The yurt was okay. For the price it was pretty good. There was an unpleasant surprise for the kids-we had to save all used toilet paper in the trashcan in the bathroom. The shower area had black mold growing on it. Also, a microwave is mentioned in the paperwork but there is not one there. The yard is just lava rock. I liked the round shape so that everyone was together most of the time instead of being off in separate rooms. The internet was good. We put our wet towels on the clothes line to dry them which worked out well. We spent most of our time out exploring Hawaii everyday and just spent the nights at the Yurt and that worked okay. The neighborhood dogs bark a lot at night and there is a road with loud vehicles going by late at night right near the yurt too. So it was a mixed bag for us- but worth it just to be able to be in Hawaii.
Ok- so the term "yurt" can be off putting...but let me assure you- this is such a special spot! The yurt is located in Hawiaan Ocean View. This is a quirky, hippie little town close to South Point. It's essentially a very large chunk of lava that was once coined to be a fancy smancy neighborhood that kinda fell through. So the yurt is waaayyy up the mountain- about 4500 ft. Elevation. The view is stunning, the wind whips and keeps things cool, the Stars bling at night, and it is so very quiet up there. As for the yurt- it is a very nice sized well built structure. It has solar power, water catchment, and a hot water shower. The bed in the downstairs is a comfortable king size and the loft bed is an air mattress with a memory foam on top. We found the solar power easy to navigate. Just hit the main switch and voila...you have power. We conserved as much as possible during the day and at night mostly used the solar lanterns provided. The porch is huge and provides a nice stage for coffee drinking in the morning and star gazing at night. The people in the community are wonderful. We will definitely be back!!
Fantastic night star viewing
This lodging was one we should have considered more thoroughly. "In the sky" conjures up a very different feeling than stuck on the side of a lava flow in a huge deserted subdivision. Ocean View is the largest subdivision in the US, 11,000 lots and over 150 miles of gridded streets on a lava flow, a 50's land development scheme by an oil company that never succeeded. You do not feel like you are on a mountain, but on a huge black sloping crumble of lava with a very few plants poking through. The yurt itself needs some TLC, especially the bathroom which is very mildewed. There are a very few houses perched on the wide expanse, lots of dogs, some loose and wandering at night, a hazy smudge on the horizon makes the "Ocean View." Some people will really love this. I really did not. It was depressing, especially the open dump on the lava one lot away, the "colorful" encampments in some lots with chained dogs and No Trespassing signs. It feels post-apocalyptic. Cheap land though, apparently. The yurt's instructions are extremely lengthy and cheerful and include helpful tips like how taking your recycling to the recycling center 20 miles away can be like a fun party, but was so misleading about the solar storage system that we were afraid we couldn't even charge the cell phones so we kept the lights out. There were no back up candles or battery lanterns, just three small, dim solar lanterns that were more like party decorations, not much use to read or anything. The propane stove/fireplace did not work the first night which really left us in the dark and cold. The very obliging local caretaker got it going and brought candles the next day. But the fireplace created a propane odor in the yurt, unpleasant and unnerving. This place might strike your fancy but if you like plants and birds this place might leave you cold.
Our stay in the yurt was exactly as expected. We loved staying in a round 'home' for a few days. All amenities as provided in the website. Having a large fridge was a lifesaver. We prepared our meals easily, everything we needed in the kitchen was provided. We did have some concern about the low 'reading' on the solar gage, however this proved to be unfounded, as we had plenty of electricity. I would suggest bringing your own beach towels, cooler and beach chairs.
This is a charming getaway and makes for a nice change of pace.
We enjoyed our stay at the yurt. It had pros and cons like anything else, but we knew what to expect and we had a great time. Things to think about.
-The power was never an issue. We left it on most of the time because I needed it for my cpap. It was between 17-21 the entire time. Never higher, never lower.
-There isn't a whole lot to do on this portion of the island without a considerable drive, but the scenery makes the time go fast.
-The local towns had really good food and friendly people.
-The bathroom needs some TLC. There is a mold issue in there that could be easily cleared up.
-The king sized bed was very comfortable.
-We were there during a tropical storm, 6 inches of rain in one night, the yurt was rock solid.
I found the yurt to be really cozy. We had 6 people there and all slept fine and had plenty of room. We even had my 3 year old daughter with. The owner went above and beyond to take care of us and meet our needs. I would recommend this to anyone looking for a place to stay.
