First, the good:
The apartment is, especially compared to most Italian rentals, huge. After being in much smaller accommodations for the first legs our trip, the additional space was a treat. The apartment is also within an hour of Perugia and most other sights in Umbria, which makes sightseeing easy. The per night rate is good.
The apartment is very well appointed and itself quite pretty. The kitchen is like Disneyland for people who like to cook. The views from the balconies are lovely.
The communication with the landlord (an American) is excellent, the tips for where to visit very helpful.
And a few potential downsides to consider:
Narni is, for better and worse, not tourist town. There's little to see there compared to other towns in the area, and it's a touch grimy compared to other towns. That said, the lack of tourists means the town is nice and quiet. Few folks in stores speak English. There's more of a feeling that you're in a "real" Italian town.
The beds are very soft, which could be a problem for some.
The apartment does not have air conditioning, which could be a problem in a hot season. And the wifi is inconsistent, requiring frequent rebooting.
All told though, we very much enjoyed our stay.
We spent a very pleasant week mid-May 2013 at this very comfortable apartment. The rooms are actually far more spacious than they appear in the photos. The views from the terraces were amazing and it was so pleasant sitting outside in the late afternoons with the lovely sweet perfume of star jasmine carried up on the breeze from the garden below. There was everything we possibly could have needed in the kitchen and more, except for a kettle!
The apartment is very centrally located and just minutes walk to a number of restaurants and grocery stores. We had no trouble in finding a free car parking space in the car park below the town and travelling up to the top via the funicular and lift saved our legs from a climb.
Narni itself is well located for sightseeing in various directions. Civita di Bagnoregio, Villa Lante near Viterbo, Orvieto, Perugia, Spello, Montefalco, Bevagna and the Sabine Hills are places we visited and all are easy day trips.
We wouldn't hesitate recommending this apartment to anyone considering a stay in Umbria.
It's at times like this that I wish I weren't so darned honest. I would like to keep this gem of an apartment and the delightful town in which it is located my personal secret. Alas, I cannot be so mean spirited. It would be a very unkind way to repay the generosity of the owner of this Narni hideaway.
My husband and I spent three weeks in Narni and felt that we had stumbled onto a treasure. The apartment is fabulous. It is every bit as spacious, airy, comfortable and well-equipped as previous reviews describe. The kitchen is what I call a cook's kitchen; and I am a cook. One of the main reasons we rent apartments when we travel is to allow us to purchase wonderful food at local markets and prepare it at our home away from home. Often the experience is dampened somewhat by having to make do with inadequate pots, pans and, particularly, knives. Not here!! We cooked many meals in the apartment using the wonderful equipment available and it was a delight. We then ate the meals on the dining terrace, either watching the sun come up over the hills to the east or watching the lights of all the villages in the valley and hills twinkle on as darkness fell. It was enchanting.
The town of Narni was a complete surprise to us, also. Although we have spent time in Umbria, we had never made it to Narni and that turns out to have been a grave oversight. The apartment is well located in the center of the town and the town is small but full of charm. Unlike some hill towns that seem almost Disneyesque, Narni is filled with local vitality. From the small Saturday market where one can purchase delicious local meats, cheeses, wines, fruits and vegetables (to say nothing of the ubiquitous Italian granny apron), to the local fresh pasta shop where the ladies are so welcoming and helpful, to the various alimentary shops, pastry shops (try the brioche with crema and nutella at the shop in the Piazza Garibaldi) and cafès, the town hums with activity.
Although one could spend a week just exploring the nooks and crannies of Narni, don't! Narni is a great location to explore many interesting areas of Umbria and Lazio, the list of possibilities goes on and on.
The owner was wonderful and very helpful. We had a few minor hiccups and he got us immediately back on track.
The main thing is to go to experience this for yourselves but be sure to leave a little time for our return trip, per favore.
We found the appartment very well-appointed, spacious and comfortable. Meals were enjoyed on the terrace, with its exceptional views over the town and surrounding countryside.
Narni is such a good centre for visiting neighbouring hill towns such as Orvieto and Viterbo, Rome itself (best travelled to by train), the wonderful Tivoli Gardens and also the beautiful wild flower meadows in the mountains to the north east, near Norcia.
Our week passed all too quickly and we have nothing but praise for this extremely special accommodation with its helpful owner.
Three retired professionals
My wife and I and our friend stayed in this lovely apartment and enjoyed every moment of our stay. The first thing we did when we arrived was marvel at the views from the two terraces. The beauty of the hillsides, mountains, lake and towns cannot be captured in picture. You are treated to 180 degrees of Italian splendor. The apartment itself is clean and comfortable. We loved how well set up it was and you will find every comfort of home.
The town of Narni is a quaint hillside town with several restaurants and a few shops. Don't expect to find anyone that speaks any English of note so be prepared to practice your local language skills. We came in with only our guidebooks and language books and we did fine so don't be scared just prepared. The pizza place around the corner and the trattoria at the bottom of the street around the corner are excellent places to find a great meal. There are other food options but we didn't visit them. The fortress above the town and the lake below it are several attractions to explore.
Narni is very reachable by train and then bus. You can get bus tickets at the coffee bar next to the train station. It is also a 30 minute walk from the apt to the train station if you don't mind walking down the hill. We did it about six times in our stay and it was quite pleasant each morning. With Rome only an hour away, Florence in a few hours, and plenty of other hill side towns nearby, Narni is a great place to make a base for your Italy stay. We checked out both Orvieto and Spoleto during our stay and loved how easy it was to get from place to place.
In summary we definitely recommend using Narni and this apartment for your next Italy trip.
In spite of viewing pictures and reviews in advance of our stay, we were still unprepared for the beauty of Narni and the Umbrian countryside. The apartment was all that was promised and more. There was nothing missing from these accommodations and our host/owner was gracious and easy to work with.
There isn't a lot to do in Narni but exploring and enjoying the history was exciting in itself. The central location allowed us to enjoy all of central Italy - not just Umbria and Tuscany but we also made a day trip to The Marches and enjoyed the Adriatic Coast. We fell in love with the small towns in their rural settings but also were able to spend time in Florence, Rome and Assissi - soaking up the art, architecture, culture and rich history. We suggest Narni guests take the train to Florence and Rome as taking a car into those cities is more of a liability than a convenience!
If there were any negatives, it would simply be the fact that one cannot park a vehicle at the apartment itself. However, we soon got used to the routine of parking in the lot and making our way home the rest of the way via tram lift and elevator to the center of Narni and the easy walk "home" from there.
We do highly recommend this vacation rental and hope to return ourselves some day!
