A great place to stay in Symi. You just need not to be afraid of climbing the stairs from the harbour as it is located in the high part of the town. The good thing is that you are in a quiet, residential area, far away from herds of tourists that disembark from cruise ships. The house itself is beautiful, the best place we stayed in on our trip to Dodecanese. A small yard where you can have breakfast or dinner, just outside from the kitchen. This kitchen, very well equipped. A living room nicely decorated in Greek island style. A first bedroom in the back. And a steep staircase that takes you to the second bedroom upstairs, which opens on a terrace where you also can take good time. To be noted that the wifi connection is a bit weak, and you often need to be in the yard to get the connection. In a nutshell, a great place, charming, well located, with good restaurants a few meters from the house. Lodovica was a perfect host, she came to meet us at the harbour to take us (using a taxi) up to the house. She lives just across the street in case you need any help.
We spent our holidays in Lodovica's house on july 2014: it has been one of my favorite holydays ever, so much that I'm now planning to move to Symi (which is a stunning island, quite close to Rhodes, about 1 hour ferryboat distance).
The house is unbelievably charming, tasteful and located on the top of the small island which is the best spot to be! Bedrooms, kitchen and bathrooms are fully equipped and clean (and, again, so cute that it'd be hard not to wake up in the greatest mood!). At our arrival, Lodovica, the owner, came to pick us up and brought us to the scooter rental agency, just after a refreshing glass of white wine by the harbour. She infact suggested to rent a scooter for our entire holyday before we arrived and I have to admit that it was the perfect solution to let us enjoy every single corner of Symi. Plus, as she knows tthe island very well, she gave us a lot of priceless advices like suggesting us to spend one day by a little beach (a jewel) where is possible to eat typical greek lunch surrounded by the smell of wild sage and a bunch of sweet goats..sunbeds and beach umbrellas were for free!! Well, me and my friend are still in contact with Lodovica, we are now friends and I look forward to going back there.
Let's start with the positives...the house is pleasant and in a convenient location, near to a couple of good tavernas which had good basic Greek food and friendly owners. The proximity to the tavernas and bars did mean it was quite noisy until late but we got accustomed to it and it was traditional Greek music and chatter, nothing unpleasant.
Now for the significant negative, which has caused me to rate the property as only 1 star. My husband and I required internet access whilst away and we booked this property primarily on the basis that internet access was not only advertised on this listing but was confirmed in an email from the owner. We found on arrival that the house does not have Internet access. What was worse was that the owner was very off hand and did very little to resolve the problem. She claimed that as her assistant could get access from the street outside the house, she couldn't see a problem.
From this experience, I would not feel comfortable recommending the property to anyone, as the facilities advertised may not exist and if you have any problems during your stay, the owner doesn't appear interested in resolving them.
The house, though a tad on the smallish side, is absolutely charming, and for a foursome, quite comfortable. It doesn't lack any - or nearly any - creature's comfort, bars of soap in the bathrooms included. Were one overfault-finding, perhaps a dash of air-conditioning in the bedrooms, sometimes at night, wouldn't be superflous. Furniture is new and elegant, in a quiet and understated way, that speaks highly of taste and painstaking consideration of hospitality. No flashy gadgets or artsy effects for "nouveau russians" with big boats, here. Every detail, from the colours of the walls to the fabrics of the sofas, from the bath towels to bed linen, was thoughtfully, better, lovingly chosen by the landlady, very nice and kind (on arrival we even found bottles of chilled water in the fridge!). The patio, enclosed by colourful walls and flaming bouganville, and sheltered by a great canopy from the fierceness of the sun, is ideal for a lavish breakfast, or a fresh greek salad. The little terrace, then, in the evening, after the day at the beach, caressed and lulled by small talk and a gentle breeze (but meltemi, mind you!), and sipping a drop, may be two of chilled white wine, well, could even be regarded as one of the utmost delights. All fine and dandy, then?
Now, perhaps some words could be spent about Choriò, the upper village, where the house is located.
Choriò, even though it offers fantastic sights (of Turkey as well), and has a better climate than the harbour's, though it is fairly apart from the great unwashed, who daily debark from the humongous excursion boats, and it actually is the place of restaurants for people in the know, well, is definitely "no country for old men", nor for weakish either. Choriò is within spitting distance from the sun and the moon, or so one might think whilst fighting one's way up the steep fligt of stairs - 370 or 380 steps -, which connects the village with the rest of the world.
Natives and exhausted people use also taxis - never there when needed, particularly at night -, and a sort of shuttle; one every hour - never on the dot -, crowded and smelly…, all in all, better the steps, demanding though that may be.
Ond the other hand, strong-legged (and strong-willed) individuals, while pausing for breath and looking, will command a gorgeous vista, one of the best of Greece, and perhaps will be privy to what the french poet meant - "la mer, le mer, toujours recommoncée!" - in his singing a different, but identical sea.
