Wish there was a zero stars rating. Very surprised by all the positive reviews of this place. We stay down in this area for a week every year. Normally we see a few roaches/palmettos where ever we stay but NOTHING like this. We saw several the first day, then it just started to escalate. Roaches/Palmettos falling from the ceiling, crawling on the sofas, in the bathrooms, on the BED PILLOWS (yuck yuck yuck!) crawling across the coffee table where my son was eating a snack. This was all during the day - nighttime was worse! We even designated a pair of flip flops just for killing the bugs. Finally we couldn't stand it anymore, so we contacted the property manager who asked me if I had any photos of the roaches. Excuse me? We were too busy killing them to stop and have a photo shoot! When we decided to leave a day early because we couldn't stand it anymore, I asked for a refund for just the one day (hopefully we didn't bring any travelers home) which was promptly refused. I was informed that the lady before us had no complaints so there must not be a problem. Terrible customer service! I was also informed that they exterminate only every 8-10 weeks!!!! Not enough for this area clearly! If you rent this place, just know in advance that there are openings to the outside around all the doors, in the floors and around some of the windows so anything can just crawl in. And it did - we even had a salamander in the bedroom. Also, once we started looking under the beds and furniture to "take photos of the roaches" we saw all sorts of disgusting things we wish we hadn't: dead roaches, garbage, straws, old cheerios and food. The place is not clean. All the furniture and rugs are stained. I would post all the photos we did take here if Home Away offered that option. Also, I'd like to point out that we did not leave anything out to entice the critters - everything was in ziplocks or in the refrigerator and no dishes were left out. Can you imagine if we had? Ugh. I shudder to think. Please do yourself a favor and rent another place. Sullivan's Island is beautiful, but this house is truly disgusting. P.S. we rented the big house, not the cottage.
We loved our stay at this casual, family friendly beach house! We wanted a quiet and relaxing location to call home while we toured the Charleston area. It was close enough to downtown to make the commute an easy one, yet far enough away to have the shabby chic secluded beach house experience. The kitchen had everything we needed for preparing any meals we wanted to have there. Plenty of room for us to stretch out, loved all the windows. While there are homes nearby the trees around you give you a very private feel. We loved the screened in porch and had our coffee there every morning. The short walk to the beach was a pretty one, only a block to the water. We loved the South Carolina Aquarium and Fort Sumter tour was really enjoyed by my husband and son. The carriage rides downtown gave a great overview of the area and we loved just walking the streets of Charleston checking out the architecture. We also went to some of the estates and a plantation nearby. Charleston is just a beautiful area with lots to explore!
First of all, this was my first time at Sullivan's Island. Normally I rent at Folly and recently tried Isle of Palms. Folly, after the beach enrichment and subsequent wash away has a beach that early in day looks like surface of Mars, with coral or volcanic stones and broken shells at the surf line shredding tender heels. Isle of palms is great if you want to sit close enough to next guy on the sand to hear him talk down to his unhappy wife and kids. Sullivan's Island is just right. Soft sand underfoot, beautiful walkways, plenty of space between others (who incidentally, look like they don't panic when the window envelopes arrive in the mail at the first of the month and subsequently speak to each other in the dulcet tones of the comfortably off) and the people on the streets of Center Street speak to you and wave, or even offer advice to make your visit to the island that much nice.
I stayed in the one bedroom elevated cottage. There is a beautiful tree outside the floor to ceiling windows behind the slip-covered sofa. The pictures on this website do not show how this area of the cottage feel to be within. It is a tree house effect. The house has heart pine floors, pine walls and board and batten ceilings. The home owners painted the rooms on the perimeter white or gold and left the kitchen in the middle natural. The effect is lovely and I appreciated the restraint. The house is a haven, tastefully decorated without being at all fussy and on a corner lot within a short stroll to an aforementioned pretty walkover. Bring your own cutting knife and if you are like me and need the softness, don't forget a memory foam mattress pad to cover the very firm queen sized mattress. The pillows, towels and bedding were good.
I got to know the neighbors in the main house, not by design but by happy accident. That house is very nice as well, with three bedrooms situated off from on another for privacy.
This was our first vacation rental on SI and we could not have been any happier with the accommodations and location of this charming 1920's house . . . it is everything a true beach house should be! This house has all the modern conveniences of a newer home yet maintains much beauty and charm with the original architectural features. It is very spacious, clean, quiet, cheerful and bright. We loved all the natural light! The beds were extremely comfortable . . . we especially liked that they were already made up with clean linens when we arrived :) We brought our bicycles and enjoyed riding the short distance to Isle of Palms to explore in addition to riding our bikes to all the wonderful restaurants in town. We enjoyed evening cocktails on the spacious screened porch followed by a convenient stroll on the beach before dinner to watch the beautiful sunsets. I began each day with a run through the quiet, shady streets on the island admiring the lovely homes and their well manicured lawns.
The property manager, Brad, provided excellent service and promptly returned all emails . . . thanks Brad for being so accessible! We have already booked our stay for next year and hope to make this an annual tradition!
I had the most beautiful, serene stay at the detached cottage to the larger beach house. The detached cottage was simply cozy and had the feel of a a "rustic Pottery Barn" beach cottage. It was very clean, impeccably appointed and equipped with everything one needed for a quiet stay. The cottage was literally a half block from the the beach. The windows all throughout the cottage offered beautiful light and views of the lush landscapes. I sat every morning on the tiny front porch sipping coffee, reading and praying. Brad was a delightful host - responsive, friendly and helpful. I highly recommend this property if you are seeking serenity, peace and beauty. My thanks to the owners for sharing your lovely home and to Brad for making a dream come true.
My parents have rented the small guest home or as we call it the tree house, a few times now and love it. It is a charming, rustic small cottage with privacy and everything you need for your stay. It was clean with expected beach wear and tear but the manager is always happy to help if something is missing or needed. The cottage is located about one block away from the best part of sullivans island beach and has a private covered parking spot. I would recommend this property to a couple or individual who enjoys long walks on the beach, eating out and a quiet getaway without kids, TV or other distractions.
