Mini-paradise in Puna!

We absolutely loved our stay at Kai Malolo! The house has everything you need for a week of fun, and served as the perfect home base for our very busy week on the east side of the island. The pool was amazing...our kids (12 and 10) enjoyed swimming in it each morning and when we returned from a day's worth of activities.

Bicycles, snorkel gear, pool toys, coolers, towels/beach bags...you name it, they provided it. We especially loved the deck with a view of the ocean and beautifully landscaped yard. Sunrises are spectacular from this location...even better after a very short walk down the lava rock path to the ocean front (complete with its own arch -- great photos!).

We loved this location to tour the entire east side (from Waipiʻo Valley to Ka Lae, aka "South Point" and Volcano National Park) of the island.

The house itself is very comfortable and the main great room has high ceilings with a great view. The master bedroom/bathroom was very comfortable and we slept every night to the sounds of the sea and the nightly rain. Peaceful and calming. The kitchen had everything we could want/use, and the gas grill came in handy when we stayed in. We found the nearby Mermaid Ponds one morning and snorkeled and loved driving down "red road" through the scenic tree forest on our way to Kalapana to rent bikes to ride to see the lava flowing at night.

The house is not far from Pahoa where there is a local grocery store, Lord's Drugs (they accept CVS cards for discounts), and two excellent restaurants -- Kaleo's (lunch and dinner) and the Tin Roof bakery (serves both breakfast and lunch, and a Saturday night dinner once a month with live music -- catch it if you can).

Kai Malolo is about an hour from Volcano National Park and the drive can be done easily -- we spent two days at the park, returning home each night with no issue.

A longer day trip was to South Point, the black and green sand beaches -- well worth the drive, although food choices were somewhat limited at night, it was more about the experiences then the food that day (cliff jumping at South Point, turtles at the black sand beach, and 4-wheeling in our jeep rental to get to Green Sands).

Terry was very responsive to one small issue (the tube to the water fountain in the pool split) and was fixed the next day while we were out and about sightseeing).

In summary, Kai Malolo is an excellent vacation home whether you plan to tour the area or just relax!

Perfect Oasis on the quiet side of the Island!!

The house was amazing! The Lanai, living/kitchen/dining, and all had great views of the ocean. We spent most of our time at the house in the pool, perfect hangout size and way to cool off. The kitchen is fully equipped and we used the BBQ 2 nights for dinner. Close to Pohao town with groceries and a good selection of restaurants considering the small size. Great fish and chips by grocery store and we grabbed a sweet hunk of Ahi to BBQ also. On the main road in town we ate at Kaleos' more than once, great food and some cute shops. Had fun at Uncle Roberts Wed night market at end of Red road with music and lots of food and drinks for great prices. The house would be a great central location for heading out to tidal pools and off to Volcano tours, but we loved hanging out there so much we spent the bulk of our time at house. Frogs are a bit loud at night but that and the ocean added to the remote experience. We hope to make this home a regular place to come. Thanks Terry!!

Paradise

We had the best vacation at this home. The house has absolutely everything you need. The pool was warm. We enjoyed sitting out on the lava rock ocean front. The view was breathtaking. Driving around the area was also breathtaking. We loved Pahoa town and the Tin Shack bakery. We shall return.

Superb isolated property.

This was our second stay at Kai Malolo in 3 years, the reason we returned was simple, Kai Malolo is stunning. Terry (the property manager) is a pleasure to deal with and strives to ensure your stay will be perfect.

Kai Malolo is off the beaten track, although the road to the property has been improved since our last stay, it helps keeps unnecessary traffic down, so you can enjoy the peace and quiet. Broken only by the sound of the waves crashing against the cliffs, the coqui frogs at night or Rags one of the very friendly dogs from the adjoining property who does get a bit vocal sometimes (so ear plugs could be a thought if you're a light sleeper!).

The photographs do the property justice and are a true reflection of this very well appointed home. We stayed in March this year and the pool was warm enough to enjoy for a few hours in the afternoon before the sun went down.

As this property is off grid you are reliant on solar power backed up by a generator when needed, but this isn’t a problem and we never had any power issues, even on cloudy days. Internet is also pretty good so although you may feel away from it all you're not totally isolated from the real world.

We had a few glimpses of whales from the lanai in the early evening and from the cliff tops we also spotted some turtles in the surf.

There is a vacant cleared lot next door which has been that way ever since we first came here, hopefully it won't be built upon soon as this property is perfect as it currently is.

We will definitely be returning sometime soon.

Another Great Stay at Kai Malolo!

My husband and I just returned from our second stay at Kai Malolo. As I expected, it was just as amazing as our first stay. The home is beautiful and had every amenity we needed, the views are incredible, and the location is exactly what we wanted (non-touristy, right by the water, but a quick drive from a grocery store). We loved our time here and I expect that we'll be back for a third stay soon!

Beautiful But Isolated Rental

We enjoyed this rental very much. The home is relatively new, in good condition, and comes with lots of toys, including 4 mountain bikes. It is well appointed and the solar+generator electrical system worked flawlessly. There were plenty of basic supplies and the kitchen was well equipped. Everything was clean and well cared-for. The most unusual feature of this rental is its isolation. The nearest market and restaurant is in the very funky small town of Pahoa, about 20-30 minutes away by car. The property is right on the coast, with only one other house visible. It is perfectly quiet, except for surf hitting the rocks and the occasional barking dog next door. The view of the surf and spray over the rocks is appealing, but when the surf was high the windows of the house quickly became covered with salt.

Most of the time the sea is calm, so the salt issue on the windows is not normally a factor. Yes the home is secluded, but that is the beauty of it, old Hawaii feel, magnificent location, yet. a full amenities, immaculate and spectacular.
