Home Away from Home

I have never been disappointed staying here.The owner Mike is on top of everything.You need something or forget something - he will get it for you quickly.The house has plenty of room to move around in and is kept immaculate.HUGE TV.

The backyard is perfect - fenced in for pets if you have - BBQ grill - a very big fiire pit with wood to burn - wont have to buy .General store down the road .

Its perfect for us .We've been here numerous times (1st review) and have NEVER been dissappointed.

Lake just up the road - great house , location and owner!

We will be back again sometime and that is why this is our Home Away from Home!

Just what we needed.

We spent 2 days at this very cute Highland Lake Cottage over the Thanksgiving holiday. It was clean, close to everything, and just what we needed to escape from our crowded family’s house for some peace and quite. I am sure we will be back soon.

Has Potential but needs Renovation + Better Cleaning Service

Since we know that many rely on accurate reviews to find a place that will suit their needs, we are posting our experience, not to be spiteful, but to inform others who may stay here what to expect. The price is very reasonable, and the Cottage has potential to be a great place, and there are some nice amenities like memory foam beds, nice TVs in all rooms, and a great Location, however it fell short for us in many ways.

It seems the owner is trying to run this rental as you would for long term tenants, providing little in supplies up front, and expecting much in cleaning and organizing on check out.

The result is an extensive list of items that must be purchased or brought along to survive more than a few days, examples:

Paper Towels (1 Roll Provided)

Toilet paper (1 Roll Provided)

Quarters for the Laundry (Each Load costs $4 in Quarters)

Hand soap (Soap Provided had Bleach added to it)

Body Towels (Only 4 Towels Provided for 4 People – 6 Nights)

Dish Towels (Only one Towel Provided)

Bottle opener (The one provided is very difficult to use)

Of course, we realize the owners can’t provide everything for your stay, but it’s just all these small things that kept adding up, and they are items you can’t just by a weeks’ worth of.

Unclean. When we arrived, the house was poorly cleaned especially the bathroom. Surfaces above eye level were covered with dirt and dust. Corners behind the doors and curtains were full of pet hair and dirt. (The owner sent Poly to come and do additional cleaning in the bathroom) The Rug in the living room is urine and dirt stained. (The owner acknowledged this and told us he would be replacing the rug) The Couch also has a strong smell and feels sticky in places.

The other issue we noticed right away was a strong Mold / Musty smell in the home. The owner does provided Ionizers to help with the air quality but two in our group were older and suffered from allergic reactions to the mold, waking up with headaches and congestion. All of us noticed increased congestion as we spent time in the home, but improved when we left.

All in all Mike was very responsive and tried to fix the issues that came up, but we just did not enjoy our stay here.

If you do plan to rent this house, be aware that the checkout instructions on the VRBO are not accurate, you will need to read carefully the “Rental Agreement” sent after payment is received. Failure to follow the instructions will result in most of your “Damage Deposit” being lost.

Resposta do proprietário: When Michael and his party arrived I asked them to let me know how everything was once they settled in. They replied and I quote "Everything looks great - with a thumbs up emoji" After 2 days I reached out to him again to ask how everything was and when he stated that the house was not cleaned to his satisfaction, I immediately sent my property manager over to re-clean and was thanked for doing so. Our cottage is pet friendly and heated via forced hot air oil heat – which may not bode well for people who are highly sensitive and have allergies. Highland Lakes Cottage is a home rental, not a hotel with an endless supply of toiletries and such. Had anyone in this group actually read the rental agreement prior to booking or emails they were sent throughout the process, they would have known exactly what is supplied and in what quantities. They also would have known there is a commercial washer and dryer which are coin operated and accept only quarters - $2 to wash and $2 to dry (we have a septic system and this small fee discourages guests from running an entire load of laundry for only one or two articles of clothing). Our check out procedure is quite standard actually - throw all your garbage and food in the trash can, put things back in their proper place if you moved them, turn off electronic devices, close and lock all doors and windows – pretty simple. I could go on and on about how inaccurate their review is but I will simply point out that they received 100 percent of their security deposit back, that there are not TVs in every room - only the Living Room and Master Bedroom, there are 3 can openers in the home, one electric and two hand operated - If some one can not figure out how to use a hand operated can opener there is not much I can do to help them, I had my property manager throw out all the rugs - just in case, and that I did everything in my power to accommodate them. I try to please everyone but in some instances it simply is not possible.

Good Value

Had a good time , Michael was very helpful and all worked out very well for our visit from the UK. Very pleasant area at this time of the year. Didn't see any bears this time, but maybe next time.

Only down side was that things in the Kitchen needed cleaning before we could use them, and couldn't contact Polly.

Loved the beautiful surroundings though we didn’t have time to take full advantage of all that it had to offer. Home was comfortable and Michael very attentive and helpful. Would definitely stay there again.

Better than expected, especially for the price

Michael Collins was an excellent host -courteous, genuinely concerned, and responsive to our needs. The cottage house was clean, comfortable, and cozy, commensurate with the age of the home. We enjoyed our stay tremendously (especially the fire-pit and electronic entertainment) and we will do it again when given the opportunity.
