We spent a little over a week in a quiet, unique Spanish village house. The views were amazing from the roof terrace although we were never sure that we saw the see due to the haze. The house was arranged over four floors and suited two people staying there admirably.
Jennifer is extremely helpful and was very efficient from the word go. Margot greeted us on arrival and was very pleasant and welcoming. The house is superb and easily surpassed our expectations. The facilities are excellent and the rooms and decor exactly to our taste. The crowning glory of the roof terrace is something to behold and we could easily have spent the week sitting there drinking in the expansive panoramic views. Luckily we didn't as the village of Canillas and the surrounding area is beautiful and well worth fully exploring. Local restaurants are great and the people are very friendly. What more can I say, all good!
I would highly recommend a stay in this lovely home if you are looking for a laid back holiday amongst friendly people. It is in a perfect location for accessing some lovely walks. We loved the walk to Competa where you have a variety of restaurants and bars to visit before your return walk. Canillas is a friendly Spanish village with a handful of bars. We loved eating in La Plaza and wandering back through the cobbled streets. The house is perfect. We lived on the sun terrace and the bedroom, not needing the main kitchen or lounge due to the beautiful weather. The terrace is spacious with fabulous views and is relatively private. Loved the outside kitchen and it was all we needed. There is a public outdoor pool with sun loungers just a short walk away. (We didn't find the attendants here very helpful and hiring the sun bed was expensive in comparison to everything else around you) . The road to and from the village is mountainous with a 30 min climb. However I was reassured by the barriers in place all along the road and it was never busy.
All in all a lovely place to stay at a very reasonable price.
We had a fabulous week staying here over New Year. The house is so characterful and wondrously decorated it even induced us to be tidy! I can't imagine a more charming place to stay. It was full of useful and beautiful things, not the usual holiday cottage tat, and looked like someone lived there and loved it.
We used the wood-burning stove and (very good) cooking facilities in the ground-floor kitchen quite a lot because we did great long walks in the nearby mountains everyday and were mostly too exhausted to go out. Also we tried 2 (very nearby) places in Canillas for dinner - edible but only just - maybe it's a seasonal thing. If you don't like cooking it's worth the short and beautiful walk to Competa. We had a BBQ on the roof terrace for one evening meal, a bit chilly in Dec/Jan by the time we'd finished eating, but worth it for the view. It was warm enough to have breakfast on the terrace every morning and on the few occasions we were back in daylight, enjoyed a beer or three watching the sunset.
It's a one-up, one-up, one-up, one-up, one-down, so if you aren't happy with lots of stairs it's not for you, but we got used to it. And the house is organised with a mini-kitchen on the top floor so you don't have to carry your breakfast up 4 flights of stairs every morning.
A few walks can be done right from the house. We used permutations of the Walk! the Axarquia guidebook and went up Lucero from Fabrique de Luz, only 10 min drive, and did several other walks within similar driving distance. If you don't fancy using guidebooks but like walking the GR249 between the villages (Competa-Canillas De Albaida - Salares - Sedella) are very well marked, and from what we saw of them, very nicely routed.
Margot was also very helpful with advice about walks to do, and everything else.
