurly-burly, but still felt like "vacation". The little house sits on a sunny hillside, down a gravel drive from the rural road - so quiet. Our arrival sent red deer running into the adjacent forest from the small vineyard. We had sunny, warm days and wonderful crisp harvest-season nights - we greatly enjoyed the down comforters that came with the house: cozy! We took day trips all over Tuscany and Umbria (45 min west to the Autostrada at Arezzo or 30 minutes east over country roads to Sansepolcro and the E45) but then came home and cooked every night and watched movies from the excellent collection at the house. We hugely enjoyed shopping at the local small grocery store, and having wine or espresso with Marcello, the proprietor. [He was a hearty, welcoming tonic after the jaded, barely-civil locals we encountered in Florence.] My fiance went running every morning down the road to Monterchi, while I power walked up the hill in the opposite direction. We both encountered tractors and farm equipment coming and going from the tobacco harvest. The Sunday we were there was the first day of hunting season, and it was very intriguing to hear the hunting dogs running back and forth through the woods under the bedroom window with their little bells tinkling, and the sound of distant gunfire. However, we enjoyed the cinghale (sp?) on our dinner plates and appreciated the reminder of where our meat comes from. Anyway, we would come back in a heartbeat, and the proprietor of the house was totally professional and fun to work with. And, really, her taste in movies is excellent.
Chiarella is the most charming and relaxing place. Conveniently located to quaint little hilltop towns many of which we stopped in for lunch during our day trips. Also, it's not far from the larger cities of Perugia, Siena and Florence which were great for shopping. We felt Chiarella was the perfect nesting spot in Umbria. During September it is truffle season...Added culinary bonus as we stayed in several nights to cook and enjoy feeling like we actually lived there! My only complaint is that we didn't stay longer. Hopefully the next time...and there will be a next time!
