Outside light for the stairs didn't work, light for downstairs/laundryroom didn't work, outside chair and swing were covered in cobwebs and the front door didn't have a curtain over it so it was open for anyone to see it plus you had to slam the door in order to close it. The lady working at the main gate was beyond rude. When we were checking out and trying to find out where we needed to throw our garbage away at she acted like we were wasting her time...while driving down the road to the dump site we noticed bags of garbage on the side of the road which was probably due to people getting frustrated from dealing with her because it was confusing where you needed to go.
Fantastic view with the leaves just now starting to change colors. And over thru the trees you have a view of the lake. The cabin was smelled and felt freshly cleaned. Loved setting a fire in the wood burner to keep warm at night while resting and enjoying a nice relaxing and peaceful evening.
We've stayed in various Big Canoe Treetoppers over the years, so knew going in what to expect. This property, however, just seems neglected and not very clean. To start, we found dirty socks wedged in the couch cushions and half-empty water bottles sitting on tables. Each room/area had at least one light bulb burned out, and the oven looks to be have been from the 1970's. The worst part though was that the second bathroom smelled of urine, no doubt due to the fact that the bathrooms are carpeted - not a good idea in your own home, much less in one that sees multiple guests. Because of the carpet, it's hard to imagine how much those bathrooms are really cleaned after each rental. The beds were saggy and linen was very old. There was also a very limited selection of kitchen/dining equipment, so don't expect to be able to cook and eat in much.
On the plus side, the HVAC and water pressure were good.
We love Big Canoe, but would definitely not rent this property again.
My wife and I had a very pleasant weekend stay there to get away from work and the hustle and bustle from everyday life. The place was well kept and cozy. The master bedroom has a very comfy bed and both a sit down bath and a shower. There is also a room with 2 bunk beds that we had no need for but found some fun games and made use of the extra pillows. The view is beautiful with an over view of the mountains and the lake. We spent every night sitting out on the porch which hangs over the hill that the cabin sits on. Lots of fun trails around in walking distance that have waterfalls and old cabins from the 1800's that you can walk through. Definitely recommend this place for a romantic get away or for the family.
This was the worst experience we have ever had with a Home Away property. We arrived at the property and, OK, the pictures looked better than the unit did in person. This thing jumped right out of the 70"s with its very dated decor right down to the green carpet that had to be from the 70's. It was buckled in a number of places. The kitchen had not had a refresh since the pioneer days. A push button stove, again from the 70's. The mattresses were so bad on the beds that none of us slept well and were in pain every morning. The rental agent did absolutely nothing to help us resolve issues. We had a storm on the second night of our stay and the satellite or cable went out. We had no television at all and when we called him and told him that the unit across the street from us had television the next day, he offered no help and made no service calls on our behalf. Half the overhead can lights were out in the living/dining area and both bedrooms. We told him and he said there were bulbs in the kitchen drawer. We tried to replace several and they didn't work. We called and told him and he offered no help at all. This guy gets paid for doing absolutely nothing. If you rent this unit, it will be the most expensive and miserable experience of your lives. The owners and rental agency should be ashamed to have this THING on the market.
This place could use an overhaul, but the bed was comfortable. If you have small children, this place could be dangerous. The stairs on the porch are steep, and the round staircase has bars big enough for my large headed one year old to get through. If you rent this place, a few pointers
-if you have small children, bring a baby gate for the porch and a playpen to go around the stairs inside.
-take the red dish basket and rubber bottoms out of the kitchen sink (they were pretty gross when we were there).
-be super careful with the hot water. It gets hot enough to cause serious damage to skin!
There is tons of fun for kiddos at Big Canoe. Sunscreen and bug spray is a MUST!
