At Casa Gray, the house itself is an older building with older plumbing, older decor, and minor wear and tear that you might expect for a house of its age in a humid, sandy, salty location. But let's talk about that location - the house is Right.On.The.Beach. 30 feet from the back door, and you're in the waves. Very quiet, very peaceful, private (thanks to the groomed mangroves), and we felt totally safe. You basically have a little stretch of beach all to yourselves, plus a pool right out the back door, which is unheated and cooler than the ocean water, but refreshing on hot days. It's a basic, simple beach house, but it's very clean, virtually pest-free (which is hard to do in that climate and that close to the water), and you have a housekeeper and groundskeeper that come every day except Sundays. Marisol will sweep, mop, make beds, and wash dishes daily. Jose sweeps the outdoor porch area and clears your beach of seaweed daily. Jose cooked a large delicious meal for us one night - fajitas, beans, rice - and we had leftovers for days. There is a foot wash by the back door, plus outdoor shower spout and hose for cleaning off sand. The air conditioning units in all the bedrooms seem brand new and work really well. The rest of the house doesn't have AC, but if you open all the windows, you get an awesome breeze throughout. The kitchen appliances seem new, though the gas oven doesn't cook hot enough. We found the outdoor BBQ to be unusable; if it was replaced, that outdoor bartop would be awesome. Beach furniture is in good condition, though it looks like there was a hammock that broke and hadn't been replaced. There are safes in every bedroom. Bottom line: I can only give it 4 stars, because of the few minor things we wished were in better condition. If you're looking for absolute luxury, this isn't it. But with a few upgrades - new windows and sliding doors, new outdoor bbq, guest access to laundry, better overall linens and towels - this place would be absolutely STELLAR for a simple, quiet beach retreat vacation.
Casa Gray is a fantastic place on the best beach in Akumal. After wonderful snorkeling right in front of the house, relax in the pool or in the hammock under the palm trees. Stroll on over to the beach bar, two doors down, for a margarita or cold drink and some fish tacos. I have stayed there four times with no complaints, but now after the recent renovations, including new air conditioners in the bedrooms, water pressure increase, new patio furniture, and new paint, it is now truly heaven on Earth. I would highly recommend this property for your next getaway.
We knew the casa was a bit rustic before arrival but it really needs some TLC and is not very well maintained. The beach and ocean in front of the casa is beautiful. A pool has recently been added but the the water was so cloudy you couldn't see your feet and only got worse as the week went on. The caretaker only swept it once during our stay, i don't believe he quite knows how to care for it. He and the maid only showed up 5 of the 7 days, most days we only saw him for 1-2 hours. Several of the beach loungers were broken. Of the 3 bedrooms the a/c only worked in 1, the other 2 sounded like a jet plane all night and never cooled the room down. Again we knew it was rustic but after seeing the inside of some of the other condos and houses in Aventuras Akumal we realized this casa is overpriced for what you get.
First, off, my wife's family is from Mérida, Yucatán, so going to the Riviera Maya is not really an adventure, any more than is visiting our Colorado Rockies from Denver. What we were looking for was a relaxing getaway. However, we had seven members of our family in our group, covering three generations, which can make relaxing difficult. We found Villa Italiano to be a delightful no-hassles alternative to the all-inclusive scene, at 1/3 the cost. It is large enough that the seven of us weren't falling all over each other, and were able to relax and enjoy. The location put us close enough to Tulum and Puerto Aventuras that visiting attractions and making grocery runs was no big deal. Akumal is withing hiking distance for those who want to enjoy the restaurants and attractions (wear shoes, there is some rock scrambling involved). We spent most of our time taking in the sun and the surf. Swimming, snorkeling, and kayaking were daily activities (well, relaxing with a cold one and a good book was up there, too). The beautiful property is clean and well maintained. The kitchen is well stocked with all of the necessities for cooking and serving.
As to attractions, I visited the Tulum ruins when Playa del Carmen was a fishing village and the Mayan Riviera was virgin beach. Otherwise, that's a must-do--but in the morning before the heat and tourists arrive. Xel-Ha has been Disneyfied and priced to the point of ridiculousness. Yal-Ku Lagoon in Akumal is a much better choice. Also the Xel-Ha archaeological site is very close by. It is not a major site like Chichen-Itza or even Tulum, but it is interesting (if you are into Mayan culture), and rarely visited (we were the only party on site). The site boasts two cenotes for those who are inclined to take a swim and cool off--no extra charfe.
So, if you want a frenetic vacation activity with all the food and drink you can possibly stomach, and all the activities you can cram into the time available, go somewhere else. If your idea of a vacation is kicking back, relaxing, and enjoying the ambiance of one of the most beautiful stretches of beach on the planet, this is a good place to do it. Highly recommended, and we will likely return.
I cannot even put into words how wonderful a vacation we had here. The house was perfect for our group of three couples. The back door opens to white sand and beautiful clear blue water. The location is perfect as we were close to a nearby beach bar and two restaurants and just a short walk away to the major road. We alternated between being beach bums and taking the collectivos into nearby cities. It is very quiet and private which we loved. The house was extremely comfortable. Thank you for a vacation we will never forget!
Easy to rent, easy to get to, convenient to groceries, area attractions and diving. The house and grounds were great and private. The crystal clear water with sandy beach entrance was around 40 paces from the house. Great ocean breeze everyday with the sound of waves we greatly miss. House comes with daily grounds keeper, very thorough daily maid service and property manager always accessible. Any issues will be handled professionally. Why would you stay in a hotel or condo primarily for sleeping and fighting for chairs and beach space? Pay less, receive same care or BETTER and enjoy a 3 bed 3 bath home (one room w/2 beds) with your own private beach and a house you actually look forward to being in. We enjoyed great kayaking and snorkeling right off the beach, scuba diving just beyond the reef in front of the house as well as the very close cenotes (google it). We visited Tulum and Coba ruins cheap and close approx 10 and 45 mins away with shopping along the way. Our 15 yr old daughter really enjoyed the convenience of snorkeling in front of the house as well as with the turtles in the next bay to the north (don't pay to park or let them charge you for snorkeling in front of Lol Ha at Akumal). Our 17 yr old son became a certified diver during the week through the dive shop practically next door. The rest of the trip was spent enjoying the sun, relaxing in the hammock or the very comfortable lounge chairs under the shade Palapa on beach. We enjoyed having just about every meal outside under the attached palapa covered porch. Tips: grocery shopping at Chedraui, a supermarket 10 minutes north and another one in Playa, (cheaper than home) peso 12.55 to $1 US. Exchange money at a bank once you are in Mexico NOT the airport only 10 peso to $1. Don't panic there are banks once you leave the airport. If it's Sat. or Sun just exchange a little bit. ATM's work well too. Chedraui and multiple banks in Playa Del. Great tacos btw at little restaurant on corner across street of east end of supermarket. Rent a car, it's easy. PACK LIGHT! We pack one carry-on/person and check one large bag for our family of 4 and still don't. Bring your own snorkel gear and pack Target sunscreen (good stuff) in checked luggage along with all your snorkel/dive gear. We have been blessed to travel the Caribbean, spent weeks on various Islands and taken a few cruises so this review does not come as a first time beach vacation buzz. One of our top 3 family vacations for sure.
