Good place for a family reunion
This house worked remarkably well for our family reunion.
We were initially disappointed – shocked, really – when the owner, who had stayed there the previous week, had not moved out by our arrival at 4:30 pm, rendering the cleaner’s job impossible. We were not able to move in until about 5:30 and even then the sheets were not clean in his room. The owner seems to have lost the plot a bit. We felt sorry for the cleaner who tried sincerely to get her work done in spite of this significant setback and the owner’s rather clueless inconsideration of her and his renters.
Once past that hurdle, we were happy with how well the spaces, house and location worked for our family reunion. It had the rare capability of accommodating a power-wheelchair-bound quadriplegic and family in the main floor king bedroom (the downstairs bathroom is also large enough for management of her needs), six children 8 y.o. and under, two additional older children and multiple adults as well as day visits from a wheel-chair-bound centenarian, a one-year-old toddler and other family members as we visited and enjoyed meals together. The open floor plan on the main level, feeding onto a large deck with great view, worked really well for group interaction (The deck and old picnic table need cleaning). There were plenty of dishes and flatware, and Bill, the owner, had just bought new barbeques, an additional picnic table and new deck furniture, all of which we really appreciated. We built a ramp to navigate the 4” deck edge (left there). With the exception of the opening at the central steps, the deck railing’s vertical spindles and ground-level side entrance to the lawn made the remainder of the deck child-safe. The views of the water are wonderful as is the proximity of the shoreland and beach area, within view and easy access. In mid-August the surrounding trees provide some shade when needed. Our quadriplegic could roll up to the edge of the beach, shore area and fire ring near the beach to enjoy being with the family and children. The children found endless hours of fascination on the variegated shore, rocks and water (bring water shoes). We very much appreciated having double kayaks to use, as well as a canoe. They really enhanced our enjoyment of the nearby waters and shores, and enabled adults to take children out.
The appliances were fine, esp. having a W/D (though no dishwasher); we definitely needed our very large cooler. The folding card table is helpful for games etc.
Great house and location, but needs TLC
Bill has a beautiful location and great house, but per below comments and Bill's lack of making corrections per the feedback, I have to be honest and offer my family's experience. In Bill's words I was going to stay in "luxury accommodations"-with a lot of decluttering, major reorganization of supplies/household items, some minor improvements, and a deep cleaning I would agree.
We've stayed in some great rentals and I am using past experiences as a barometer. There did not seem to be any thought towards a renters needs in this cottage. There was very little information/directions given on the cottage or the local area. There were no beach chairs available-something difficult to carry with us. Other cottages have provided games, outdoor toys/swimming toys, outdoor furniture, and items that provided a home away from home. This is not the case at this location.
We had a very late cancellation for our weekly rental (2 days prior to vacation) and were able to book Bill's cottage on Friday for a Saturday arrival. I believe I got a reduced rental rate at Bill's, but if I had paid his normal advertised rental rate I' would have been extremely dissatisfied. Our first hours were spent cleaning the kitchen and fridge and organizing closets so we could put our things away. Some of the improvements I would suggest are: replace all screens (many holes), replace some of the living area furniture, deck needs pressure washed and furniture other than picnic table, grill replacement, paper/soap products not supplied and should be, and missing basic kitchen supplies/cookware.
Pro's: Oceanfront, nice beach, South Thomaston area, great house layout, kayaks, wi-fi
Con's: Cleanliness, lack of kitchen utensils, clutter, no usable board games, only contact with care taker was thru texting, lack of written instructions, grill in disrepair, pictures in the listing are very old and the cottage has changed dramatically.
I hope Bill will read this and make the changes that are needed to make this cottage the best on Pleasant Beach. If he were to address the issues per the comments above and below, he would be offering a luxury accommodation.
We had a great week in the house. Everything was awesome, the kids enjoyed hours of climbing on the rocks and exploring the waters, collecting shells, sea glass and catching crabs. And the view was beautiful! The house was perfect for us. They had everything we needed, and plenty of room. The kayaks were a bonus, we used them a lot! The location was perfect, Anything we needed was just a short drive away. If we ever make it back to Maine we would definitely stay here again!
We had a blast here, we came up on Saturday with our kids and grandkids, they stayed 2 nights. With all 9f us here 8t was just wonderful. The beach is at your doorstep, with a fire pit next to 5he ocean. We had a lobster bake thanks to Chris and dajah, they were great providing the lobsters fresh off the boat and recycled the shells for us. This place 8s like visiting camp that has been in the family for years.! Thanks bill, dajah and Chris for making this stay wonderful.
Great location, pleasant cottage
7 adults, siblings and husbands, most retired, stayed 4 days at the cottage. The location was terrific for all that we wanted to do: visit the art museums in Rockland, hike on Vinalhaven island, visit Camden and hike the trails in the area. We particularly enjoyed the Beech Hill walk, the hike up to Mt Battie in the Camden Hills, Owls Head lighthouse, and the breakwater walk in Rockland. The cottage had ample room for us and sunrise from the deck was beautiful. We combed the beach in front of the house for beautiful, orange, smooth periwinkles. A bald eagle flew by a couple of times, a hummingbird searched a bush for spiders and the common eider were feeding by the rocks at each high tide. The decks outside of the bedrooms on the second floor and the dining area on the main floor were a great feature.
The kitchen had all of the utensils we needed but to be honest, we discovered the towels we needed wet and in the washing machine, one of the main controls of the stove was broken, and the electrical outlet in the bathroom on the main floor was not working. For us, this was not a problem, as we grew up with a rustic family cottage. The owner was very friendly and helpful. We enjoyed our stay very much.
Great View & Value
Maranatha Cottage housed our three generations of family quite well. There was plenty of space for the seven of us. It's always great getting family together to play cribbage, board games and relax after hockey. The cottage was warm and comfortable. The view from all the bedrooms was picturesque!
