Property was just perfect! A great outdoor space that is completely private and has a Hawaiian cozy feel. Inside was just as charming. My family felt at home on vacation. Looking forward to staying here again
We hit the jackpot with this rental. From the moment we opened the front gates we felt welcome and safe at our luxurious oasis. There were fresh cut flowers on the table, a welcome guide with restaurant and tourist attractions, and even a binder with manuals to everything in the house. The home is full of character with wood built-ins, architectural detail, plants and island decor. The kitchen was well equipped with all of our cooking needs (including spices) as we cooked in a couple of nights during our week's stay. Our group had 5 adults and 1 toddler and there was more than adequate space. We loved the outdoor living as there are 3 outdoor dining/relaxing areas, Weber Grill, a Jacuzzi, waterfall, a sun deck and even and even an outdoor shower. The house had lots of sunlight thanks to the abundance of windows and sliding doors which lead to a beautifully landscaped yard which was private. The owners provided a pack in play, umbrella stroller, 2 bikes, kayaks, beach blankets, 4 beach chairs, 2 beach umbrellas, 2 Boogie boards, and even board games for indoor fun. We saved lots of space in our suitcase because this house came with everything including a washer and dryer. The beds were comfy, the layout of the house was perfect, and all of the details from labels throughout to bathroom hooks were well situated. We are not readers, but there was quite the collection of books and local guides on the bookshelves. The location is PRIME as Lanikai beach and pillbox hike and lookout are only a couple minutes on foot and shops, restaurants, and grocery stores are accessible via bikes or about a 5 minute drive away. Our local favorites were Buzz's steak house (best ribs we've ever had) Island snow Hawaiian shaved ice and Maui Taco. Unfortunately we had to access the Emergency Room at a local hospital and it was just over 2 miles away. The location of this home could not be better. We were able to drive into Honolulu to visit Waikiki, Pearl Harbor, spent a trip on the North Shore, visited Diamond Head and all were just over 30 minutes away. So glad we opted to stay outside of the city for our stay. There is no comparison to the natural landscape and culture in Kailua. The owners were great to work with and prompt on emails for the months leading up to our travels to Kailua. Real genuine folks who want you to enjoy their home as much as they do. You can tell that this house is loved and is a rental that we plan to return to time after time.
Our Family took a 4 month Sabbatical with our Kids - 4 Boys 13,11,7 and 1. We wanted a family adventure and choose this house because of it's location and layout for doing homeschool. We had a fantastic experience with the house, location and the owners. I highly recommend the place. Now to the details.
Living space: With 4 boys we found the house surprisingly livable. Two boys were in the back bedroom, one in the 2nd bedroom and a portable crib was setup in the master bedroom. AC in the bedrooms was very nice. Part of the reason we picked the house was because of all the table spaces and separate outdoor spaces. Our kids had lots of room to spread out for school. We particularly loved the bar where we ate morning breakfasts together with the cool indoor / outdoor seats. Everyone enjoyed outdoor showers, we loved the patio to talk and play guitar and everyone we had over commented on the quaint old Hawaii feel and decor.
Beaches / Area: Lanikai Beach is just awesome. The sand is incredible, the color of the water is so blue and it's just a great place for walks, paddling, swimming and snorkling. We SUP'd and Kayak to the Mokes regularly. I enjoyed mornings on the beach and busy scene of afternoon rowing clubs. We walked for hour every morning to coffee and felt the property was secure enough to leave the 3 older kids. After a month our kids started to want more waves and action then Lanikai provided - so we would drive to Kalama beach or Bellows on the weekend. Those beaches are good for boogy boarding of all ages. I got super into surfing and unfortunately in the late spring and summer I was driving a lot to South shore for good waves. Fall and Winter are better for surfing off the Mokes, Kalamas or Castles.
Hosts: I have nothing but positive commends about Michelle and her husband. They were so helpful throughout our stay and we're super responsive. The blender and toaster broke during our stay and they worked with us to get quick replacements. On several occasions we had to work through maintenance issues with broken sprinklers and a cracked sink (oops). They were gracious and worked with us and the whole experience was super smooth. The host also had purchased a few things for us which was super nice. We notice new games, the towels seemed new, and they had just acquired a double kayak which I mentioned on one occasion prior to our visit. Bottomline - you'll be well served by the hosts.
This property is clean, private, close to the beach, and has everything you need. We stayed at the house with our 2 children (ages 16 and 10.5), and everyone had plenty of space to spread out. There are several outdoor seating areas, as well as a den and living room indoors. We did a lot of cooking at the house, and found the kitchen to be nice and big, and really well stocked with pots/pans/dishes and utensils. The grill was quite nice too.
The front of the home is fully gated and has large shrubs so that the street noise is minimized, and passers-by cannot see in. The back of the property is also very private since the house is built right on the hill/mountain. During the day with the windows and doors open, the house temperature was very comfortable. However, we did run the AC at night, which was a real treat since many homes in the area do not have AC.
The beautiful beach is a quick walk down the street. There are reef filled with fish and turtles, so be sure and bring your snorkeling equipment. The house has towels and chairs for renters to use. There is also a nice (but challenging) hike up the mountain from the house to the pill boxes. We did this a few times, and I highly recommend it. The views of the beach are amazing.
The owner was very helpful and responsive whenever we had questions. She recommended a few places to eat and shop, which were all very good and close by. We loved staying at this vacation home, and can't wait to return again soon. I would definitely recommend this property to anyone considering visiting Lanikai. It really is a must see.
