Mahalo Nui Loa,
We loved our stay at Charles Cope's cottage (Hotel Pa'amalu) - beautiful location and very peaceful. It was hard for us to leave after our 2-night stay. Charles greeted us on our first night and shared a few special places to visit as well as local restaurants. The cottage was very clean and comfortable and perfect for us (we were trying to avoid the condo option) and had everything we needed, including beach gear (snorkeling, etc.) Our favorite spot to relax at the cottage was the lanai, which overlooked a water fountain, attracting so many colorful birds throughout the day. The beaches nearby are beautiful and great for snorkeling. The cottage is located in the heart of Kona coffee country as well as quite close to the Place of Refuge (Pu'uhonua) - a must visit for learning about Hawaii's history and traditions. We would enthusiastically recommend the cottage to our friends and family (which we did!).
Spacious, clean, quiet, conveniently located.
I picked this place because of its close proximity to the Captain Cook monument and the City of Refuge - excellent snorkeling at both spots. If you look for more adventure, you can use Manini beach as a launching point to swim to the monument. I'm not advising it, but it can be done.
What liked about this cottage, was that it was closely located to everything: Airport, grocery store, snorkeling. And yet, if you stay in for a day, you never hear much noise. All you'll hear is the wind, the birds, and the water fountain - very calm and natural sounds, perfect for relaxing.
We were warmly welcomed to the lush landscape and thoughtfully considered guest house. The home was clean and very comfortable with enough space for two to enjoy the kitchen, bedroom and screened-in lanai. Charles brought us a ripe mango from his fruit tree and gave us a tour of his garden, lush with orchids, plumeria, vanilla, and coconuts. Beauty of this region in Hawaii is stunnining, especially if you're called to snorkel or scuba close by.
We had a wonderful time @ Close But Far, which was clean, modestly and sweetly appointed, and in an excellent location for exploring the Bay. The owner, Charles, was super friendly and helpful; and we were highly entertained by Scooby and Rat Cat. The home is perfect for a single traveler or couple, but with an airbed added to the lanai, worked great for us and our offspring. We live on the island and found this spot to be a perfect Big I getaway. We felt right at home at Close But Far and hope to be back. Thank you, Charles!
Nice quiet location. Very close to Captain Cook, Two Steps, and Pu'uhonua o Honaunau National Historical Park. Kind owner with nice garden with many fruit trees and well kept property. Nice neighbors and very peaceful setting. The direction he gave us was on the point and the place was easy to find. The drive from airport was fun.
