Vizinho do lado da propriedade é Two Lights State Park.
We were pleasantly surprised when we arrived at the Mushroom and Steve had a fire going in the stone fireplace. It was the perfect welcome, smell of the crackling fire drew us into this old charming piece of history. Steve thinks of everything his guests will need, even a case of bottled water was there for us! He went above and beyond to answer all our questions before we arrived. The house while old is very clean and well kept. Furnishings are comfortable. It was so easy to relax and unwind after busy days of biking and hiking. Beaches are walking distance, great dining nearby and quick drive to Portland. We even ventured to Acadia for a day trip to hike and bike which was well worth the drive. Highly recommend staying at the mushroom to taste a piece of history!
Like the previous reviewers have said, this rustic home is the perfect place to “get away from it all” but without having to give up any modern conveniences. If you’re looking for a place to create some of those old-fashioned, fun family memories with the kids, this is it.
Between the sounds of the ocean and the breeze through the trees, or the morning sunrises or evenings by the stone fireplace, there was always something to create a wonderful mood. And we simply plugged in our (outdated) iPod Touch and were able to play our favorite music. (There are also a TV/DVD player and plenty of DVDs for kids, as well as games and puzzles.)
And it was so easy to get to the local beaches or to food shopping or downtown Portland. Can’t think of a better place for a nostalgic, relaxing and easy vacation.
We rented for a week in July, and we had the usual Maine weather mix for that time of year. On hot days the cabin cooled nicely (many fans and large screened windows). It was a rare 92 degrees in Portland when we arrived, and we watched the car thermometer drop to 82 by the time we got to the cape! On cool rainy days, we had everything we needed: books, games (beautiful chess and cribbage sets), stereo that takes mp3, video games for the kids and a kitchen with everything you need. The place is so cozy and homey that you don't feel like you have to escape if it's not a beachy day. My 10 year old son loved sleeping on the porch couch (even though he had a bed.)
As advertised, the place makes you feel like you are having a vacation early in the 20th century, with hardwood floors and electric lantern lamps, yet all the modern conveniences are there and the wireless (internet) works great.
Steve was very easy to work with and responded quickly to any questions. We didn't lack anything while we were there, but if we did, I know that he would have sprung to help us out.
All the area attractions are high quality. We loved the local restaurants, and it's easy to get groceries, drugs store items, etc. We enjoyed Two Lights Park (walking distance) for rocky shore views and Crescent Beach (a mile's drive) gave us a good dose of the sand beach experience.
We will be back.
The 'Mushroom" as its owners affectionately call it, has so much to offer. It is secluded, but close to many attractions, rustic but comfortable, old-fashioned, but with all the modern conveniences. We found it to be the perfect location to relax and enjoy the southern Maine coast.
What we liked best is its location. It was just a short walk to the ocean; so my daughters and I enjoyed rising early and watching a magnificent sunrise over the Atlantic from a rocky point that we shared with gulls and eider ducks. Later in the morning we walked 5 minutes in the other direction and enjoyed the beauty of Two Lights State Park. For lunch, we had lobster rolls and fried clams at the Lobster Shack while watching the surf crash against the rocks- all within easy walking distance! By car, we were minutes away from three other parks, two beaches, at least three more lighthouses, and all the points of interest in the Portland area. The location could hardly be more ideal.
The Mushroom itself is a unique cottage, that retains the feel of the quieter, simpler time in which it was built. It is inviting, comfortable, and unpretentious. It had everything we wanted and expected in a vacation getaway, and the wi-fi made planning each day's activities a breeze. In the evenings we enjoyed a fire in the large stone fireplace, browsing through the collection of books, watching a movie, or putting a puzzle together. Most mornings were spent on the porch with a hot cup of coffee, enjoying the woods surrounding the cottage and listening to the sound of the waves.
Our hosts were friendly and accommodating, and we were very pleased with the entire experience. If you are looking for a rustic retreat with a lot of character that is close to the ocean and conveniently located to dozens of attractions, you can't beat the Mushroom.
