With a 3 week stay in this lovely property, and friends visiting for one week, there was plenty of time to enjoy the ambiance. We had been tempted by the photographs and were not disappointed. The location was perfect as a base for day trips to hill towns and larger towns, i.e. Arles, Orange, St Remy de Provence, Uzes (many times!) The village was very quiet at night, but had a shop almost next door where we could buy croissants, stamps etc. Also an excellent alimentaire for provisions (lettuce and shoe polish!) No one speaks English but, my husband who speaks no French, found the owners very helpful.
Britta was extremely helpful, with a provisions including wine, left for us in the beginning, and proved to be quickly responsive to any queries we had. As she lives only 20 minutes away her local knowledge is excellent.
For a special meal, we would recommend the Hostellerie Provencale in Uzes where we enjoyed a celebratory lunch with an excellent Montaren et St. Mediers wine. Montaren is also worth a visit, along with Castillon, and for art Cornillon. We found the best supermarket to be the small but perfectly formed Carrefour in Uzes where we could buy fresh milk, very important for New Zealanders!
We are very happy to recommend this property for a stay in the Gard, whether for only one week or longer as we never felt that 3 weeks was too long, indeed it really felt like home, our only regret was that as it was so early in Spring we didn't have enough warm weather to enjoy sitting in the charming garden with a good book, and therefore missed out on eating out on the sunny terrace as much as we wished. Indeed we are already planning to return!
My sister and I stayed here for one week in late April 2011. The rental process was easy, and Britta was very attentive throughout our stay, checking to be sure all was in order. The house was as charming as pictured, nestled on a corner in the village of St. Marcel. It is an authentic, well-maintained village house, with a lovely vine-covered terrace, well equipped kitchen, good lighting, great beds & linens, and modern bathrooms. Britta provided starter provisions - a local bottle of wine, baguette, breakfast foods including eggs, milk, lettuce, tomatoes, cucumber, oil & vinegar, and fresh fruits. There is easy on street parking and the stairs are very easy to navigate. The local boulangerie was just steps from our door, with the green grocer and a welcoming cafe with a friendly proprietor just a bit further, on the village square, with its beautiful 18th C. church. We loved the hourly church bells (daytime only!). Our only "complaint" was the living room furniture is a bit worn and not as comfortable as hoped for.
St. Marcel is a great base for taking day trips out, and is surrounded by beautiful vineyards. We visited many of the small local villages - Goudargues was a surprise find on market day (Sunday) as were beautiful St. Quentin la Poterie and Castillon du Gard - along with larger towns - Uzes (our favorite!), Orange, Nimes, Avignon, Arles, and the Camargue - the flamingos were thrilling! - not to mention the amazing Pont du Gard. We would definitely come back again, not only to this beautiful Gard Provencal region - as beautiful as the more famous Luberon and less touristy - but to St. Marcel and the lovely and comfortable Maison des Cerises.
We have really enjoyed our stay at Maison des Cerises and only wished we had booked a second week. The area is lovely and we visited Uzes, the Pont du Gard, Avignon, Bagnols-sur-Ceze (don’t miss the exquisite art gallery), la Roque-sur-Ceze, Orange (fabulous Roman Theatre) and the nearby Harmas de Jean-Henri Fabre (fascinating and very tranquil).
Apart from eating lunch snacks at various cafes we ate produce from the local shop; which stocks great fruit & vegetables, wonderful goats cheese (very nice baked), various meats including sumptuous pork roasted with garlic and most importantly has a very helpful shopkeeper.
It was great to stay in a working village and listen to the world go past as we sat soaking up the sun on the terrace or garden.
A very lovely holiday; greatly helped by Britta’s care and attention to detail.
