The neighborhood is an old one that locals there explained to us, has been in the past handful of years become a prime area for artsy/bohemian style shops and cafes. At first sight the morning after we arrived, we mistook the area for something dangerous because of the old graffiti we found here and there in the neighborhood. However after walking through and having lovely local style breakfasts, coffees in the many cozy shops, and Turkish tea on benches and stools on the sidewalks, we fell in love with the atmosphere and realized the graffiti we found here and there were of no connection to the level of safety. Unlike in the U.S. where I grew up, what you see is usually your safety level. My 17 year old son and husband and I could walk through any time of day or night, alone or together and never felt danger.
Very convenient, with fresh veggie and fruit shops, bakery, mini mart type shops, restaurants and cafes, and great walking distance to antique collectible shops! The apartment was modern fitted, and the kitchen was small, but enough for in house snacks and a simple meal if you want to dine in. I had no problem with the front load washing machine for laundry because we google translated the Turkish words on the machine. lol. If you have problems though, I assure you Tevfik will send someone right over to help! There wasn't much of a view from the master bedroom or the front sitting room, but it was not an issue. You don't want to sit at home in Istanbul anyway - most of our time was spent walking Istiklal street which is ten minutes away by foot, (easiest path is to turn up hill to the right side upon stepping out of the apartment building). Istiklal st. is full of eateries, shops, people. Every night we passed by young Turkish men and women doing an impromptu Turkish 'circle dance' which was so lovely to watch and clap to! Galata Tower and it's neighborhood is also at the bottom end of Istiklal street - a must visit area. Everything is in walking distance, and easy if you pace yourself and plan your day. We only used a taxi or the tram when we wanted to visit a further district too far to walk.
The apartment is in a great location to go out, walk, eat, sight see, then go back for a short rest in the apartment, then head on out again late afternoon. You aren't STUCK in a big hotel far away from the action or forced to stay out all day until you head back to a big hotel - that is the plus side of staying at this apartment area.
