Where to begin to review this fabulous home? I believe we contacted the owner more than 7 months before our trip. We were looking for a charming, comfortable home in which to stay for two months while we "pretended to be French." La Boulangerie met all of our criteria: great location from which to visit all of the Loire Valley; in a town where we could walk everywhere and hopefully make friends and feel a part of the community; comfortably furnished so we could really "live" there and completely furnished with modern conveniences. This property suited us perfectly. I emailed Rachael and she responded very quickly. We discussed dates and I made our reservation. I made a payment to guarantee the reservation and then had to wait many long months to actually stay there. Rachael and I emailed back and forth many times and even formed a bit of a friendship!
The day finally arrived and we flew to Paris and then easily took the train to Saint Aignan. We then took a taxi to LaBoulangerie and was met by the House Manager, Nathalie. Nathalie is a true gem and saw to our needs and answered any and all questions that we had. She even recommended her favorite wine bar which we managed to visit most every night while we were there.
The house is gorgeous and charming and unique. It was very clean and looks exactly like the photos except that since we were there, new floors were installed in the kitchen and a shower door was installed on the shower on the 3rd floor. The kitchen has everything you could ever want to cook, make coffee, or just sit around the table enjoying people's company. It even has a dishwasher which was very nice. There were plenty of plates, cups, wine glasses, pots and pans -- everything! Very well stocked.
The location of La Boulangerie is excellent. Directly on the main square with good restaurants nearby and also a supermarket and an incredible cheese store within a very short walking distance. On Saturday mornings there is a fresh market on the square and it is literally just outside the door. We took advantage of it and shopped there every Saturday.
We did not want to rent a car while we were there and we utilized the train or bicycles for our travel. (Nathalie kindly rented us bicycles!). Generally we walked to the train station -- about a mile and 1/2 walk. You can then take the train to see all of the chateaus in the region and one is more beautiful than the next. Not to be missed!!!
The building is definitely old - but has been beautiful renovated. There are a few oddities, as you might expect for a bakery converted to a holiday home. However, these do not affect the quality of the stay.
This house is right on the square in the centre of town. Finding it on the first day is a real challenge, even though we had instructions from Rachael. Subsequently, we parked just outside the old area, and walked in. Once oriented, not a problem any more.
Being right on the square was excellent on market day - literally right outside the door is a fabulous village market, with seafood, meats, cheese, produce. Wonderful.
Being right on the square was not so great one night when the restaurant opposite (Amarena) had guests with children running around the square playing very loud games until 2 am.
The house itself is very spacious, well maintained, and provided with plenty of equipment for up to 7 people. We only had 4 in our party, and enjoyed the extra room.
Main issue in the house is the lack of curtains in the bedrooms. The top bedroom has none, while the other double has very thin curtains. In summer, this means the rooms remain very light until very late! An eye mask is definitely helpful to get some sleep.
Overall though, the house is very comfortable and is an excellent base from which to explore the region.
La Boulangerie is a gem. The apartment is spacious and nicely decorated. The owner has done an amazing job in restoring an old bakery and turning it into a warm comforting home. I would say it is one of the best rental apartments we have had: centrally located at a picturesque village, tastefully decorated with comfortable beds and sitting areas, beautiful views and a lovely kitchen. The weekend market at the square was a nice surprise, not to be missed if you want to some fresh French produce for a home-cook meal. The part we liked best is the evening strolls along the river.
My family and I thoroughly enjoyed our 6 day stay at La Boulangerie! Set in a quaint medieval village, the accommodation offered both charming details—exposed wooden beams, stonework—and tasteful modern facilities. Everything one could need is provided, and we were warmly welcomed upon arrival. The view from the upper bedroom is straight out of a fairytale (as shown in photos). Highlights of our stay included the Saturday food market in the village square (right outside the door!), visiting Amboise and the many beautiful Chateau in the area. I highly recommend this lovely spot in the Loire Valley.
We loved our stay at La Boulangerie. It has charming medieval character as well as beautiful decorating, modern bathrooms and kitchen, and comfortable bedrooms. The pictures on the website are accurate; take special notice of the view from the third floor bedroom, a once-in-a-lifetime view. The living room is very comfortable too and has a TV that carries BBC and CNN news, for those who want to catch up on what is happening elsewhere. We've stayed at a number of HomeAway properties (all excellent), and this is probably our favorite. It was spotless and Nathalie, the manager, was amusing and helpful--fun to meet. When we had to leave earlier on our day of departure, she was most accommodating.
The village itself is so interesting: the medieval buildings, the beautiful church, and the grounds of the chateau with lovely views over the countryside. Don't miss La Petrie, with its great baquettes, croissants, and pain au chocolat. We also strongly recommend L'Amarena restaurant, just steps from La Boulangerie. The owners are so friendly and welcoming, and the food is delicious, especially, in our opinion, two pasta dishes, the Sicilian and the Italienne. We're a bit embarrassed to admit it, but we ate there three nights--we couldn't stay away!
St. Aignan is perfectly situated for visits to the chateaux. The are so many to choose from, but our favorites were Cnenonceau, Villandry, Usse and Cheverny (be there at 5:00 to see them feed the hunting dogs). We also spent time in Amboise and toured Leonardo da Vinci's last home there.
Overall, it was a wonderful experience. We recommend La Boulangerie most highly and would love to stay there again.
Our stay in this property was so wonderful that at first I considered keeping it a secret - but I've raved to so many of my friends and family that the word's out! I've been holidaying in Europe regularly since 1978 and I have to concede that Christmas, 2012 in 'La Boulangerie', St Aignan, provided one of the highlights of my travel experiences.
Your first viewing of the house will make you gasp: those beams! those flagstones! the beautiful, spiral staircases! The historical aspect of the building initially promises a cosy, quirky environment, but in addition to this, it's fitted with all mod. cons: neat kitchen; dishwasher; modern bathrooms; spacious bedrooms; crisp linen; comfortable furnishings. It's a dream. And on Saturday mornings, there's a market on the doorstep, offering the finest comestibles France has to offer. The cheese! The oysters! A few doors down is your local bistro - 'Chez Constant'. Drop in there for dinner on your first night and from then on, you'll be treated like a local.
It would be perfectly feasible to spend your time in this village without a car, as there is so much to do, for those who just love to eat, drink and ramble, but if you want to go further afield, the chateaux and vineyards of the Loire Valley are easily accessible.
After holidaying here twice, I want to live in St Aignan. Correction: I made that decision after the first visit. Full marks to Rachael, the owner, whose communication and helpfulness have been second-to-none. Nathalie, the local shop-owner who will greet you on your arrival, completes the welcoming team for this spectacular holiday rental. Do yourself a favour - book this accommodation.
