My review on Facebook was deleted. Not at all as advertised! Gateway Community meant a 6 unit condominium with a gate in a very bad neighborhood. There was black goo on the headboard. Ceiling fan was broken. Smelled of mildew so badly that in the 1st night both mine and my husband's eyes were bloodshot and we were really congested. Did I say BAD neighborhood? Drinking water was a joke. After 1 night we left and went to an all-inclusive in Cancun. Notified the management immediately of problems- resolved nothing! They kept our money for the entire week. I wish I could post pictures! We will never again do vrbo out of country due to this condo!
We took the shared shuttle shuttle service from Cancun airport using SuperShuttle, which took us to the Puerto Juarez ferry terminal. After purchasing our tickets for the 30 minute ferry ride we called our contact Sabina, and arranged to meet her at the Lool-Beh condominiums. We had a great ferry ride across the turquoise waters to Isla Mujeres. After we docked, we took one of the numerous taxis to the condo, and Sabina was waiting to greet us and to show us our unit. It was exactly as pictured, and spotlessly clean and well equipped. We enjoyed our stay in the authentic Mexican neighbourhood, and there was a well-stocked tienda (store) only a two minute walk away. Within walking distance there was a local market with fresh produce, a Super Express grocery store, and a Chedraui supermarket. While we were on the island we had a great time touring by golf cart (about $45 for a day). We visited a small Mayan ruin, snorkelled, and swam in crystal clear waters, and visited many restaurants and bars all of which were good. Next time we are in Isla Mujeres we would like to swim with the whale sharks. Most evenings we had our happy hour on the rooftop terrace at Lool-Beh. While relaxing in one of the lounge chairs we watched the sun set over the skyline of Cancun. The view from the rooftop truly is a 360 degree panorama of the island and surrounding waters, day or night! We enjoyed walking on the malecons at North Beach and around Salina Grande (which is near the end of our street). Salina Grande is a salt water lake surrounded by a malecon with benches along the way. It is great to watch the pelicans and frigate birds diving here for their food. We found it was not necessary to rent a car here, as your can go anywhere by taxi for about 30-40 pesos. One day we caught the local bus which runs every hour and is even less expensive. Some of our favourite restaurants were: Oscar's, Ballyhoo, Jax, The Soggy Peso, and the Fisherman's Coop. When we return there are lots more to try. The condo also had a washer/dryer combo for our use, and next time we won't have to pack quite as much with this in mind. Needless to say, we will be back to Lool-Beh and for a longer visit!
We had a pretty good communication with Pablo before we arrived. He missed our second payment, but besides that it felt trustworthy.
We decided to meet outside the apartment at 11:30 the day for check in. At 12:00 no one had showed up, so we called the numbers found on the HomeAway page. The first number was not in use and the other reached Sabina. She was out of town and sounded unaware of our arrival, but made sure someone came within fifteen minutes. We tried to ask them why we had to wait so long, but didn't manage to get our question through the language barrier (neither of us are very skilled in Spanish). We were instead shown into the apartment, and it was totally unprepared! Crumbles in the sofa, laundry in the laundry machine and someone's wallet in the safe. It also lacked clean towels and toilet paper and such. I do hoped the bed clothing was clean but I am not sure of it.
They said the apartment that we were supposed to stay in (no 4, one floor up) had a problem so we should stay in this one (no 2, ground floor) for 2 nights. The problem turned out to be another tenant, and after two days there was no sound about our change of the apartment. Perhaps because the "problem" still remained. One day before our decided check out a woman was knocking on the door and asked why we were still in the apartment. She thought we were supposed to check out one day too early. Dios mios! During the check in we were given an email address and a phone number to the guy who would arrange cleaning when we wanted it. The phone number did not work and he did not check his email for four or five days...
The apartment in itself is good with a nice TV with a good selection of channels and a powerful AC and a quiet fan. There is good mosquito netting for the windows, and a rubber thing cover the bottom of the outer door to prevent bugs getting in. The ground floor apartment has windows in the bedroom looking directly into a wall which makes it feeling a bit cramped and like a basement, but besides that it is a good apartment. Though with our welcoming it felt filthy throughout our stay.
Great place for a great price. Neighbors are long term renters or live in the condos. You can walk to the supermarket or just cross the street to a little local store for bread and eggs. Glass shower in the bedroom is romantic, but not for family consumption, Walk a block to the main street and flag a taxi to the Hildago St activities to enjoy fine dining or fun beers with friends. We would absolutely stay here again!
We enjoyed our week's stay in Isla Mujeres at Lool Beh. The island is absolutely gorgeous, and we enjoyed truly authentic Mexican food.
The condo is mid-island (south of the airport), so you'll either need to rent a golf cart or scooter OR rely on taxis. You can negotiate taxi rides for 20 pesos to/from downtown with most cab drivers. We found that taxi drivers will try to charge you 40/45 pesos when you first arrive off the ferry, but start walking south and then you'll be able to get a ride for 20 or 25 with your luggage.
There is a supermarket in walking distance: Super Xpress. Turn left onto Calle Camaron. Once you get to the water, take the nicely paved walkway til you reach the Sports Complex. Walk around the Sports Complex and you'll see the supermarket to your left.
Beautiful view from the rooftop. By American standards, the surrounding area initially looks run-down upon arrival; however, we felt safe during our week stay. The condo is well-maintained and very nicely decorated inside. There is a safe in the room with a key provided. Hangers for your clothes would be a nice addition. There is limited dinnerware in case you plan to make many of your own meals. There is a nice combination washer/dryer so you don't have to bring as many outfits. A huge jug of purified water is provided with your rental; however, there is no dispenser, so you may want to bring several of your own water bottles so you can chill your water and always have some available.
Pablo and Sabina are incredibly responsive while you're onsite with any requests or questions. We would stay here again.
This property was the perfect choice for our first time on Isla Mujeres. Location was great with shops and an outdoor market nearby as well as the fisherman's co-op located across the main street where you can buy inexpensive, fresh seafood most days after 3pm. Take them up to the roof to cook on a charcoal grill. Property is well maintained and Sabina will do practically anything to make your stay the best it can be. Rent a golf cart for a couple days to get the lay of the land, then we downgraded to a moped but taxi's are plentiful and cost only $3 to get to centro. Sun up and sun down on the roof top patio are spectacular and its also perfect for sunbathing with a steady breeze to keep you cooled off. But if that's not enough, the plunge pool is super refreshing! The neighborhood is very safe and quaint in an old-Mexico type of setting. I'd definitely stay at Lool-Beh during our next visit; it's quiet and not as claustrophobic as centro. Be sure to hit the closest, nicest beach club - Zama - on the Sac Bajo Peninsula. Isla Mujeres is absolutely the best place to relax and shut down. I'll definitely be back!
