Existence of such a heavenly and natural abode in such close proximity to the hullabaloo of NY made us realize the urban evocation of a farmhouse can be so enriching. This was much needed and we enjoyed our stay for each moment it was worth. The service rendered to customers was fabulous and the dining experience unique, needless to say. What counted and really moved us was the staff camaraderie and the way they took care of minute details to make our stay comfortable and extra efforts to make us feel at home. The tiny tots also enjoyed to their heart’s content and we would rate this stay one of the finest and coziest undertaken so far making Summer of 2012 very memorable. We haven't had enough and we are all hoping we derive yet another opportunity to visit Palmyra during the fall.
This farm in the Poconos near Lake Wallenpaupack provided the perfect spot for our family reunion. The kids were entertained with the lake, boats, fishing, swimming, games, and farm animals close by so the adults could find time to sit and talk or exercise. A projector was available so that we could watch family videos on a large screen. Had it rained during the week, there was plenty to do in the game room, including games, ping pong, shuffleboard, piano, etc. (we also brought crafts and some other games too.)
The rooms were a bit tight, and the farmhouse is old. If you're expecting a five star hotel room, this is not the place for you. However, the food really was five star. Each meal was multi-course and higher quality than most restaurants. And the service was five star. The Crouthamels are fun and attentive.
Each night we were allowed to make a fire in the fire pit by the lake if we wanted to. Seating is plentiful for the entire family by the fire pit. We had some wonderful gatherings down there. We brought our bikes and enjoyed biking around the farm and at the Promised Land State Park nearby. Runners in the family jogged up the long driveway and on the road.
Our reunion included field trips to Mark's Ice Works and the Scranton Coal Mine Tour. Scranton itself is very interesting to drive through--wonderful architecture. Mark and Mary provided lunch in large coolers for the entire family when we went to Scranton.
The farm animals were fun--the horses were friendly and wandered freely through the yard. The kids were allowed to brush them and pet them whenever they wanted. A few chickens also were free ranging and the kids could catch them. We found salamanders in the woods with the help of the Crouthamel's son.
For sports enthusiasts, there was tennis, basketball, and volleyball.
If I could give more than five stars to Mark, Mary, and their family and staff, I would. This was a fun, restful, magical reunion. We relaxed while our food was cooked, beds made, bathrooms cleaned each day, dishes done, new towels provided. I'm sure they worked hard, but were always smiling and helpful!
Just a couple of notes: If you go, you need to bring your own pool towels. It would be a great idea to also bring extra fishing rods so each kid had one . . . or buy more there in the local shop. I scheduled the coal mine tour in advance for a large group.
