A lovely, secluded spot in Big Sur. Overall a great stay, but a few specifics:
-Nice décor—clearly a lot of thought and care has gone in to it
-Plush towels, robes, & linens
-Eclectic selection of books, music, movies, and games
-Good location, quiet, ‘unplugged’ and private
-Soaking tub and great shower water pressure (ahhh)
-New washer and dryer
-Awesome toaster oven
-Awkward layout (as others have mentioned). Not so bad for one family, but wouldn’t work well for sharing with multiple families or grown children. Non-solid doors (slatted) and lots of hard floors also doesn’t give much sound privacy.
-Firewood provided inside was so damp it was almost impossible to light, then when we finally got it going it popped and smoked terribly the whole time.
-Some minor maintenance issues (burned out/missing lights, sticking drawers) and spots where things are showing their age
-Steep driveway, we did slide a bit on the first attempt but then got the hang of it
-Nowhere for trash/dog poop/diapers. We didn’t try calling the caretaker because it seemed so minor to bother someone on a weekend about.
Barbara's home was wonderful. The surrounding area, of course, is full of stunning and beautiful scenery, but her home is nearly as impressive. The Japanese touches throughout lend her home a unique character, but you still feel like you're in a place cozy and inviting, not a museum. If I'm ever fortunate enough to visit Big Sur again I would do my very best to try to once again stay in her home.
My husband and I spent a lovely 3-day getaway at the Japanese House. It was our 2nd visit to Big Sur but our first time renting a house. What a special place. It has the sort of charm that makes you immediately feel at home. Bright and warm during the day, silent and cozy at night. It has a "house in the woods" feel for an authentic Big Sur experience. The location is ideal for all the activities we did (hikes, horseback riding, beach, dinners). If it's your first time, make sure to do some research in advance so you know where you want to go (remember, no internet or cell phone service is part of the charm), but it's easy to get around. We didn't cook while we were there, but we did enjoy some of the coffee table books and a DVD. We had such a wonderful time and hope to return.
My group of 4, chose this special house as our meet in the middle destination for Thanksgiving. Japanese House is charm filled, well managed, and light flooded (even in November). The nicely appointed interior has style in spades and the ample windows invite in the beauty of the lush surroundings (and don't even get me started about it's deck and courtyard). Despite a chill in the air, the house remained cozy night and day thanks to a beautiful stone fireplace (albeit a bit smoky) and thermostatically controlled heat. To any gourmands that might be considering a stay, I would suggest bringing any specialized tools that you might require or just check in with Barbara to find out if what you need is already in the kitchen array.
All things considered, all four in my party would stay at Japanese House again in a heartbeat!!!
We stayed two nights at the Japanese House with two teenage boys. Very interesting and quiet place. Perfect to retreat from the city busy noise. About a mile walk to Pfieffer beach and also close to other hikes at Big Sur. We liked everything at this house and highly recommend it to anybody who is looking for a place to stay at Big Sur. The price is decent and close to other places around (even lodges).
Few things for continuous improvement - please move to electronic web-based payment (we had some issues with pay-checks - our side fault). Also, I am not sure if we've seen microwave at the house.
Anyway, do not hesitate if you need a quite and fully equipped place at Big Sur.
This is a beautiful house nestled in the tree tops. It is tastefully decorated and felt more like a home than a rental. The location is great and the price compared to local hotels is also terrific. But by far, the best part of the whole deal was the warm wonderful owner, Barbara who went way out of her way to accommodate us. She went way above and beyond to correct the smallest of problems. I will definitely stay here again!
