We have been vacationing in Maine for almost ten years. Each year traveling further and further up the coast. While all of Maine has remarkable coastal beauty, we have found Port Clyde to offer the quintessential Maine experience. A place of rustic beauty, authentic cuisine and great people. The Harbor House was the perfect place to discover Maine and create family memories that will stay with our children and us for a lifetime. Driving down Birch Lane a quick turn leads you to a vista that may have inspired Andrew Wyeth. A true deep-water dock extends out on to the water inviting you to not just see the view, but also take in Maine beauty in a breath of cold coastal ocean air. The homeowners are kind, amiable and very responsive. When we arrived, the groundskeeper Nate had just went fishing. He offered us several fresh mackerel to use a fresh bait for fishing and catching crabs. At low tide the dock offers children a first-hand view of the wonders on the ocean floor. At high tide a simple cast into the water and a hope of a fish offered a fisherman’s delight. The home is well equipped. Everything from flashlights to kayaks is there for use. Upstairs the rooms are spacious and well laid out. The swing in the children’s room was a hit. The kitchen is well stocked; pretty much everything you need is there for a seafood meal including a lobster pot, of course. Head to the Lobster Co-Op in Port Clyde where Gary offers great prices and fresh "off the boat" lobster. At night, looking up at the sky, shooting stars cast over the Milky Way entertaining our eyes for hours. We love Maine. It has come to represent what we want our children to understand what a vacation should be, the company of family amidst unsurpassed beauty. Lucky for us, we had The Harbor House to offer us amazing accommodations for our traditional journey to Maine. Thank you again….
My wife and I stayed at Harbor house for 2 weeks in Fall of 2014 and enjoyed it so much that we came back in Spring (April 2016) for another 2 weeks. Although it was a cold Spring we had a fantastic time once again and loved everything this wonderful house had to offer. As it was early Spring it appeared that we were the only ones around the area and it was so wonderfully quiet and romantic! We had deer come on the property just about every day. There were lots of Spring birds and one day we even saw a fairly rare Northern Flicker. The hardwood trees were still bare and without buds when we arrived. The house continued to be outfitted with all the necessities for cooking and sleeping with lots of blankets to stay warm and cozy. The house was clean and obviously well kept. We had frost just about every night but the house was warm. We also had a fire in the fireplace every night to take the chill off and that, supplemented with the excellent heating system, kept us warm, although we did shut the heat off during the night. We were fortunate to have a full moon while we were there it made for some great pictures, along with the beautiful sunrises.
During our visit we were very fortunate to meet the man who actually built this fantastic post and beam house and who was also one of the owners. His name was Stephen and he was building a bunkhouse “A” frame building next to the main house. He was most interesting and was someone who could do just about anything! He also brought us a much bigger TV screen so there was no further need to squint! We also talked several times with one of the other owners – Joanne - who was very pleasant and helpful.
My son and his wife visited us on a couple occasions and on one visit brought a “mess” of raw oysters on the half shell which were “wickedly” delicious and made a great accompaniment to our chilled white wine.
We got to do some touring and visited the Maine Prison store in Thomaston and purchased several chopping boards and bird houses. We also visited the Transportation Museum in Owls Head. Port Clyde was very quiet and the village store was working on “winter hours” and closed at noon. No restaurants were open with the exception of the Blue Dolphin Grill.
We highly recommend Harbor House as a beautiful and private place to stay and enjoy just about everything that Maine has to offer. We certainly will return when we get the chance to do so.
The property is ABSOLUTELY stunning! My husband and I had such a great time relaxing and exploring the area. I was in the beginning of my second tri-mester and still not feeling that great, but the house had a very calming effect.
I only wish we had made use of the kayaks or gone swimming, but it was a little late in the season for that! I can't wait to rent again in a few years when my baby is a bit older.
Joanne was on top of everything
We have rented in Midcoast Maine for many years, and this property is the best yet. Lots of room, everything you need, big yard that rolls down to the water and a spectacular view. This is a real home, filled with wonderful family histories. The location is quiet and private. Port Clyde grows on you - a small town with an interesting night life! The house was tidy and easy for us, and the owners helpful by phone and email. We love to cook, and the kitchen was excellent. We felt at home, and look forward to returning. A place to remember.
We just made our first visit to Harbor House, and it won't be the last! It's a lovely location, private and quiet, and the views from the deck and the dock are so beautiful and peaceful... but it's just a short distance from some great Maine seacoast towns (we explored Camden one day, and enjoyed dinner in Port Clyde another evening) and plenty of outdoor activities. The hosts leave really helpful information, not just about the house itself but also about things to do and see in the area (from sailboat rentals to take-out menus). The house was clean and stocked with thoughtful details -- kitchen and cooking gear for a lobster dinner, extra sunscreen and towels, board games, everything you need for a Maine getaway. The design of the house is so cool and unique -- feels authentically old New England, but with the perks, amenities and space of a new, well-built home. And we so appreciated being able to bring our beloved dog for his first Maine vacation -- he loved it too! Thanks for a wonderful visit.
We've been to Harbor House many times in the last few years - but this was the best yet! It's such a special home, and we've fallen in love with the community, the activities, and the atmosphere. The cleanliness and readiness of Harbor House surpassed expectation. THANK YOU for being such a cool rental (napkins, hairdryers, laundry detergent, extra bins of clean towels and sheets, etc...no dust, pollen, etc on the indoor/outdoor furniture...everything is HERE!). Coming from Utah - on a plane - that is SO appreciated! The home is clean, fresh, and - quite frankly - perfect. Pulling into the drive and seeing the boathouse, the home and the ocean ahead....it's simply magical. The home itself is so cozy and warm - we've invited an array of friends and family to join us in past years and each person says..."This is SUCH a special place."! That's exactly what we feel. I have vacationed in Maine for all of my life, and THIS IS IT. Harbor House is cozy, classic, and TRUE Maine. The artwork, the sense of history, and the connectedness to the natural world all prevail in creating a cozy, clean, perfect Maine vacation. The home is classic post and beam, amazing natural light and windows, with lovely window fans (as needed), and plenty of sunshine from the eastern facing front yard and dock. WOW. We went through a LOT of sunscreen! We kayaked one day, swam at the private pebble beach (just around the corner) another, and today we had an epic day of sailing. To me - the worst part of being a "grown-up" was not being able to go to camp....But then there are vacations like this! THANK YOU HARBOR HOUSE!
