Clean place beautiful lake needs some updates
Clean, the lake was nice and bonfire was too. But the cottage needs updates need new tv it has a small box tv very outdated and no air condition and the heater was old and loud but worked
Fyi bring bug spary the mosquitos where horrible
Hi Acacia, Thank you for your review! The homeowner would like to respond with the following: "Yes, this is our 'rustic' cabin. We have been able to rebuild the other cabin, Sandpiper, which I am sure that you have seen is absolutely modern. The small TV will be replaced, and we are attempting to get Township approval to improve the cabin for next year. I am optimistic! Thank you for noticing that we do keep our cabins very clean. As far as the mosquitos are concerned, I use Mosquito dunks and fog, but, this year has been a 'horror movie' in West Michigan as well as Wisconsin for mosquitos. Believe me, I wish it were otherwise. Again, thank you for choosing Lodge on the Lake!" Best, the Evolve Team
Perfect Girl's Weekend
Having read through the previous reviews before our stay, I knew to expect the cottage to be smaller than it appeared in pictures. It was a very relaxing space for my friend and me on our girl's weekend. The beds were comfortable, the space was clean, and the proximity to the beach was perfect. Just for the record, the missing daybed that other reviews complained about has been replaced by a futon. While we didn't use it, I have one like it and it is quite comfortable. I would recommend bringing dishtowels along with bathroom towels. There are two vintage linen dishtowels, but if you eat in as much as we did, they won't see you through. Do be aware that the bathroom is quite tiny. My friend and I are both rather petite and even we found it to be on the small side. The complaints about it getting warm inside are probably valid, as there is very little airflow given the way the cottage is rather protected on all sides. We were there on a cooler weekend, so it wasn't an issue for us. But you forget about all that when you get down to the water. On your way, use caution going through the dune grass, as it can be quite sharp. It's worth it, though. Sitting up top in the evening with a glass of wine, watching the sun set, was spectacular. The next day we tossed our plans to antique and instead spent the day relaxing and reading on the beach, meeting all kinds of people and their dogs as they walked past. It was a fantastic weekend and I am sure we will return.
A wonderful stay at the lake.
This rental is special. It meets your basic needs with 2 comfortable beds and the basics. The cottage is nestled in the woods just a hop, skip and jump from a marvelous beach on Lake Michigan. If you don´t require luxury this is a great place to stay. Some tweeks are needed but for a better experience but I would return for another dose!
Location trumps lodging. Cabin not cottage....
3.5 stars. Only saved by the outdoors and the price point.
-The beach is beautiful, walkable in both directions
-The overlook with chairs is amazing.
-The fire pit area was fairly private, by parking area.
-The beach staircase railing has exposed nails, loose boards, broken handrails.
- loose toliet, patched, but eventually somebody's gonna have a very bad day.
-Floor by kitchen/bath slopes
-There is no air conditioning. Seriously, a window unit would make a huge difference. No ventilation, small windows. 90s without evening cooling; very hot/stuffy/difficult to sleep. The fans just move hot air around.
-linens- we brought sheets/personal towels. But no kitchen towels.
-Basic amenities: There was 1/2 a roll of paper towel and one (one!!!) extra roll of toilet paper. We had to make an emergency/unplanned trip to the store. One garbage bag. Two more bags were dropped off mid-week.
-Community supplies- previous cottage rentals had community supplies: ie, basic condiments in the fridge, basic spices in the pantry, general oil/cooking spray, and tinfoil, Saran wrap, etc. You use what you need/ leave extras at will. I assume owners clean this stuff out annually. Tossing is wasteful/inconvenient to purchase.
-kitchen basics--the owners need to try living here for a week. There is inadequacy coupled with redundancy. Two bread pans (who bakes on vacay in a 1/2 sized oven??), but NO bowls for mixing or salad!
-The fridge is sketchy. It barely kept stuff cold even on lowest setting.
-The power went off multiple times. If this is common, a generator maybe...sucks to lose food.
--Big suggestion: dump the spare bedroom bed. Put in 2-3 bunkbeds. My 12 year old is adult sized and sharing with my 9 year old was a no go. (And if you have diff gender kids?!) We bought and crammed in a twin airmattress...uncomfortable all week. The beds are super high...I would have freaked about falls when my kids were younger. Bonus- get a queen for the other and a shelf/smaller nightstand. Dresser was unusable as drawers hit bed. And hard to pass by.
Day bed pictured isn't there. Crappy outdoor furniture that slides apart instead, NOT sleepable.
Owners showed up on 4th of July with family/friends and hung out at beach. And used beach an additional day. Very uncomfortable and unexpected. We have never had owners use properties for personal use on previous rentals. Should be in the disclosure (or just NOT done!!).
Listing isn't accurate; Lake is beautiful
While we expected this home to be small and less luxurious than the adjacent home on the property, we were disappointed that the listing and pictures did not accurately reflect what was presented. We certainly enjoyed our vacation regardless, but we may have chosen a different spot with better information. Our review is meant to provide that information to future travelers; we’ll happily re-rate “Evergreen” if/when the pictures and listing are updated.
1. The pictures show a daybed. The write up says that this can be used as an additional sleeping accommodation. The daybed is not there. It was replaced with two outdoor corner chairs that are pushed together to form a loveseat. We ended up purchasing a blow up mattress so, when needed, we could sleep on the floor next to our toddler who slept on the loveseat. The loveseat wasn’t a suitable option for an adult sleeper. Four pillows were provided in the cottage (enough only for the beds).
2. The pictures truly seem to "scale up" certain aspects of the cottage. While the listing does not indicate that there is a bath tub, the members of our party agreed that the picture makes the existing small shower look much more like a bath tub. Similarly, the pictures make the kitchen area look much larger. The range is in fact a compact 20” model. There is an approximately 18”x18” counter for food prep.
3. The beach IS beautiful but the house does not have a view of it. There is a pretty deck overlook area that is accessible by walking through a clearing and up some steps. The clearing is overgrown. Long pants would be advisable for kids so their legs aren’t scratched by briers.
Thanks for taking the time to leave this review, Ashley! The homeowner asked us to pass along the following response: "Hello, Ashley. Again, thank you for coming to Lodge on the Lake.
As we discussed, regarding the daybed, I am so sorry, as the daybed was 'destroyed' and I had to get it out and another option placed into the cabin before you came in. I wish you would have phoned me earlier in your stay, and we would have gladly supplied a cot or another option! I have been in contact with Evolve and sent them updated photos.
As far as the photos, they are professionally done by Evolve and, of course, are wide angle to show as much as possible within the cabins. I do not believe we have stated that there is a bathtub, clearly it is only a shower. I will make certain that this is clearly stated - I am sorry for any misunderstanding!
Yes, it's true that this is an original cabin at Lodge on the Lake and is very old, but, we do our best to make certain it is very clean and provided with internet, etc. The other cabin is, indeed, brand new, and it is reflected in our pricing.
We can try to keep the walkways clear, but beach grass is actually protected in Michigan. We will maintain them.
Thank you for your feedback, as we will take all of your comments in good faith to make our property even a better value! Perhaps Sandpiper is better suited to your needs, should you wish to come back - we hope you do!" Thanks again! Best, the Evolve Team
Michigan’s Adventure family vacation
The cabin was small, but we expected that. However in the description and pictures it says there is a daybed and there isn’t. It’s more like a outdoor couch that is very small. My 11 year old didn’t fit on it like we had planned. We had to take the cushions off and wrap them in a sheet and he slept on the floor. There are bed linens for the double beds but no towels. The kitchen was well stocked has everything you need including a toaster and coffee maker. The location was great a short walk to the private beach. 15 min drive to Michigan’s Adventure and 20 mins to Grand Haven. There is a larger cabin on property but you have separate outdoor spaces and didn’t even see the other family there unless they were walking to their car.
