My spouse and our two college-aged daughters stayed here on Easter 2009 weekend, and despite the dismal weather, we had a delightful weekend. The cottage is cozy, tastefully decorated, peaceful, and very convenient (easy walking distance) to nearby amenities, including a great restaurant, an excellent spa and a friendly and well equipped miniature tavern. The setting and grounds are gorgeous, the rear veranda a delight. The Tannery is a perfect location for a couple's romantic getaway, or quiet weekend with friends --- we will definitely be visiting the Tannery again.
Highly Recommended !
My mother, sister, and I stayed as a getaway to connect and relax. Two of us chose to sleep on the sleeping porch. It was heaven. The stream rushing outside put us to sleep and soothed our souls all night and all day. Pure bliss. The stars were bright and amazing. We had a fire inside to keep us cozy. The home is quaint and lovely. We would stay again. Beautiful place, beautiful town.
We decided at the last minute to enjoy a weekend getaway and luckily, we were able to book The Tannery. It's a beautiful old structure that has been restored and fashioned into a comfortable and relaxing cottage. It's on a very quiet, forest lined road, with cold water spring directly across from the house. As soon as you step out of the car, you can hear the brook in the back of the property and the spring in the front. We brought our two youngest children, ages 10 and 15. I wasn't sure how they would respond to an old house in the country since they are used to living just outside the city, but they had a wonderful time. They spent hours in the warm spring water behind the house, soaking, playing and watching the minnows. Their evenings were spent out on the sleeping porch. The wifi worked very well, so when they wanted, they were able to connect with their friends online. They joked about the house being "prehistoric" but it had everything we needed and more. The kitchen was tiny, but it was well stocked with dishes, pots, pans and utensils and we had no trouble cooking and baking. The beds were all cozy and comfortable and the linens were all nice. Our favorite hours were spent on the porches. It's so quiet there - just the sounds of the cicadas, birds and the springs. We sipped coffee and hot tea in the mornings, read books, ate our meals and napped in the afternoons. In the evenings we enjoyed cider, played games and visited. It's a great place to reconnect with your children, slow down, enjoy nature and to just relax. We'll definitely return. It's the kind of place you end up feeling a little homesick for!
We just returned from a glorious weekend at the Tannery. The owner was so gracious over the phone and the property is all it is cracked up to be. It doesn't get much better than sitting on this porch and listening to the bubbling of the stream. If you are looking to get away from it all (but there is a terrific small pub and restaurant within walking distance), this is the place to be.
This lovely, restored historic building is nestled along a quiet, wooded country road with creek cascading along the back. The home includes spacious bedrooms, one and one-half small baths, small kitchen, and living areas well-appointed with country antiques and memorabilia. The house was comfortably warm, blankets and linens were above-average.
On the fringe of town, the Bath County courthouse is but a short quarter-mile walk away. The creek out back is delightfully warm and deep enough for a good soak. There are ample opportunities for hiking in the immediate area.
The only negative worth mentioning: the height of the steps of the stairs leading to the second-floor bedrooms would be a challenge to anyone with a walking impairment.
As the county seat, Bath affords an opportunity to enjoy the quiet charm of an old Southern town. There is not a single traffic light in the entire county (seriously), and the denizens of this community are determined to keep it that way. The award-winning Waterwheel Restaurant, located in an old grist mill roughly one hundred yards down the street, provides gourmet meals at standard prices--no savings there, but well-worth the price. Wine selection in their underground vault, where patrons can elect to choose their own high-quality wine, was surprisingly extensive.
Charmingly rustic. Water pressure negligible but hot water abundant. Nice beds. Nice towels. Heating system works well. Kitchen is BASIC. You will have to wash dishes, which the previous occupant had not done very well. A few mice appeared, as did ants in the kitchen. In nice weather, which I did not have, the back porches would be fabulous. Did not try laundry but did find full-sized refrigerator in basement--only tiny one upstairs. Would recommend for adults only who do not plan to do much cooking.
