Mediocre experience

My husband and I stayed at this property for 3 nights on our most recent trip to the Big Island. We chose it based on the location (convenient to the Kohala area beaches such as Hapuna and Mauna Kea) and for the affordable price. We enjoyed the location, the outdoor eating area, and the BBQ. However, the enticing low nightly cost was quickly offset by a generous "cleaning fee" assessed by the host, which totaled more than one night's stay. Second, we were disappointed to see that the apartment lacked certain necessities (bathmat, beach towels or umbrella). There is a laundry room available inside the rental, however, the restricted hours (2-6 pm) made it difficult to utilize the facilities when out during the day. Lastly, while other reviewers have commented on the cleanliness of the rental, we found it to be average with large ants present on multiple occasions (after having lived in Hawaii, we know that there are bugs...but ants are uncommon!). Also, keep in mind that this is the downstairs of a private home and it's very easy to hear people walking around/showering/etc. on the 2nd floor. Overall, this property was average.

I am happy that you enjoyed the great central location, the relaxing outdoor space, the convenient cooking arrangements and especially as you said "the enticing low nightly cost" We do offer an extremely affordable vacation option. The one time cleaning charge is not a hidden fee. It is stated in the listing and was outlined in the quote. You were aware of the amount when you paid Home Away. We have a professional, bonded cleaning service that is paid the entire cleaning fee regardless if they are cleaning a minimum 3 night stay like yours or an extended stay of a week or more. We have never received a review about a lack of cleanliness but have received several describing the unit as clean. There are beach towels in the bathroom that are laundered after each stay. I am sorry the umbrella was missing. If you had called us we could have brought you one. We don't live on the property but we do live nearby and we always try to quickly respond to a guest's request. There is another private vacation rental above Haena Hale and while you were here it was occupied by one guest. That person was staying for work purposes and she was away from the home each day. We have removed the hours of use from the complementary laundry room so that guests can schedule their day activities more easily. Hawaii is a tropical Island......there will be pests including ants even at the expensive resorts! We recommend food be tightly wrapped and in the refrigerator to help keep surfaces free of pests. Haena Hale is far more than an average vacation rental. It is a lovely, private, fully furnished, clean and affordable vacation option for your visit to Hawaii Island. We would love to be your hosts. Just what my hectic life needed! Shamhbala!

I had a week to myself so I visited my friend and her husband on the Big Island. I stayed in their lovely and comfortable one bedroom suite, Shamhbala. I was in total relax mode so my days consisted of waking up to coffee in my canapé bed with my book, an early morning swim in the ocean followed by an outdoor shower surrounded by rockery and flowers. I especially enjoyed my short drive to the ocean listening to 60's music and taking in the magnificent view. Rose and Matt directed me to the Farmer's Market and I selected healthy island greens and fruits for the week. I read and wrote during the day and took evening walks around the property while the sun was setting. Sometimes I was so awestruck by its beauty that I sat down on the grass to take it all in. My stay at Shamhbala offered me the privacy, beauty, and renewal I needed for my hectic life. I am excited to bring my husband the next time I stay at Shamhbala!

A Sweet Suite

Haena Hale is a clean, quiet and nicely decorated suite in a residential neighbourhood up in the hills of Waikoloa Village. It's centrally located to many attractions: twenty to thirty minutes away from the best beaches (Makalawena, Manini'owali, Hapuna and Mauna Kea Resort), Waimea town for their restaurants, farmer's markets and tourist attractions and a top Mauna Kea for their Stargazing program. It is also just ten minutes away from a grocery store and a couple of restaurants. I also like that is was just a little cooler in this area, a nice evening break from the heat. If you like to get away from all the tourists and have a mellow vacation then this place it what you are looking for.

nice crash pad

a great place for 2 people to stay and use as a place to sleep.i would not recomend it for 4 people , it's just to small and the futon was uncomfortable. it was extremely clean and centrally located.everyone we had contact with were very nice. it had all of the basics covered. it had no air but you will not need it with the trade winds. it did need some things, like a electric coffee pot, which we had to go and buy, the only chair in the living room was broken, and the bed sheets would not stay on the bed. hopefully they will correct these problems. other than that it was well worth the price we paid for the 3 weeks there L & S

Resposta do proprietário: The Haena Hale is not a "Crash Pad" The Haena Hale is a lovely 700 square foot private cottage apartment that is fully appointed with everything you need for a comfortable stay on Hawaii Island. Pictures and previous reviews reveal a lovely space for a budget friendly trip. The comfortable queen size bed in the separate bedroom is perfect for two adults and you can further stretch your travel budget by sharing the space with two more guests sleeping on the futon in the living area. There is a fully equipped kitchen and eating area with appliances, pots and pans, serving ware and a French Press for preparing full meals and delicious Kona coffee. We also provide an outdoor barbeque and a space for Al Fresco dining on the private lanai. In addition to providing an immaculate space, our cleaning and maintenance service report all issues that need repair or replacement after each guest departure. We are sorry this guest did not contact us about any issues while they were here. Had they done so we would have addressed them immediately. Our low nightly rate includes the Village amenities of swimming pools, tennis courts and reduced green fees at The Village Course. Our 4 night stay was nice...place is bigger than expected and nice and clean in good neighborhood

Great place to stay for a few days and use as a homebase for some activities. It was bigger than the pics appear and had everything you would need including laundry room. Nice neighborhood. Not too close to a lot to the activities or beaches but its a nice drive though. The only complaint we have is the last 2 days we were there some new people moved in to the upstairs rental and they were not very considerate. They stomped their feet at all hours of day and night and did not seem to understand that the laundry room was shared and they kept their door from the upstairs to the laundry room open all the time making it very loud and it seemed like they were in our place. Thank god they didn't have any children or it would of been much noisier..but the adults were not very conscientious of others. Overall, for the price it was a good experience and Lynette was very helpful in setting it up for us and answering any questions we had. Thank you

We are placing a sign in the laundry room that the wsher and dryer are to be shared according to the schedule and that the door is to remain closed so as not to disturb any guests. It is a good, safe neighborhood and central to the Islands attractions. While not right on the beach....the 15 to 20 minute drive to the best Kohala Beaches is a pretty straight shot down the hill. Nice Place

We enjoyed our stay. The apartment was well equipped, clean and spacious. We were well situated to visit the west coast beaches. Were given a pool pass however not given any instructions as to where the pool was located therefore could not use it.
