Everything was great, but for the fact that there was no wifi. We ended up going into town, but it would have been nice to check email or watch a movie late at night.
Unfortunately, I felt it was too chilly to take advantage of the outdoor shower. Feeding the piglets was a lot of fun!
The listing description and photographs accurately portrayed the home and property. The moment we arrived we fell in love with the home and property. We were seeking a vacation location away from the tourist centers on the island, where we could simply unwind and relax--- this place more than lived up to our expectations! Being off the "grid" brought a level of simplicity that we were seeking for our vacation. A chorus of tropical birds gently awake you each morning. It was fun to go outside in the field next to the house and star gaze given the intense dark night sky. We arrived to a clean, well kept home. The onsite housekeeper is friendly and made us feel welcomed and special during our four week stay. Both the housekeeper and owner were available via cell phone and/or texting and the housekeeper in person, which worked quite well for us. Upon our initial inquiry, the owner had responded to our email very quickly. We enjoyed reading out on the front porch drinking freshly made coffee. Hawi offers many small shops and restaurants and we found the local folks quite friendly. A visit to the Saturday Farmer's market is a must--- that is where we did our weekly grocery shopping for fruits and vegetables! Places we ate out at (and enjoyed all of them) were- the Sweet Potato Kitchen and Take Out, Kahola Village Inn and the Kahola Coffee Mill. Kohala Burger & Taco located in Kawaihae (20 miles south of Hawi) is a great restaurant too! The Takata grocery store located a couple miles north of Hawi provided a nearby place to buy necessary food and non-food items. Pololu Valley at the end of highway 270 is a must hike (about 9 miles north of Hawi). Beaches that we frequented more than once were- Spencer, Hupuna, Beach 69 and Mauna Kea, which are all within 30 minutes south of Hawi. We did a whale watch tour with Ocean Adventures located in Kawaihae that was awesome. Lapakahi State Historical Park (6 miles south of Hawi) is well worth it--- great cultural history, plus a great views of the ocean. We stumbled into a hidden gem of a cliff beach with public access via the road to the Hawaii Island Retreat located north of Hawi on highway 270. Don't let the location of Hawi (northern tip) scare you... the road is good and we often made daily trips towards Hilo or Kailua (and even beyond). If your looking for solitude, away from the main tourist centers we would highly recommend this wonderful home for your next visit to the Big Island.
Andrea's Home is a dream getaway. It is serene, peaceful and quiet, ideally suited for a complete retreat. The home is well built, nicely appointed and very comfortable to live in. The solar power system affords a sense of "being away" and is very easy to manage. The location is great, offering complete privacy while only a mile from Hawi. Organic produce is available from neighboring farms and the Saturday Farmer's Market is an easy 20 minute walk. Andrea was very helpful and easy to work with. This is definitely a retreat we shall return to again and again in the future.
The photos and description really undersell the beauty of this property. This was one of the most peaceful places, and off-road to boot. If you're not a huge energy consumer, Andrea's house is perfect.
Andrea was very helpful and communicative, even though she wasn't around. We were able to relax in solitude, and there was a noticeable lack of sound and light pollution. We spent a lot of time reading and star gazing. It was the picture of tranquility.
My husband and I enjoyed our stay at Andrea's house. It is in a rural setting and solar powered. It is rustic and has an outdoor shower, which we both thoroughly enjoyed. We liked the area, only about 15 - 20 minutes from excellent swimming and snorkeling. It is close to Hawi. It was very relaxing and quiet. Andrea quickly responded to any questions and concerns. She was very easy to communicate with. It was cleaned and well maintained.
We've spent a very good time in Andreas' house, it's beautiful, clean, confortable, surrounded by nature but close to Hawi (by car). We definitly love this place, the spirit of every little detail, and the outside shower!
We did not meet Andrea but she was very responsive to emails and text messages and her caretakers were nice and helpful. A very very good experience, full of good vibes! Thank you so much Andrea for sharing your house!
