What a perfect spot for my husband and I to get away from the crazy everyday life and take the time together to relax and take in the beauty of the Upper Peninsula! Bob and Beth, your place is amazing and we can not thank you enough for giving us the opportunity to share your cozy cottage. Even though it was a short get away we will able to spend time on Mackinac Island which was a perfect fall day! We plan to hopefully come back again!
Many thanks to our hosts Bob and Beth for a great week in the Les Cheneaux Islands. We found everything at the cottage just as advertised and more. The cottage is very "northwoods" and is first class in style. We loved the antique windows and doors. It was furnished with a combination of antique and new northwoods log furniture, vintage dinnerware, luxurious bedding and beautiful flowers all making our stay very special.
The cottage is nestled into the bank surrounded by cedars and the view across the water is of a natural area making this property quiet and serene. Although there are neighboring cottages one enjoys a feeling of privacy. There are many steps down the hill to reach the cottage adding to its feeling of seclusion. We visited in September so the summer crowds were gone. We enjoyed a quiet week watching the wooden boats being brought into the local boat works for winter storage. It was a restful time on the water as well as in the cottage. The boat trips we took offered views of many of the architecturally interesting boat houses and their corresponding cottages - some being large lake houses.
Bob and Beth were informed hosts sharing their knowledge of the area and we appreciated their guidance during our stay. We look forward to a return trip to Cedar Rock Cottage soon!
This area of the UP is truely a hidden gem! Our four days at the cottage was exactly what we all wanted. The cottage is perfectly nestled into the bank right on the water's edge-appointed with amazing decks and pots of gorgeous flowers. The master bedroom is worth the trip in itself-and the pictures are accurate, the only thing you don't get in the description on VRBO is the soft lapping of waves through the bank of windows and the gentle nite sounds! It was cool one evening and we had an amazing evening in with a stunning fire in the stone fireplace, cards and a nice view of the wooden boats as they passed through the channel.
This is not a tourist oriented area-made for those of us who crave a respite from the visual trappings of urban areas-here we saw a pair of eagles-amazing skies and a unique chain of peninsula's and islands. The boat houses tucked into the shoreline are an incredible study in architecture and style....the cottage came with kayaks and a canoe fro it's own wonderful boathouse next door.
We found the appointment of the house exactly as needed-kitchen items aplenty and a wonderful laundry facility.
Firewood was provided and a gas grill...(if you are charcoaler's plan to bring our own). The upstairs, although unused by us, was absolutely charming and a would be areally special place for children to feel comfortable. I loved the deep clawfoot tub too!
Bed and Breakfast hosts are all special people to open their home to strangers-but Beth and Bob were especially friendly and accomodating! We were even treated to a evening boat ride to see the area from the water! So, in retrospect, from the perspective of being back down state, we were incredibly relaxed here and it was exacty what we desired in a short summer get-a-away to experience own state. It is near enough to St. Sault Marie and the Superior shoreline to make seeing sites in that direction easily reached.
We could not have picked a more perfect location for vacation !! It was absolutely everything that is seen in the pictures and more. The Christian's were wonderful and kind, leaving beautiful flowers and other nice things for our arrival. The cottage was well appointed, clean and absolutely perfect for our family. Literally right on the water we left our screened in windows open the entire time so that we could hear the gentle waves, frogs and sand cranes. The sunrises are spectatular.
We explored the area and found all the towns lovely.
Cedarville has a gas station had a great bait and tackle for those of you wanting to fish. We also found wonderful books at the small little bookstore in town - Safe Harbor Books. You can also get ice cream by the back window. Katydids is a cute shop that has gifts, kitchen items, chocolates and many great clothing items. The hardware store has everything you might need as well.
Hessel, which might be my favorite town was literally 3 min down the road. We had a simple lunch at the Hessel Grocery and also ate supper at Les Cheneaux Culinary School. It was pricey, but great quality and a special treat for our family. The Pickle Point also had all sorts of great gifts, toys and plenty of yarn for knitting. I think they also do classes throughout the year. We also did 2 tours with Woods and Water Eco Tours and they were wonderful for inexperienced individuals like us. Their tour gave my children the courage to go our and about on the Kayak's supplied by the cabin. I would suggest to go early in your stay if possible.
We spent a day on Mackinac Island and we loved it. Rent a bike or take your own and at least ride around the island. It's 8.2 miles, but we did it with our children in slightly over an hour. Breathtaking ! I suggest the carriage tour first to get your bearings on the island, and then you can go from there. We also paid the $10/person to go into the Grand Hotel. Something you should do at least once.
Saut St. Marie- you should take a tour through the locks. We were shorter on time and the weather was bad so we only took the short 2 hour tour, but wished we would have had time for the 4 hour lighthouse tour. The Valley Camp ship museum was something to see as well. We were only there for 2 hours before it closed, but 3 hours would probably be best.
If your coming in later- grab groceries before you leave St. Ignace. I didn't see anything open later in the evening.
The owner Bob was so nice and met us at the cottage. He gave us a tour and showed us where everything was. It is just like the pictures. We had a great time and wish we could have stayed longer. We had 3 generations with us. They all enjoyed there time at the cottage.
We have rented this cottage for three years in a row and have fallen in love with the charm of the cottage and the beauty of the area! If you want a place to just relax, sit and watch the boats go by, explore the waters with your boat or sit on the deck to listen to the sounds of nature, this is the place! Bob and Beth are great to work with and will treat you like you are family!
