I was going to live in New York for six weeks and this house was just what I was looking for: cozy, full of light, comfortable. The living-room overlooks the Riverside Park and the Hudson river. Broadway is very close and it is full of every kind of shops, markets and restaurants. Also a Subway station is very near and you can reach Central Park by feet in fifteen minutes.
Now I’m back in Italy, but I miss New York and Judith Nelson’s house.
When I arranged to rent Judy’s apartment on Riverside Drive for a few days in October 2011, I never imagined I would find such a large, spacious, luxurious and beautifully decorated New York apartment. When I entered, it was like finding myself in a different time: A drawing room with windows looking onto Riverside Drive and the park; next to it a music room, a dining room, a large kitchen, and all in all, too many rooms to count. Every room is comfortably furnished, and moreover is tastefully decorated with Tom’s paintings and other interesting art. I felt elevated to a higher rank in this apartment, and I would love to live here.
The neighborhood is, in my opinion, the nicest in Manhattan – Riverside Drive and the Riverside park. A block away on Broadway are cafés, restaurants, grocery stores, and you are five blocks from Columbia University. You can get downtown in 10 to 20 minutes via the subway (on Broadway) or the 5th Avenue bus, which stops opposite the house on Riverside Drive.

We spent 5 nights at this lovely and spacious apartment. The views are terrific -- looks out on the Hudson River and Riverside Park -- beautiful views any season. One block from the subway, street parking easy, terrific restaurants for any palate. Easy access to Times Square, Lincoln Center, the theater district -- and as close to the Barnard/Columbia campus as you can get and not be in a dorm. Owner has done beautiful renovation -- bathrooms (yes , 2!), kitchen and woodwork/floors. AND the owner is delightful! Add to all this a baby grand piano in its own music room, living room, dining room, and two generous bedrooms. And the owner left the new Tina Fey book out for me to read! Cannot beat it!
We were visiting NY, from the UK, for the first time as a family (two adults, two teenagers) and we did not want to be tied to a hotel in the middle of the really manic tourist areas, so we were looking for alternatives. In addition, two double bedrooms can start getting somewhat pricey!
The apartment is around a 15/20 minute subway ride from the heart of Times Square/42nd Street, located at Morningside Heights. This was a blessing since this short journey enabled us to be a little more relaxed. It is very close to the campus of Columbia University and all the locals were extremely kind and friendly to us tourists.
We found several good restaurants close by, all of which seemed represent decent value for money (those familiar with the restaurant made famous in Seinfeld will note that Toms Restaurant is virtually outside the front door of the building- google it!). Several supermarkets, delis and coffee shops allowed us to be able to plan our days out at our leisure.
The property itself was exactly as described, well maintained, spacious and clean. Judy could not have been more helpful and accommodating and was very easy to deal with. All our arrangements with her went smoothly and to plan.
We would have no hesitation in recommending this as a base for anyone looking to enjoy the delights of New York City, who may also what some "chill time" also..
