This is a perfect property for folks who want to get away from it all, relax, and enjoy Swan's Island. The house is lovely with a well-equipped kitchen and a great barn for hanging out, having meals, and watching TV. We were there during the Rio Olympics and so the big TV there was a real bonus. There's plenty to do on Swan's Island if you like things like a pancake breakfast at the Odd Fellows Hall, a ham and mac dinner at the Baptist church, lounging on Fine Sand Beach, swimming in the quarry, and just relaxing. Don't miss sunset at the light house!
My family and I have been going to Swans Island for the last 45 years. I have stayed in many properties around the island. We usually rented the same house every year because we knew it well and were comfortable. This year that rental was not available so we decided to rent this house and take a chance. It was beyond our best expectations. Absolutely wonderful house. The barn is better than you can imagine. I have a lot of family that own homes on the island and we entertained guests in the barn all week. It was so much fun. The main house is also very nice and well appointed. The master bath and bedroom are very spacious with a wonderful shower and large tub and plenty of room for two people to maneuver. The kitchen is just big enough for two or even 3 people to be in there working on dinner. The bunk bed room worked out just right for our son and there is another small guest room in the back. The location for us was perfect, you can walk to TIMS the small market and get lunch or groceries. Not a long walk to the Lobster Co Op either and a nice beautiful walk to the lighthouse. This has become our new home to rent on the island.
Bill and Victoria who own the property were very helpful in the rental process and if you are visiting the island for the first time they will carefully and thoughtfully walk you through all of the little things you need to know in order to safely arrive on the island. From helping with the ferry schedule to all of the options for food and fun when you arrive.
We will be back again soon!!
My family of 4- my husband and and 2 teens( 15 & 17) had a wonderful time on Swan's island. The house was great- had all the amenities and creature comforts for a wonderful vacation. My husband and I love to cook and bake . After his morning swim and my morning walk/yoga we spent a lot of time in the kitchen making all kinds of food we don't normally have time to make at home. Swans island allowed us to slow down rest relax and enjoy lots of family time.
We took a beautiful walk to goose pond several times. The Quarry was also a neat place to hang out and swim.
Our children became expert table tennis players. They got so good that they played with their non-dominant hand and still kicked my butt! They stayed in the small cozy room next to the house. They loved the privacy! The barn was also a great family hangout. Bill was very helpful in giving me suggestions of what to do. We didn't leave the island as we have been to Mt Desert island a few times before. I would suggest going to a large grocery store to stock up before getting on the ferry. This was great as we didn't need much once we got there and it's more cost effective. The owners of the store on Swans were very nice and accommodating when we did need something. This is the ultimate vacation away from home if you need to chill out.
There are plenty of mosquitos so bring your bug spray if they like you!!!
Our friends who originally told us about Swan's island cooked us the best lobster I have ever had. Of course it was super fresh and delish from a local lobsterman.
Swans is supremely beautiful and pristine. You will not be disappointed staying at this beautiful home. Thanks Bill and Victoria!!
The property is clean and well maintained. The house is bright and cheerful, bedrooms cozy and the layout makes it feel bigger than it looks. The master bedroom with its own bath and shower feels very separate from the rest of the house. There is a lovely screened in porch that we sat in just before bedtime each night. The sleeping barn is absolutely adorable and was immediately snatched up by my son: "This one's MINE, this place is DOPE!"
But the real crown jewel of this house is the barn. We pretty much spent all of our time in the barn. It is gigantic, with huge doors that swing wide open and keep the view always present. We ate all of our meals at the big table in the barn, painted and put puzzles together on the big craft table in the back, played music on the stereo, lounged on the sofa, considered turning on the big flat screen tv to watch a movie and eat popcorn if it rained, but we had fine weather and never did turn it on. We loved the idea that we could though. We used the wifi to find lyrics to songs we sang and played and were thrilled to find a piano in the barn to add to the "band". I can't say enough about how delightful the barn is. We did some serious family quality time there.
The garage was handy for the 3 bikes that I brought (along with the 3 bikes already in the garage, the place looked like a bike shop!). I was relieved to find a floor pump, as I had forgotten mine.
The house is just next door to Odd Fellows Hall where there were exercise classes MWF mornings. Sometimes there are events there like pancake breakfasts, chili cook off or a concert, but the week we were there did not have anything scheduled beyond the exercise classes. It is a short walk to the Island Market which is fantastic. The kids liked walking over to get their harbor bars and make special orders of sticky buns. We also loved the lobster steamer set up in the back yard. We went to Trafton's warf and got lobsters to steam in the back yard. Hilarious field trip (we had to pull our own traps at the dock) and delicious dinner. We brought our canoe and launched trips around the island from the canoe carry, which is also a short walk from the house.
I've been visiting the island for the last 15 years and have stayed at several houses. When you add up all the conveniences and unique attributes of this house it really is at the top of my list of places to stay on Swan's Island. Thank you for letting us stay at your lovely house.
We are a family of five, and enjoyed a fantastic week at this house. The house itself was very nice, with a well stocked kitchen and a very comfortable lounge area and screened porch. The kids enjoyed the barn, and a good wifi connection. We made use of the bbq and, on the rare occasion that the weather let us down, the board games in the house.
We enjoyed exploring the island on the bikes provided, which brings me on to the owners. Bill was incredibly helpful before we arrived, e-mailing all kinds of information and advice, from what to do in Acadia National Park, to where to rent extra bikes and how to manage ferry crossings. This made everything so much easier, and allowed us to settle into life on the island immediately.
I notice that other reviewers have touched upon their stress about catching the ferry. We avoided this by leaving the car at home, once we were on the island. It was a 10-15 min cycle ride to the ferry terminal, and crossing as a foot passenger with a bike took all of the worry out of wondering if your car would make the next sailing. Anyway, both times we used the ferry with a car, we got straight on. All in all a fantastic place for a holiday, and we will be back as soon as we are able! Andrew, Anita and family.
I'm almost afraid to write this for fear that interest in the place will increase and I'll be unable to go there again, but I know I can't be like that so... this is a very nice place!
Putting the beautiful island aside, I'm not a good enough writer to describe it all, Bill and Victoria's property has everything that you would desire for a perfect vacation. The place was very clean with an extremely well stocked pantry. The property is very nicely decorated and furnished. We found it to be very comfortable and welcoming.
The only problem we encountered was that there was so much to do on the island we were not be able to take advantage of all that Bill and Victoria's place has to offer. There are games, bicycles, a small but very nice and diverse library, hammock, screened in porch, and two TVs, wifi and a party barn that I could live in if it had running water. I can't tell you if the big screen TV in the barn works because during our week there we never even thought about turning it on.
They say that one of the keys of a good vacation is the ability to get away from one another once in a while. Bill and Victoria's place gives you that. My children are all independant young adults and we had a conflict free vacation because we were all able to find our own space when needed. But at the end of each day we would all gather together in the barn, open the doors, let the sea breeze in and enjoy it all . Total contentment .
We found Bill and Victoria to be very easy to deal with and it's my opinion that they truly want you to enjoy their place. I know my entire family did. We had a great time! Thank you.
