We had the opportunity and pleasure to spend 4 nights in this property while attending our daughter's wedding. The property is very unique from the location literally right on the Hudson River to the decor including thought provoking art. The bedrooms are large and the beds and pillows very comfortable. We spent most of our free time on the deck overlooking the river appreciating the view and enjoying the peace and quiet. It has a large flat panel TV but honestly we never got around to turning it on. The kitchen is fully furnished including little touches like real maple syrup for pancakes/oatmeal, spices and ice cream in the freezer (we replenished the supply when we left).
Previous reviews have commented on the neighborhood. Our experience is that the neighbors are very quiet and respectful and the people we interacted with were friendly and helpful. The location is close to shopping and restaurants and the hiking/biking trail at the end of the road is an added bonus.
We will have occasion to travel back to Haverstraw periodically and without reservation we will look to stay at this very special property.
The river view from the house was truly breath taking. There is a large deck on the back of the house and a stairway to the private beach which features a cabana with electricity and stove. You know right away by all the special touches in the house that it is owned by a talented artist. We were very comfortable there and we hope to return in the future.
While the neighborhood seems a bit rundown- the house is a wonderland of views besides a great kitchen and countless amenities. The house is immaculate and well designed for maximum relaxation and enjoyment.
Joan, Staying in your home was a wonderful experience. The view was spectacular and everything about it was splendid. Enjoyed the hot tub and the bicycling trails right down the street. Anyone looking to get away and relax this is the place to go. You and your husband were wonderful hosts and your pick for dinner (Union) was spot on. Can not thank you enough for our stay. This is a complicated house to evaluate. as I will explain.
We had a wonderful time here. The deck is spacious and the view from the deck is breathtaking. We spent many hours on the deck reading. We also loved the proximity to the Hudson River greenway trail, The trail (hiking and biking) begins just about 100 yards from the house, and we went for long, lovely walks every morning. The house itself felt comfortable and spacious for its size. Moreover, the owner was lovely and responsive when we had a small problem with a smoke detector and sent someone over right away to take care of it.
In addition, we enjoyed the restaurants in the area. The more upscale Union restaurant in Haverstraw and 8 North Broadway in nearby Nyack were superb, and a number of less expensive restaurants in both towns were quite adequate. There was one Ecuadorian restaurant in Haverstraw that was very disappointing. But that was definitely the exception, and the rest of our restaurant experiences were good.
We also enjoyed some of the cultural options in the vicinity. The Edward Hopper house and museum is close by, in Nyack. The Dia contemporary art museum in Beacon and the Storm King sculpture park are both really serious and large art venues, each about a drive of about 45 minutes to an hour through very nice landscape.
So why is the review "complicated?" Mainly because of the neighborhood. The immediate blocks contain houses right next to each other, cramped parking of cars, some houses with several cars that seemed to be being continually "worked on," and generally not a feeling of a street it is pleasant to walk on. And if you continue down the street about half a mile, you come to an industrial site along the river characterized by huge piles of dirt, perhaps half a block long and twenty feet high, as well as concrete bunker like structures also part of whatever industrial activity is going on. None of this, of course, is the fault of the owner of the house, but it meant that once we finished our morning walk along the lovely greenway path, we were pretty much "stuck" in the house, in the sense that, when we got restless in the afternoon, we really couldn't go out for a pleasant walk in the neighborhood. We would have to drive to some other site. If this doesn't matter to you, I'd recommend the house highly for what I said in the first half of this review
We thoroughly enjoyed our stay the week of August 1st. The house was clean and comfortable, and the views were fantastic. There was always something to look at on the river: the ferries, the barges, or sailboat races. We used the grill and kitchen to cook each night, eating out on the deck to enjoy the view. The house is not a far drive to Harriman State Park where we did some fishing and hiking, and we used the bikes on the hiking/biking trail at the end of the block. We took the canoe out on the river and searched the beaches for 'sea glass'. For people who enjoy outdoor activities, it is the perfect place. The hot tub was nice to relax the sore muscles after our days of hiking too! The owners are helpful and we would definitely recommend this place to anyone.
