€40 is added to every booking to cover extra cleaning and maintenance of the apartment, you are expected to leave the apartment clean and tidy on departure in order to receive you security deposit back.
My husband and I have stayed in studio apartments in Chalet number 7 for three consecutive visits and plan to come back for more next year. Chamonix is prohibitively expensive for long term stays in the area, and we like to stay at least a week to take advantage of all the great hikes in the summer. Chalets Le Grand Balcon gives you the experience of living in your own private chalet, but the rates are profoundly more reasonable than what it costs to stay in Chamonix. However, you do not need a car to stay here. This is extremely convenient to get to Chamonix. Les Houches is only a fifteen minute bus ride away, and the #1 bus stops right outside the Chalets Le Grand Balcon, which means door to door service into the center of Chamonix.
The chalets are gorgeous, authentically and tastefully decorated in the traditional style. There is a fully equipped kitchen, although the stove is only two burners and the fridge not full sized. The bathroom is spacious and clean with elegant fixtures. Many of the balconies look directly out at Mont Blanc--a stunning backdrop! We cooked fondue and dined on the balcony every night.
The manager is very accessible, friendly, and helpful. There is no wifi, but you can't beat the price and there are plenty of internet cafes in Chamonix. We highly recommend this to travelers looking to save money but who don't want to compromise on quality.
We were looking for some accommodation for a ski trip to the Chamonix valley. On arrival we were really delighted with the apartment – really comfortable, clean, practical, and well equipped right down to the coffee maker! It exceeded our expectations and there was a wonderful, large balcony with views up the valley onto the glaciers and the Aiguille du Midi.
The location is Les Houches is excellent – nice and quiet away from the crowds and traffic of Chamonix, and yet very accessible to all of the alpine venues. It was just a two minute walk up to the Les Houches Prarion ski lift, and no problem with skis and ski boots. Another few minutes walk in the other direction and you find the cute crossroads by the Bellevue ski lift with creperie, boulangerie, brasserie, restaurants and shops. There is a bus stop just outside giving access up the valley if you come without a car. Parking is also available for those arriving with a car.
The guardian (Zoe) was very friendly and helpful with all of our queries, provided us with useful information, and made us feel very welcome. Also flexible with arrival and departure logistics to fit in with our travel schedules.
These apartments would be an ideal all-year-round venue for visitors to the valley, skiers, climbers and outdoor enthusiasts. I will certainly use the apartments for future trips. In fact, I already have!!!
PS. These self catering apartments are not to be confused with the hotel opposite with the same name. This confused me initially when I was looking for reviews.
