Everything you need to enjoy a peaceful and relaxing get away. I have been to Casa Carole three times, with every experience being more enjoyable that the last.
The location provides more than just the basics. Local market, restaurants within walking distance, beachfront that goes for what seems like forever and a pool just outside the door, for the lazy afternoons. Travelling out to Tamarindo is super easy, with a water taxi only a few min away. The house was clean in such a way that would satisfy any greek mother.
When I was not taking pictures of the beautiful natural gardens, the boogie boarding was a treat! Hide tide was adventurous, with low tide being the perfect time for a long walk along the shoreline.
The first two visits included venturing out for a Volcano and Hot Springs Tour (which picked us up right at the driveway--4 people required) or finding an activity such as Tree Top Trekking. I found myself much more interested in enjoying the relaxing atmosphere of the outdoor patio at Casa Carole, along with the local beach. We practically had the beach all to ourselves. There were some people here and there, but never did I see more than a handful of folks enjoying the vast landscape that was ever so picturesque.
Casa Carole appeals to my practical side of being able to cook the easy meals right at home, while offering options for eating out, that are mostly within walking distance. The patio outside the living area is my favourite shaded spot to sit and enjoy morning coffee. Late afternoons were spent poolside enjoying beverages and those books I keep meaning to read.
Would I recommend this to a friend? Only if I was not already booked again myself!
I have made this property my home away from home, returning twice per year since my first visit in 2015. The house is spotless, the kitchen is incredibly well stocked with appliances and dishes - there is no "roughing it" here! The area is very safe and quiet. For more action, Tamarindo is a short water taxi ride away. There are options for meals - cooking at home is great, with a small market nearby, or meals can be had at restaurants in the neighbourhood. The beach at Playa Grande is enormous and very private- except for the evening ritual where folks gather on the beach to watch the sunset, creating a lovely sense of community. When I say "folks", I mean 20 people. This is a very private beach. The ocean is great for swimming, boogie boarding and surfing. There are excursions available - they are coordinated from various spots in the neighbourhood. Staying at Casa Carole means that you can tailor your vacation to your particular desire for action and adventure and quiet and relaxation. This is a lovely home and I highly recommend it. I plan to make this a repeat destination for many years to come.
Our family of 4; 2 teenagers are having a great stay. Fabulous swimming beach where you can use the villa boogie boards to hit the surf each day. We saw a Olive Ridley turtle return to the ocean after laying eggs about an hour before high tide one afternoon. Pool is great. Property manager sorts out any items and requests for your stay.
Our family of four (incl 2 teen boys) loved staying at Casa Carole! This was our first trip to CR, and we weren't sure where to stay, but we lucked out! We arrived 2 weeks before Christmas, and it was very quiet- pretty much had the place to ourselves! We always seek small, quaint & quiet locations and this was perfect! As others have mentioned, it was about a 10 minute walk to the beach, but we didn't mind as we almost always saw new (& friendly) critters along the way. One day the road was overflowing with tiny red crabs. Not sure what made that day any different, but highly interesting and fun!
The beach was amazing. Wide and expansive, with thousands of corkscrew shells on the beach at low tide. The conditions were perfect for boogie boarding a couple times a day, and great for long walks. The sand is quite compact at the water, so easy to walk on. We loved walking near the channel crossing to Tamarindo, as it always seemed full of crabs, fish and birds at low tide.
The house itself was very clean, tidy and well stocked. The property manager was helpful, friendly and very responsive the one night we ran out of propane for the oven while cooking dinner. Problem solved very fast..barely time to finish the drink I had pored while expecting a wait! The doors and windows were well secured with options for locking at night. The only small complaint would be that the living room furniture isn't very comfy, but it's built in, so not too many options I guess. We ate most of our meals on the outdoor patio and enjoyed the hammock.
We ate out a couple times, including the BBQ next door at Seven's which was pretty tasty. They also have a small store if you need essentials, but expensive as one would expect at this type of store. We drove 10+mins to a great local grocery that was well stocked and priced. We walked to Hotel Bula one day and arranged a water taxi to Tamarindo. That was a fun, short river boat ride, and we enjoyed lunch at a brew pub there while watching the surfers. Tamarindo was lovely for a few hours, but glad we were staying in quiet Playa Grande!
Unfortunately we didn't see any turtles, but Casa Carole at Playa Grande was still our favorite location. We spent another week down south in Nosara, which was equally interesting, but we preferred the beaches of Playa Grande. Thank you again Carole, for being great to deal with and letting travelers share your home. We hope to be back one day!
We had a wonderful 7 day stay at Casa Carole. The bedrooms are large and the air-conditioners are quiet; the kitchen is well stocked with nice dishware, glasses, cutlery and appliances; the shared area is comfortable, roomy and breezy; the outdoor sitting area is lush and private, hammock is comfy. Wifi makes Internet access easy. Bikes are one-speed and perfectly adequate for cruising around to check out the area. Boogie boards and fins are available. The walk to the beach is more like 10 minutes, but it is a pleasant walk, always a chance to see birds and iguanas. We went to the beach 3-4 times a day, returning to the cool sanctuary of Casa Carole for a break from the sun. Outdoor shower and foot faucet make sand removal easy. Hotel Bula Bula is close by with great Mango Margaritas and charming staff. Playa Grande is gorgeous, with endless waves, and lots of wide open space. Playa Grande Surf Camp is near by with flexible deals for beginners. A great location in paradise with a reasonable price.
It was hard to leave this lovely little piece of paradise after spending 7 days feeling at home at Casa Carole! Everything was as expected when we arrived - complete kitchen, big bedrooms, cozy living room with a nice little patio surrounded by lush gardens overlooking a refreshing swimming pool. Felt very private despite being shared by others in the six-villa complex. We loved how close a walk it was to the glorious beach (5 minutes max) and amazed at how uncrowded it was. Gorgeous sunsets and fabulous surf (boogie boards provided by Casa Carole). This little neighbourhood in Playa Grande is removed from the busy-ness of Tamarindo yet just a water taxi ride away. A very short walk to the grocery store kept us stocked up on all we needed and with Hotel Bula Bula just down the road, an evening drink with the local neighbours would wrap up our days spent out an adventure or just sitting by the pool with a good book and the sound of nature all around us. Alyssa, the property manager, was just a phone call away and she was helpful both with any household questions or helping secure our tours for the week. Wi-fi was available without any service issues or interruptions - just like home! Casa Carole also had lots of board games to keep busy in case of rain - (which we didn’t get) and A/C in the bedrooms so sleeping and napping were no problem in the heat.
I will definitely be back!
