We found this a well equipped, well located apartment which was ideal for our stay.
Booking and payment arrangements were straight forward. We were glad we took the offered transfer from the airport which worked well despite our flight being over an hour late arriving.
The apartment complex was quiet during our stay and it is only a short walk in to the centre of Funchal but there are many restaurants and bars even closer.
We booked trips around the island from the kiosk about 100m from the gate to the complex. They were efficient and provided an enjoyable and informative perspective.
We loved Madeira and expect to visit again. When we do we'll be seeing if the apartment is available and have no hesitation recommending to friends and relatives.
The flat was very spacious and in an ideal location, just off the main road into the centre and very quiet. Short walking distance to great restaurants, patisserie shop, tourist information, park and shopping. We stayed in first two weeks of February and had lovely warm weather every day. It was nice to sit on the sunny balcony in the mornings for breakfast with pastries brought back from the patisserie shop.
Disappointingly the furniture and bedding was shabby and worn out. Kitchen only had one pan and toaster was very dirty, but the main problem was that it had ants in all the cupboards, so any food left out was crawling within a short time. Ants were also on the dining room table, in both bathrooms and in and around the toilets, which were very dirty and there was lots of mold around bath and shower screen. Certainly not 'home from home' quality.
All these problems were reported on our return so possibly Claudio has acted on my email to him before the next occupants arrived as the flat would be ideal if these deficiencies were sorted out.
Possibly the review from Kate U who also stayed in February benefited from this.
The whole thing could hardly have worked better.
We had arranged with Claudio to have Bruno collect and return us to the airport: best to keep eyes closed in front seat at speed on those expressways. Met at the gate (a gated community) and taken up by the lift to a very nice, peaceable, well-furnished pad. All the conveniences, and in full working order. The daughter claimed the en-suite and we had the larger twin beds.
Mid-February we didn't sample the open-air pool (but nor did anyone else). The nearest we came to that was a fine toasty day on the beach at Porto Santo — but expect the outbound trip to be a bit rough.
The location is excellent, 100m or so off the Avenida do Infante, and on the town-side of the tourist hotel area: hence a couple of good restaurants (and a few more decent ones) nearby. Hence, too, the excursion buses pick up just across the Avenida.
It's a gentle amble down the hill, or through the park, to the town proper. There's a bus stop at the end of the road to avoid the none-too-exhausting climb back. Since the bus ("high-frequency" green line) drops one outside a superb patisserie, the temptation may be too much — and the morning fresh rolls too good to miss. In the other direction the service bus arrives close by the cable-car and the Zona Velha, which is stuffed with restaurants: we took a shine to O Portão. Twice we lunched by the pool area at Porto Santa Maria Hotel: pleasant enough, but watch the lizards in the planters — they can leap quite a way.
Avoiding any need for a car rental, we managed all the quarters of the island on day trips by the excursion mini-buses. The hike down the Nun's Path from the 81 bus stop at Eira do Serrano to Curral das Freiras is highly recommended by the books, but not necessarily by this geriatric. A couple of levada walks were more to my style.
We hadn't bargained for a fortnight of unbroken sun — which is just as well in February, because we had a whole two days of occasional rain.
Thanks to Claudio. It was a good time.
Well, almost. Taking off from Santa Catarina, on an Easyjet A319, with a full cargo of walk-on freight and fuel load, and a storm brewing, is closely related to a thrill-ride.
The apartment is spacious, with plenty of room for four adults to spread out. Well fitted kitchen and utility area, and spacious lounge diner. The views from the apartment are lovely, and I loved being able to see the lights on the hills twinkling at night, and in the morning watch the sun come up over the hill from my pillow.
The whole complex is beautifully maintained and the pool area is lovely. Underground parking on site was a real bonus. The apartment is in an ideal location in a quiet street, just 5/10 minutes walk from the centre of Funchal. The park and gardens opposite are lovely to wander through and it's a short walk to the harbour & marina.
We used the Pingo Doce supermarket take-away roast chicken & potatoes for a cheap meal (E8 for 4 people), but the local restaurants are lovely too and generally very good value. Our best meal was at Restaurante Dos Combatentes, our worst - and most expensive, was at one of the pavement restaurants below the cathedral. The warmest welcome was at well.com coffee bar off Ave Zarco down a little lane. Great food too and fab Mojito!
The apartment is well-stocked with a guide book, local leaflets & info (and novels if you have forgotten yours) and you can pick up a map of the island from the info centre (Ave Arriaga next to entrance to Old Blandy's wine lodge).
Madeira is a fantastic island with plenty to do in and around Funchal and across the island as a whole. The Madeirans are welcoming and friendly and we are planning to return next year. We had not appreciated how beautiful Madeira is, it is truly special and we didn't want to come home! There is so much more to explore and levadas and mountains to walk, we will definitely be back. If you are tired of beach holidays and tourist traps my advice is try Madeira!
A big and very well equipped apartment, bigger and better than the photos suggest.
Plenty of room for four adults, both bedrooms spacious and having two bathrooms a real bonus.
A short walk into the town where there are plenty of restaurants to choose from, the best restaurants are over towards the old town. There is a very good bakery at the end of the street for bread and cakes. Having a parking space underneath was easy and meant we didn't have to drive around looking for somewhere to park.
I would recommend this apartment to anyone wanting to stay in Funchal.
