Enchanting!

  • 5 de 5

It is hard to express how beautiful the mesa is -- sunrises and sunsets are outstanding. The house is an architectural gem and is very well appointed. My wife, father-in-law (from The Netherlands) and I thoroughly enjoyed our stay. It is truly an enchanting place!

Resposta do proprietário: After we finished building our house in 2000 we thought eventually we would get tired of going there and tired of the desert view---but each visit brings us a new marvel: a huge full moon rising over the Black Mesa, a double rainbow (our last visit) after a monsoon rain, a golden sunset that illuminated the raindrops like diamonds on the grass ---our mesa just keeps on giving us yet another wonder. On the last visit we ate in a garden with our architect (who so carefully fenestrated our views) and he said even after living there more than 40 years he still thought New Mexico was very special. The beauty of the high desert with its huge sky filled with stars, the fragrant smell of sage, the absolute silence of our mesa home brings us such peace and such pleasure. Enchanting indeed!

Profound Beauty

  • 5 de 5

This house had a profound effect on me and my small dog when we first visited last October. The slow rhythm of the high desert captivated us and somehow made us both feel not only at peace, but directly part of the nature around us. In the mornings, my normally neurotic terrier would calmly stroll out into the landscape to nap in the sunlight. And in July, when I returned for another week with my husband and dog, the same gentle calmness overtook us all immediately. Perfectly placed in the land, the house is completely surrounded by dramatic beauty and stunning variety wherever one gazes. In the fall, almost all the desert colors remain but the cottonwood trees begin to glow in brilliant yellows along the edges of the Chama River to the south. On both visits, I sat seemingly forever looking out as the light changed on the dry grass, the bees worked in their mysterious patterns on the lavender beneath the giant picture windows, the jackrabbits dashed across the distance, and the clouds and sky shifted constantly on the mesas and mountains - almost as if some lighting director was playing backstage and experimenting with every possible color and light pattern he could imagine. All this beauty was on display while our day-to-day needs were met seamlessly. The beds are comfortable; the rooms are graciously sized and tastefully furnished; the baths are modern and luxurious, everything was spotlessly clean, and the kitchen fun to cook in. Being there, one feels total isolation and privacy, yet it is reassuring that there are friendly and helpful neighbors very close but out of view. A four-wheel drive vehicle is not mandatory but I found it makes the gravel road easier. Looking forward now to experiencing winter and spring on future visits.

Resposta do proprietário: Yes we are in love with our beautiful landscapes and the care that our architect took to expose them with his clever fenestration. We love sitting on the east portal and watching the moon rise over the sangre des cristo mountains. We have taken care that the sauna and all the resting places in our home reflects and captures the peace and beauty of the high desert. Our guest knew from his last visit that October is spectacular in its golden beauty, now he saw summer with the monsoons and rainbows, but yet to see december in the snow and of course the spring when the earth wakens for yet another season of growth and desert blooms.

Abiquiu on the Mesa -

  • 5 de 5

Abiquiu on the Mesa was recommended by nyc friends who had been there last year with a fabulous family re-union and raved about it.

So our family of wife and 9 year old son headed 'southwest' and it was just the breathe of fresh air we needed.

We went to bed with the moon in a beautiful sky and woke up with airy sunlight streaming through the windows from all directions as the house sits out on this majestic Mesa in the middle of God's Country.

We cook a lot and the Kitchen had everything we could think of or needed and

it was Breakfast on the outdoor dining table as my our son was delighted to be chasing Geckos & watching ants build sand castles. It only got better from there as we went white/water rafting and found a local vineyard and wine from neighbors of the Host Couple. It is simultaneously off the beaten path but only a stone's throw from Georgia O'Keefe and much much more. We had a tremendous experience and have all ready booked time for next year with some Family.

GO ENJOY !

Resposta do proprietário: We do love Georgia O'Keefe 's artistic expressions of our beautiful land. She is well honored by a museum in Santa Fe (the only one in America dedicated to a woman) and her incredible home and studio in Abiquiu is visited by thousands every year. To know her paintings and come to this land and to compare them to the real is a treat for all. And there is so much more to explore besides the Plaza Blanca, the Pedanale, and Ghost Ranch. And so much to do in these spectacular landscapes: hiking fishing horse back riding white water rafting galleries museums shopping and of course eating. Taos and Santa Fe, Georgia O'keefe and Agnes Martin: chile cheeseburgers and steak!

a beautiful place

  • 4 de 5

We spent a wonderful month long vacation on the Mesa and enjoyed every minute of it. The house was tastefully appointed, comfortable and welcoming. Many places to curl and read, enjoy the view, or have a cosy dinner party. The outdoor space was perfect, we grilled just about every night. Loved taking advantage of the Sauna and it's private portico.

The pantry was very well appointed with spices, paper products, pots, pans etc. Nothing was missing.

The bedrooms and beds were very comfortable. Everything was clean and well-maintained.

Lilyan answered all our questions and was very helpful at all times.

The location was great for exploring near and far. From a hike down the wash to the river, to a drive to Taos or Sante Fe all was well with in reach. Especially enjoyed the Rio Arriba rodeo, our tour of O'Keefe's house, Ghost Ranch, and hiking up in the cool mountains above Los Alamos. We made several trips to Ojo Caliente for yoga and spa.

It was one of the first month long vacations where we just stayed in one place and relaxed, and this was the perfect place.

Resposta do proprietário: We have had a few guests that stayed as long as a month but never such nice ones! It was a year ago and and I never knew that they were dissatisfied with their stay until now! they have said they loved it and we made a good negotiated price for their stay and the best part is that there is no tax charged for stays of one month or longer. I myself have never had the time to spend a month on the mesa so I kind of envy their long days of couch reading and hiking on the beautiful state land (which is hundreds of acres teaming with bunnies and other wildlife) and exploring our neighborhoods: Abiquiu with Georgia O"Keefe's house, the church, the sweet little library and best of all Bodes and their chili cheeseburgers. El Rito: now having several galleries, and of course El Farolito---Dominick still cooking but no longer painting his wonderful paintings of the town.(which we have hanging on the mantle) Santa Fe, Taos and many new discoveries in the small towns and villages. Even Espanola has its share of sights and sounds and food and farmers markets. So much to see and do---all I have tried to cover in the many brochures in the cabinet and in our house book. It takes years to see it all---or you can just lay quietly on the couches and read about it. :) I have written to them to find out why they are the only ones who have given us a four star review after 5 years of renting and they explained that nothing is worth 5 stars! well I don't agree with them and the minor problems they had with the house (window frames and hot water) have been resolved with screwing in the frames (instead of pins) and turning up the hot water thermostat. I only wish they had told me their problems while they were there--and we would have solved them immediately. We try our very best to make sure all our guests are comfortable and love our home as much as we do!!!!!

Nice Art

  • 5 de 5

I really liked the art in your house... the purple chair painting in the bedroom is so "giorgio morandi"... and the naïve pieces are so wonderful... like the corner building at the turnoff... I like that the art throughout the house slowly grows on you, nothing ostentatious to say "hey look at me", just a gradual realization that you can look at these paintings for a long time and still feel an appreciation and affinity. This in my travels experiences is a rare find. I usually want to cover, remove, or avoid looking at images in most places I visit. Thanks, nice house!

Resposta do proprietário: I am glad this last guest appreciated the art that we love and put into our home. There are paintings photos and pastels from our artist friends and other work from the local artists. There is the beautiful photo of Abiquiu mountains and clouds from Joan who has a gallery on the High Road, the bird lady on the fireplace which is from our gardener (also a sculptress) made from local cottonwood, the painting on the kiva in the living room which was created by Dominick who runs his family's restaurant in El Rito (El Farolito) . Besides the local art we have beautiful hand crafted furniture from David who is actually a guitar maker. And that is just some of the magic that has made our mesa home such a retreat and such a lovely experience for all of us.

Rest and moonsoon adventures

  • 5 de 5

We stayed for three days in the house this summer and it is a wonderful resting and contemplation place. As it is built for the local climate, with sensible orientation, using appropriate shading and thermal mass, we particularly appreciated that air conditioning was not required, whilst the house kept cool. Our stay was made a bit more eventful by massive summer monsoon thunderstorms which kicked the arroyos in action. However lovely neighbours helped solve this unexpected issue. A true taste of northern New Mexico.

Resposta do proprietário: It was a wild summer…hail stones for 20 minutes in july! and then of course rainbows all over the skies almost daily. The mesa even turned green this summer which is a rare treat for all the desert people. We certainly welcomed the rain to help the drought ridden forests and hope that this winter brings us lots of snow. The house is wonderful in the winter with the piñon fires going in the kiva and the sometime snow blanketing the tender grass. Though my favorite season is the fall when the cottonwoods on the Chama go golden. Our poured pumice 14 inch walls do help to keep the warmth inside in the winter or to hold the coolness of the night in the summer. We have tried our best to be kind to our mesa---keeping to the trails, using little water, recycling, etc etc. and we certainly love to hear that our guests feel that way too. It is a wondrous place and ,yes, with very friendly and helpful neighbors.
