We are a Franco-American family (kids 12 and 16) and spent 3 weeks here and enjoyed every minute of it. Of all our past rentals in France, this house stands out for its combination of charm, comfort and cleanliness. We like to cook and doing that here was a real pleasure.
The view to the South is like a living postcard with the river, the old bridge, the chapel and the mountains. The terrace and loggia are privileged places to enjoy this.
The village of Axat is “well-equipped” and convenient (butcher, bakery, grocery store, post office, pharmacy, etc.). It is also well situated with an outstanding amount of cultural and natural sites to visit in the area.
The owner is very helpful and quick to respond and the fact that booking from Saturday to Saturday, is not an obligation, which is often the case in France, is a real plus.
Our recommendations are: hiking in the amazing “Labyrinthe Vert” near Nébias (west of Quillan), taking advantage of a sunny day at the St-Cyprien Beach (south of Perpignan), rafting in the “Défilé de la Pierre-Lys” gorge and drinking “Blanquette de Limoux”, the first sparkling wine ever produced.
The house fully lived up to our expectations and we hope to be back soon!
We spent in this sweet place about 12 days. Axat and Susan´s and Michaels´s home is still staying very close to our heart. You ask why?
There were lot of things. Because of the owners who we met when we arrived. They were friendly, simple and caring and offered even a lunch for us. Beacause of the house placing which was rare - the house was so close to the rive and there was always very fresh and calming feeling. We love the nature and Axat is situating naturaly beautiful place. Mountains, river, old buildings. Peole are friendly and smileing. We did lot of hikes in the mountains and that we liked the most.
Also one good thing to enjoy was food and wine. In the area there was a lot of little markets with good food that we visited and enjoyed.
Our little girls really enjoyed Axat´s pool, which we visited also every day.
The weather was perfect and sun was shineing. The house is very compfortable and nice. We were lucky to find this place!
All of the reviews below are absolutely correct. We stayed in this property for a week with our 10 year old son and our only complaint was that we did not stay longer.
The pictures on this site really do not do the house justice - the owners have done a beautiful job in renovating and decorating the property and it has absolutely everything you need in it. One of my favourite things to do was sit on the lower balcony in the sunshine listening to the river going by. I also spent many happy hours reading in the hammock on the upper balcony.
The little town of Axat is lovely. It has two restaurants (we ate in both, but more so in the restaurant of Hotel Axat), a small bar, and a few shops with lovely fresh produce - I developed a reliance on fresh croissants for breakfast while there. There is a pizza van selling very tasty freshly made pizza to order on a Wednesday night from the little square in Axat. The setting of the local outdoor pool is unmissable - the pool itself is pristine, and the slide keeps kids amused for hours.
We went on drives to see the spectacular gorges, rafting on the river with Sud Rafting, located approx 1km from Axat and highly recommended, we went on a day trip to the medieval city of Carcassone (just over an hours drive) and to the coast near Perpignan (around 1.5 hours drive). There is absolutely loads to do in the area to keep kids (and adults) amused - if you can make yourself leave the house and the local surrounds of Axat that is!
We're already planning our return journey.
We just spent 9 days in Axat in September. It's a great time to go – nice weather, not too many people and beautiful countryside.
The phrase that describes how I feel about Axat as well as about the house: totally charmed by them. Others have written about various aspects of the house, the town and the region. I agree with their comments wholeheartedly and would like to focus on a few things I really enjoyed.
My favorite thing was to sit on the porch in the mornings reading the English language newspaper I had just gotten from the Presse, eating the croissant and baguette I'd just gotten from the bakery, plus fruit from the grocer, meats and eggs from the butcher, and goat cheese from the Thursday Axat market, while looking at the beautiful Old Bridge just yards away and the rugged mountains behind the village, and listening to the river and the church bells that ring every hour and half hour. Nothing I did on this vacation was more enjoyable.
Axat and that region are great places to do lots of interesting and fun things. It's also a great place to do very little. On two days, we hung around the house, walked around the town, ate in the restaurants and were completely content.
We went to the weekly markets in Esperaza and Limoux. I highly recommend both – for the food, the locally-made items, the mixture of people, and the shops and restaurants around the markets.
In Limoux we visited the Piano Museum. It's in a former church, so there's plenty of room for the many pianos. The museum focuses on the development of the piano and the various kinds of pianos. I am a pianist, and they kindly tolerated me playing the Steinway on the small stage. It felt special to be playing Debussy and Faure who were French, Chopin who was half French and lived in Paris, and Gershwin who wrote “An American in Paris.“
I notice that every reviewer gives the house 5 stars. No surprise there. The house is larger than it looks in the pictures that show it from the outside. The rooms are spacious, and the workmanship is really good throughout. The kitchen and the bathrooms are plenty big and well appointed.
This is a special region, Axat is a special town, and this house is a special place to stay.
Our family (two adults and 10-year-old daughter) spent a delightful week in Axat. We loved the house, which completely lived up to our expectations. The rooms are spacious, comfortably furnished, and attractively decorated. The plumbing and electrical systems are modern and efficient, the washer and dryer in perfect working order, and the wi-fi internet access fast and reliable. We especially enjoyed the modern and well equipped kitchen, which made meal preparation easy and pleasant. The information package provided by the owners giving information about the house, the town, and nearby attractions was extremely helpful and much appreciated.
The location of the house is perfect – out the front door, the epicerie, boulangerie, charcuterie, boucherie, ATM, restaurants and bar are just steps away, and out the back there are spectacular views of the river, the town, and the mountains. Parking was always available close by in the village square.
Axat is a great base for excursions of all types. For the historically minded, the nearby Cathar castles are not be missed (check out this video: http://vimeo.com/45206949), and a visit to the medieval Cité de Carcassone is well worth the one-hour drive. For those interested in outdoor activities, the surrounding mountains offer many hiking and biking opportunities, and nearby commercial operators offer white-water rafting, rock climbing, caving, and tree-top adventure courses, to name just a few options. Fly fishing for trout and grayling is also possible, although those fishing the Pyrenees for the first time would be well advised to engage the services of a guide, because local fishing methods and tactics are quite specialized. The municipal swimming pool is an excellent option for those with children. For the gastronomes, while the dining opportunities in Axat proper are limited, several restaurants within easy driving distance offer good if relatively unpretentious meals.
What we especially enjoyed about staying in Axat was the feeling of being off the beaten tourist path. Even though our stay coincided with the peak of the holiday season, we never felt that we were in a vacation destination, and residents consistently outnumbered visitors on the streets and in the shops. Over time, it seems inevitable that the region will attract more and more visitors, but for now it is still possible to enjoy a part of France where many daily routines remain relatively unscarred by outsiders.
We spent 1 week here, (family of four, kids 11 and 13) and had a wonderful time.
The house was just as described, impeccably furnished, beautifully renovated and clean. The sound and sight of the river was heavenly from the balcony on the first floor and from the loggia off of the master suite. By the end of our week we had come to associate the river with utter and immediate relaxation. Rafters went by on occasion, which was very fun. The view of the dramatic mountains was also really tremendous.
The kitchen was large and fully equipped for all cooking needs, and we prepared many delicious meals there with goods from various markets- Quillan and Esperaza, and the small one in Axat itself. The rooms were airy, bright and spacious, particularly the master suite on the top floor. The hammock was enjoyed by all. Having a glass of wine in the evening while gazing at the mountains and river was delightful.
The town pool was fantastic, with fun water jets and curvy slide for the kids and a grassy area for seating- not crowded at all.
The location of the house is very well located for all sight-seeing in the area- castles of Puilaurens, Peyrepetuse, Queribus, amazing gorges –Galamus, St. Pierre de Lys, St. Georges, and Verdouble. The gorges are breathtaking- hiking is a paradise. We never had any issues with traffic or masses of tourists- it was incredibly easy to get around.
The owner is very nice and provides ample information about the house and surrounding area. Verify with him if the wifi is now working (this was our only issue with the house). The people in town are also very friendly, and there are some terrific epiceries, boulangeries and boucheries. The foie gras we bought a few doors down was heavenly. They actually provide the foie gras for the Rebenty restaurant toward Quillan (a great spot). Across the street- Auberge La Petite Ourse has a wonderful cave and delicious food and is run by exceedingly nice people. Also- check out the Bar Le Central and enjoy a meal overlooking the rushing river.
In summary, we highly recommend a stay in this home in Axat. We miss it already!
