This cottage offers the best of all possible for vacation. Very quiet and out in the country, directly on the river with easy access via canoe and rowboat, but within a 5 minute drive to Baddeck for groceries & restaurants. Great home base for traveling to all points on Cape Breton; we toured the national park one day and went to Louisburg another day. Since we had some rain we thoroughly enjoyed having a wood stove, and thanks to newly-installed satellite enjoyed both wifi and watching the Olympics. Laverne and Gordon are wonderful hosts, met us the day we arrived with a tractor to help with luggage and a fire going in the wood stove. Cottage is located at the bottom of a small hill so I would not recommend for anyone with mobility concerns.
Very well equipped cottage offering an amazing view on the river, with birds of many species, chipmunks varieties of aquatic life. We loved the silence, the untouched landscape, the somewhat rustic and cozy comfort.
Close to Baddeck, very good as a base to explore the immediate region and Cape Breton Island in general. Perfect WiFi connection. Nice screened room for quiet reading and meditation.
Laverne and Gordon offered a warm welcoming, some good tips and a smile. We would recommend without hesitation!!!
We thoroughly enjoyed this wonderful cottage by the river. It served as a home base for our travels to many Celtic Colour concerts all over Cape Breton. Everything about this cabin makes one feel welcome and comfortable. The view of the river and beyond is exceptional and canoeing on the river was very relaxing and enjoyable.
We were on the go so much that there wasn't a lot of opportunity to get to know the owners but during the little time we were together Laverne made us feel like long lost friends.
I would recommend this cabin to anyone looking for a peaceful stay surrounded by beautiful countryside.
This cute, spacious cottage made for a very relaxing "base" during a five-night stay on Cape Breton Is. Baddeck is just a ten-minute drive away and is well-placed for excursions throughout the island. The cottage itself is rustic but spacious and very adequately served our family of four, including a 6- and 1-year old. The cottage is located right on a small river and offers amazing views, and our 6-yr old, who I took canoeing for the first time in the canoe provided, had a blast. He also really enjoyed the large screened porch which almost gives the impression of being out in the woods. The only downside to this location - at least in the summer - is that the area can be a little "buggy", but I think that goes with the territory. Another minor downside is lack of WiFi down at the cottage if you're not looking to be completely disconnected. However, the kind owners of the cottage are very open to one accessing Internet in the large screened porch of their house which is just a five-minute walk away. And I want to use this opportunity to extend to them one last "Thank you!" for arranging baby-sitting one night so that my wife and I could spend a couple of hours on the town.
We traveled to Cape Breton Island for the Celtic Colours International Festival. We loved staying at Laverne & Gordon's lovely Riverside Cottage. It is a sweet, homey, comfortable cottage with a beautiful view out any of its many windows. We enjoyed watching the Harlequin ducks from the riverside room. We also spotted eagles during our stay. There was plenty of room for our party of four adults. It was so nice being close to Baddeck but also being out in the country where was very quiet and peaceful. Laverne and Gordon made us feel welcomed with a fire burning in the stove and a visit when we arrived. They wanted to make sure we were comfortable and that we had everything we needed. This part of God's creation is so beautiful. The fall colors were at their peak - breathtaking. Thank you Laverne and Gordon. We hope to return someday.
The booking process was easy and the communication with Laverne was friendly and we had looked forward to staying in the riverside cottage and to meeting her and Gordon. We were not disappointed on both counts. The cottage is spacious, clean and well equipped. It is appropriately furnished for a place in the country, with lots of exposed wood and plenty of windows to look out onto the beautiful surroundings. The view from the main bed has to be seen to be believed, with a marvellous vista across the river towards the hills and no other dwellings in sight. You get a feeling of peace and tranquillity but you don’t feel totally isolated as there are neighbours not too far away and Laverne and Gordon have a B&B just a short distance away. This is the sort of place where people don’t lock their doors and is reminiscent of a simpler by-gone time where you can slow down, relax and appreciate the bounty of Nature. There are beavers in the river and bald eagles flying around and sitting in the trees. Canoeing down the river was a joy, as was sitting by the campfire afterwards and having a cold beer and listening to… well, nothing really – it’s a very rare thing these days to have silence. After dark, the stars were amazing too – no light pollution here.
You’ll not be watching the TV and you might not have a phone signal or a Wi-Fi connection but none of that matters as you will have plenty to do just enjoying being there and watching the wildlife. If you can’t get them in the cottage, you can pick up Wi-Fi and phone signal in Baddeck, which is just a few minutes’ drive away, if you need to occasionally reconnect with the modern world. We managed to get a signal on the radio with a couple of local stations and then sat by the woodstove and read under the lamplights.
And if all of this doesn’t convince you, then there’s Laverne and Gordon, two of the nicest, friendliest people you will ever meet – very warm and welcoming and on hand if you need anything. The cottage makes the perfect base to explore this beautiful area and don’t miss the Cabot Trail, especially in Autumn when it’s truly breathtaking.
