A home away from home

Le Mas de Gavarron is a truly special place to rent. Unlike many rentals, you can tell that this house is loved as a home - and with that come all of the comforts you would crave on a holiday, but seldom actually get.

The pool area - with cosy adjacent en-suite bedroom for those who want to escape even more - is a mini paradise. An outside kitchen, seating and barbecue area all ensure that this is a place to while away the whole day, not just to catch a few rays.

Inside is gorgeous. Spacious, two lovely sitting rooms (salons) with open fires and all the mod cons (ie TV for the children!)... and each bedroom has its own bathroom: hugely important on a holiday with other families.

The area was a revelation too - Lorgues is a perfect market town. Fantastic restaurants, and a real sense of history, and a great market.

We did venture further out - to St Tropez, St Maxime (Aqualand serves a purpose here!), Tourtour, Salernes and to many other beautiful towns in the region.

I'd go back here in a flash!

Lying on sun loungers by an azure pool as cicadas chirruped away, the five days my wife and I spent at Le Mas with four friends in June 2014 provided us with the perfect hedonistic holiday in the Provencal heartland. Any decisions made mainly involved which of the many restaurants a short drive away we should visit next. The voluptuous market in Lorgue provided our every need for al fresco dining on the candle lit terrace, refreshed with chilled rosé from the local vineyard. The en suite bedrooms in Le Mas are superbly comfortable and its idyllic setting, surrounded by olive groves and pines, ensures peaceful nights. The large drawing room and terraces provide perfect spaces for entertaining. Even news of a looming French air traffic controllers strike and England’s dismal results in the World Cup could not diminish the wonderful time we all had. This was our second visit and we travelled by Easy Jet from Stansted to Nice. On the previous visit we caught the train from St Pancras, changing at Lille, and arriving at Draguinan, which is fifteen minutes drive from Le Mas. For a stress free and relaxing holiday, Le Mas is recommended on all counts and it is the ideal location from which to explore the many delights of Provence.

A perfect retreat

My wife and I with our 20+year old children stayed at Le Mas late September/early October 2011. We found the house perfect for our needs. We were lucky enough to experience glorious weather. The house is set amongst olive trees up a quiet tree lined track and it was blissful to be away “from it all”. The garden is beautiful and we used each of the different terraces at different times of the day according to temperature and for when we wished to avoid the younger element! We are both quite foodie and loved the way that the kitchen was set up with all the right gadgets and implements to hand. The bedrooms are charming and the water pressure for the showers was excellent – so often this is not the case in houses in France. All the videos and English stations on the tv suited the children well. We asked the maid to come and help with dinner one evening and she proved an absolute star cooking beautifully and cleaning up after us all (we were 10 that night with friends staying locally).

The house is 45 mins from St Tropez but the place we enjoyed the most was a little closer – an excellent restaurant in St Maxime from where we could use the private beach called I think the WYK. Lorgues, the local town is slightly further away than we would have liked at 4 kms (it necessitates a car trip with shopping bags) but the shops are full of beautiful stuff and the market is second to none. The area really is a step back in time and all the better for that.

We really loved this spot and you can tell that the owners have lavished care and attention here. We look forward to returning.

Relaxing holiday at le Mas

This was our second visit to le Mas. The house is spacious and comfortable, and has been planned with tout confort in mind. It is quiet, with no neighbour or traffic noise, and there is an excellent supermarket five minutes away. There are excellent restaurants (we particularly liked the Chateau de Berne, just beyond Lorgues). Should you be unfortunate enough to hit a rainy day, there is plenty of space to sit indoors, and there are big open fires in both salons. We lit a fire on our only wet day – there is little more depressing than Provence on a bad day, but a fire does help to take the pain away, and it must be wonderful in the winter.

The bedrooms are very comfortable, with attractive en suite showers (with heated towel rails) and luxurious beds and linen. On our second time, we slept in the Studio down by the pool, which was wonderful and ideal for people who might need a little seclusion.

The kitchen has a good size fridge, with extra fridge space (and an ice machine) in the outside summer kitchen, and lots of saucepans and china etc. There are several terraces and places to sit and eat, each with a different view, and the evening light over the hills is particularly attractive. It is then that the scent from the lavender and asiatic jasmine (to pick just two) becomes intoxicating.

It is an hour (roughly, I can’t remember exactly) from Nice airport, and a little less from Toulon (Ryanair). We shared with friends the second time, and they came on the TGV from St Pancras via Lille (a very simple platform change with plenty of time) and got off at Les Arcs, about fifteen minutes away.

The only minor drawback is possibly the entrance to the access road from the main road, which is not exactly beautiful, but soon forgotten after we arrived!

There are lots of villages to visit within easy reach (try Tourtour), and markets abound, particularly at Lorgues which is the second largest after St Tropez. St Tropez itself is less than an hour away by car and can be reached by boat from St Maxime if you can’t face the parking there (we can’t!).

We strongly recommend this villa to anyone.

we're very fond of Le Mas

I’ve stayed at Le Mas de Gavarron three times now. In May 2005, in July 2007 and in May 2008 – for my birthday and have become quite attached to it. We stayed in the room by the pool the last time which was truly romantic and separate from our friends who stayed in the main house. Everything was spotlessly clean and well organized and comfortable. You do need a car. We arrived by train and were met by the owner’s friend who organized a car rental for us – which was wonderful. We went in to Lorgues which is the most lovely town with a Tuesday market to die for. We bought food (delicious olives I’ll never forget) and Provençal linens which I now have on our beds here in North Carolina. And came back and cooked feasts in the well supplied kitchen and ate on the terrace watching the colors turn the hills different shades of blues and purples. On our first trip we drove easily to the coast and spent the day in St. Tropez – came home exhausted and collapsed poolside. On our second trip we took a day trip up to the pre-Alps and visiting vineyards on the way back. Subsequently we went in to Aix and also to Grasse and to Vence to see the beautiful little chapel painted by Matisse. There is so much to explore in Provençe which is easily available to this luxurious house – although it is all too tempting just to spend the day by the pool or bike to the nearest vinyard and watch the ever changing light over a bottle of excellent rosé.

Le Mas de Gavarron

We have now stayed at Le Mas de Gavarron for the last 3 years and could not recommend it more highly. Starting from the kitchen which has everything a cook could ask for and also has airconditioning. The bedrooms were extremely comfortable with plenty of hanging space. The drawing room which is a lovely big room leading off onto a very pretty terrace with lovely views.

The swimming pool is very secluded with plenty of sunloungers, and has the wonderful benefit of having a dishwasher and eating area so one does,nt have to take the plates and glasses up to the main house, all very well thought out. All in all it is an extremely lovely house to stay in.
