The location is wonderful if you want to be near Wellfleet center, beaches, hiking trails, great food and some local wine. The nearby trails were great for taking the dogs on their morning walks. The kitchen is stocked with any pot, pan, measuring cup or knife you will need. All the mattresses were in wicked good condition and many of the pillows appeared new. There is nothing worse than finding one of the beds in your vacation rental has a human shaped dent in it. That was not an issue here. The house is old but is obviously very well cared for by Suzette and her family. Suzette also provided a list of all the local attractions and had all the beach locations listed on the fridge along with menus, maps and cape magazines in the living room. My family tends to vacation on the cape once every two or three years and we will definitely look to stay here again if it is still on the rental market. Great house and great landlord.
My family and I spent a delightful week earlier this summer at Suzette's lovely place, which we shared with our friends and their kids - in all, 3 adults, 4 kids aged 7 to 10, and 1 very happy dog. As others have written: we feel we've found the place we'll always want to return to whenever we visit the Cape in years to come - as long as she's still willing to share it!
We know the area reasonably well, since my mom and uncle live nearby in Orleans - Wellfleet is our favorite place to be, and this house is ideally located: it's easy to reach, literally steps away from Route 6, and yet once you head down the long unpaved drive, you're in a private retreat surrounded by trees and grass - more meadow than lawn. From this central but peaceful spot, you're an easy drive to Wellfleet town and harbor, Truro and Provincetown - but you can just as easily spend your whole week exploring the Outer Cape's kettle ponds and beautiful beaches, both bay and oceanside, via quiet back roads, with hardly any need to ever get onto Route 6.
The house itself is both cozy and spacious - one room follows another as typical of an early 1800s farmhouse, each filled with family memorabilia, antiques and beachhouse trinkets, and there are two staircases, which delighted the kids, who explored every corner and played fantastic games of hide and seek both inside and out, running out one screen door and then around the house to enter through another. All the while we parents relaxed on the very spacious deck or in the hammock in the yard - we all enjoyed the breezy, barefoot life - including the dog, who like the kids had plenty of room to run around and play.
The house is very comfortable - but if you're looking for chic or modern, this isn't for you. Everything you might need is there - washer/dryer, microwave, full kitchen and supplies, and then some - but it's friendly rather than fancy: a lovely claw-foot tub, or a wonderful outdoor shower for bathing; the dining table where Suzette ate as a little girl herself; old wooden floorboards; and quirky artwork and mementos - these all are what make the house a charming home.
Suzette has clearly put a lot of love - and elbow grease - into maintaining this special place, and cares just as much about her guests; she was eager to share advice about favorite places to find fresh seafood, see a beautiful sunset, or take a dip in the pond, and was friendly and responsive when we had any questions. Can't wait to go back!
The house is in the perfect location for visitors of the outer cape. The Sunday to Sunday stay is the best way to beat the Saturday traffic. The ability to travel with our dog was greatly appreciated. We had the most memorable week and enjoyed the beautiful seashore. We saw breathtaking sunset at Duck Harbor, had bonfire on White Crest under a full moon, fished for bluefish and tons of squid, feasted on the most incredible oysters and clams, and the kids had a blast in the kids room upstairs. We felt the love and blessing of a home.
We stayed at Suzette’s farmhouse the week of 4th of July this year, and I’m
so glad we pulled the trigger on this property vs. any of the others I
researched on the Cape. It’s perfect for getting a large group altogether
while not having to worry about neighbors or making too much noise. – It’s
beautifully nestled back in the woods, off the main street, so there’s
ultimate privacy for your morning outdoor shower (SUPER COOL) and hanging
late night with no worries!
As for the house, it’s like stepping back in time, with funky knick knacks,
a unique lay out, old marriage certificates, dated wallpaper, and so much
more... We rented this house as a means to get old college friends back
together, and every person had nothing but compliments. Each person made a
point to go through every room and take in the history! – The house is
*There’s a gas station about 1-2 minutes (literally) walk from the house
which sells beer/wine & food so no concerns for running low in a pinch
*Bus stop right at the gas station – We took this to PTown and it was a
breeze. Bit of a drive, but was great people watching
*3 miles back roads to Beachcomber – An absolute MUST. If you haven’t been
here, do yourself a good-service and stop in, and early, as it fills up
fast! - This was a huge deciding factor for us
*0.1 mile off of Rt. 6, so easy to access all the wonderful things
Wellfleet has to offer
*A few mins to the bike trail
*Fire pit, hammock under some shade, and charcoal grill for hanging out on
the large porch
At first I was nervous about writing this review as to not tip too many
people off to it (jk, sort of….)! It’s really a steal and the price is
right. Big time bang for buck, but be advised this is not the Ritz. It was
built in 1810… I think this goes without saying
I’ve already surveyed my entire group, and we’re all locked in for an
encore next year in 2016. If you are considering Suzette’s property for any
time of year, don’t hesitate. Actually, stop thinking about it and see if
it’s available already!
Catch you at the Beachcomber! :)
Just back from 2 blissful weeks staying at this lovely home. This is a spot of heaven for those who appreciate a funky old family farmhouse by the sea.. It's is as warm as the owner..Suzette.. I already miss my morning bath in the claw foot tub by the open window.. Thank you for sharing your family home with ours..we left with heavy hearts..but happy knowing we will be back! xxx
Charmingly beautiful old house. Our favorite things about this house were the location, the outdoor shower and the nice deck!
The kitchen has everything a cook wants. Great for a dog with the expansive and naturally fenced in yard.
We have been going to Wellfleet for years and have been looking for a place to rent year after year and it seems that we found it!
